Behavioral learning theory has been generally overlooked in the development of marketing thought. The central concept states that behavior that is positively reinforced is more likely to recur than nonreinforced behavior. This runs parallel to the marketing concept and may be a sufficient model for dealing with most low involvement purchase situations. Its greatest value may be in the development of promotional strategies. This paper extends some of the ideas presented in an earlier paper in this journal.

Operant conditioning as presented by Skinner and in a behavior modification perspective is clarified and extended by comparison with behavioral learning theory, which is found to be a misinterpretation of operant conditioning and which offers recommendations for marketing practice that are unsupported by operant principles or the BMP. Consideration of these issues leads to several extensions of operant conditioning and the BMP in marketing.

Rolls uses evolutionary theory and behavioral learning theory in his analysis of emotion. We believe that both theories are greatly underutilized, leaving an incomplete description of the nature of emotion and its neural foundation.

Hotel service providers are among the most affected by the evolving Covid-19 pandemic. Although the consequences of the pandemic on hotel operations have been widely examined, the question of how hotel businesses can revive, innovate, and transform in order to survive and recover remains vastly under-researched. This study aims to provide insights on this important topic by analyzing 312 news articles between December 1, 2019, and March 1, 2021, published by global news media, which report hotels’ strategies and tactics to deal with the pandemic. Grounded on chaos theory, behavioral learning theory, and an integrated crisis management model, a global pandemic crisis management framework is developed. Practically, the paper reveals best practices applied by hoteliers to deal with the pandemic (e.g., service transformation, smart marketing, strategic collaboration/alliance, mergers and acquisitions, and digitalization) and suggests ways for hotel services providers to adapt to the “new travel” age.
