John Paul II’s care for seminaries falls within the implementation of the broadly understood teaching framework of the Second Vatican Council. In his numerous addresses and documents on the subject of becoming a priest the Pope reinterpreted the Council documents in a way which was attuned to modern times. He did this, since he wanted seminarians, who are educated to fulfill and continue the mission of Christ himself, to be properly prepared to take on the legacy and teachings of the Council in the third millennium of Christendom. John Paul II describes seminaries as educational collectivity “on the way” constituting a certain continuation of Christ’s disciples’ collectivity, whose experience determines the seminary’s identity and its normative ideal.

The subject of the article is the formation of the concept of a hermit or an anchorite in thelight of the codification of the Latin Church law after Vatican II. In canon 603 CIC/83, the legislator uses two terms of a hermit and anchorite, which when used interchangeably have a rich semantics as presented by the author, going back to Christian antiquity. CIC/17 did not normalize the canonical status of eremitic life in the Latin Church. It was not until the period of codification after Vatican II that a canonical norm governing eremitic life was formed. As a result of codification work, eremitic life was recognized by canon 603 CIC/83 as one of the forms of individual consecrated life. In modern times, both in the Byzantine and Latin traditions, eremitic life is flourishing attracting both men and women.

This article discusses John Paul II’s speech at Victory Square in Warsaw on 2 June 1979, during the Pope’s first pilgrimage to Poland. The subject of the research is the question of whether the Pope, when presenting his homily, used his experience and skills gained in Mieczysław Kotlarczyk’s Rhapsody Theatre and whether he was a rhapsodian himself. The first part of the article describes the Rhapsody Theatre’s ideological assumptions, while the second presents the way the homily by Pope John Paul II was delivered, and, finally, the third part shows which parts of the papal speech coincided with Kotlarczyk’s artistic programme. Finding these similarities allows us to say that John Paul II was indeed a rhapsodian, i.e. a minister of the word.

AbstractThis article is the third in a series of studies on The History of the Rechabites. The first, "The Story of Zosimus or The History of the Rechabites?,"1 established the independent identity of this text within the Christian monastic work, The Story of Zosimus, and was a sort of prolegomena to the study of this text. The second, "Towards a Critical-Introduction to The History of the Rechabites,"2 sought to address the standard introductory issues, such as date, original language, provenance and purpose. The present paper seeks to examine the text verse-by-verse, and to offer a commentary on it. Or, rather, an initial commentary. No commentary of any sort has ever been offered on the Greek text of HistRech before, and it would be foolhardy to claim that any one scholar could perceive all the allusions and meanings in a particular text at a first attempt. This commentary, then, is offered in the same spirit as my two previous studies on HistRech: as a step along the way towards unravelling the meaning of this pseudepigraphon about the Rechabites, not as the last word on the subject.

The 4th Synod of the Warsaw Archdioceses was debating during the five-year period, between 19th March 1998 and 19th March 2003 when the Warsaw Church had been run by the primate of Poland, cardinal Joseph Glemp. He proposed, summoned and carried out the synod and promulgated its resolutions. The initiative of summoning the synod was connected with the need for overall renewal of the religious and moral life of the Warsaw archdiocese. The synod’s deliberations and its resolutions were to cause the betterment of the organization and functioning of administrative and pastoral apparatus in the archdiocese, to normalize the many issues concerning the church and religious life, as well as to improve the laity and clergy’s religious, social and moral level. To achieve, a wide representation of clergy, catholic laity and monks were engaged. The synodical resolutions with its jurisdictional and pastoral nature are signified by strong setting in the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, the Canon Law, the documents of the Holy See and John Paul II, as well as by the resolutions of the Second Polish Plenary Second and the instructions of the Conference of the Polish Episcopate. At the same time they refer to the tradition of the Warsaw archdiocese and remain fully opened for the “tomorrow” of the Church, evangelizing and pastoral objective. Furthermore they undertake, organize and regulate many difficult pastoral issues. Thus the synodical legislator contributed to the renewal, revival and activation of the church and administrative structures of the archdioceses, so they could serve to various pastoral, church and administrative assignments.

The names of stations in the Way of the Cross may be used as titles of pictures and sculptures, each corresponding to a particular event in the Passion of Christ, or as titles of meditations. The article focuses on the second meaning, but the trends of the development of both kinds of names are similar. The study is based on material consisting of about 200 texts of the service that have been published from the beginning of the 20 th century to the present (2020). The purpose of the article is to describe the changes that have taken place in the 20 th century, a period of particularly turbulent changes in religious discourse. The article deals with the function, syntactic structure and features of style, such as the use of archaic or colloquial vocabulary. These properties are considered in connection with social and cultural changes. At the beginning of the analyzed period, it was customary to use relatively long titles, which informed the participant or reader about a particular event using expressive and evaluative lexis. Those titles gradually gave way to short, schematic names. Since the Second Vatican Council, titles of a new type have appeared. Their purpose is to attract the attention of the recipient. They are based on a riddle, a contrast, allusions, etc. Therefore, the recipient derives satisfaction from deciphering the puzzle or finding the source of the quote or allusion. These phenomena are known from research on the language of press or fiction, but they can also be linked to current trends in the so-called new evangelization.

Adequate study of Catholicism in Ukraine is impossible without taking into account its progress in the world, especially in the last century. The experience of comprehending the reality of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and rethinking its entire historical path led to qualitative transformations of this denomination. After the Second Vatican Council, and especially with the pontificate of Pope John Paul II on Catholicism, we can speak of a significant phenomenon of modern spiritual life.

The encychcal Fides et ratio proclaimed by John Paul II on 14 September 1998 is a continuation of doctrinal statements by the Magisterium of the Church on a matter that has been an object of its concern from its very beginnings. This is the problem posed by the relationship between philosophy and faith. The solutions put forward by Vatican Council I (1869-1870) in connection with this problem provoked a response in Catholic philosophical and theological circles. One of the most important events in this field in Polish terms was the publication of Father Marian Ignacy Morawski's S J considerable work Filozofia i jej zadanie (1876). This work is the subject of discussion in the article below.

In what follows, I examine the renaissance of the idea of freedom as a fundamental measure of humanity in the work of Karol Voitila (Pope John Paul II). I examine as well Karol Voitila's concept of the human person as found in his work "Love and Responsibility" as well as the encyclical Evangelium vitae, which affirms the incomparable value of the human person. I also consider the celestial predestination of the human person as discussed in the documents of the Second Vatican Council.
