Community awareness and skills education in waste management by applying the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle (3R) is important in solving waste problems. Especially with the existence of a waste bank as social capital in community-based waste management. The activity of a waste bank is a concept of collecting dry waste and sorting it and having management like a bank, but the savings are not in the form of money but garbage. The results of this community service showed that the implementation of community empowerment through the waste bank in Tampingan has activities that include socialization of the waste bank, waste storage, waste selection, skills training and evaluation. Community empowerment through waste banks on environmental aspects has had a positive impact, particularly in relation to environmental cleanliness. As for the economic aspect, it can provide additional income for active members, and on the social aspect, it can further strengthen social relations.

Abstract This paper aims to describe women’s role with active participation in waste management within their communities. The environmental awareness education of citizens combined with the application of the ‘4Rs’ principle (reduce, reuse, recycle, and replant) is necessary to develop waste banks to resolve the issue of waste. Waste bank management is predicted to be the best solution for the municipal waste management and increases the public’s awareness of recycling household waste as a waste management strategy. An increase in awareness begins at the community level. Women can be as social capital in community with the capacity to move the community through their active role in waste management activities. This study considered citizens in Karang Resik, Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia and used the emancipatory participation methods of counselling, educating, and training. The results showed that the presence of a waste bank educated residents to be disciplined in managing their waste and provided extra income from waste collection. Moreover, it strengthened the social cohesion for women within the community. This study shows that local female administrators in family welfare empowerment programmes can be used as role models for other women and can provide a significant impact on waste management.

Cawas Village has launched a Garbage Bank in every RW in its area, one of which is RW 09 Kuncen, which has succeeded in establishing the Manunggal Sejahtera Waste Bank. The focus of this program is the development of a waste bank to become the Parent Garbage Bank, both in management and in technical implementation. The objective of this activity is the compilation of the Cawas Village Kuncen Waste Bank Master Development Plan which is in line with the Cawas Village RPJMDes regarding waste management, both inorganic and organic. The Direct Action method is applied in community service programs by increasing management capabilities through socialization activities, training, practice, study visits, and Waste Bank Master planning documents preparation. The presence of the Covid-19 pandemic diverted some community empowerment activities to community efforts in overcoming Covid-19. Community empowerment is done online. The results achieved have not been optimal due to the Covid-19 pandemic, so that several strategic activities related to the initiation of the main waste bank development have been hampered. Some of the results were achieved, the agreement to build a waste bank was continued after the pandemic, a demonstration area for the reuse of waste as a planting place, preparation and implementation of an environmental competition for waste management, and activities to prevent the spread of Covid-19 (environmental sanitation and checking body temperature at the entrance to villages and mosques). The response of partner satisfaction to program implementation is above 80%, and 100% hope that it will continue

Garbage is the leftover product from every human daily activity that is thrown away which, if not managed properly, can cause environmental and health problems. Waste bank is a form community participation in waste management. Air Putih Sub-dsitrict already has a waste bank that is actively operating. However its activities are still limited to collect inorganic waste from customers and sell it to collectors. In order to  increase the value of inorganic waste collected in the waste bank, a training to decorate used items using decoupage technique was conducted. Waste bank managers and Empowerment Family Welfare (PKK) members were participated in this training. In addition, a training how to use social media as a marketing media were performed. The results showed that the target community's skills had been achieved in processing inorganic waste into decorative items with higher economic value. Meanwhile, the sustainability of production and the economic impact resulting from these trainings still require further evaluation.

The existence of socio-economic benefits generated from waste savings makes the role of waste banks not only limited to waste management and recycling. But the waste bank is also able to increase participation, skills and changes in the attitude of the poor in waste management, especially women who are always involved in the household scale waste management process. On the basis of this, it is important to see the influence of the waste bank on the empowerment of poor women in Sicanang Belawan, Medan. This study uses several theoretical descriptions and related concepts; Garbage Bank and Community Empowerment Program. This research design uses associative research methods with a quantitative approach. This approach is deliberately chosen because to be able to find out the influence and also the relationship between the waste bank program variables and the empowerment of poor women. In this study, the sampling technique uses Harry King's Nomogram, where the total customers of 10 waste banks are 200 customers. Of the 200 customers taken samples with a 5% error rate. The volume of waste in the city of Bandung increases along with the population growth. The TPA is no longer able to accommodate any more, as a result the garbage overflows and is scattered in the wind. This condition creates an unpleasant sight and an unpleasant smell, very disturbing the community. Waste management in RW 06, Sukamenak village is not yet organized, because there is no socialization of waste management coupled with less public awareness. Bandung State Polytechnic (Polban), moved to provide education to the community through community service activities (PKM). The role of the PKM team in the waste utilization and management efforts includes; (1) increasing community knowledge in waste management and utilization starting from the smallest unit, namely the family with the 3R program (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle); (2) training and assistance in effective management of inorganic waste and organic waste; (3) building community independence in waste management through the establishment of a waste bank "Kebon Kalapa Berseri". Inorganic waste management becomes daily necessities or can be sold to increase income. Organic waste is made into fertilizer as a planting medium for reforestation. The waste bank can reduce the volume of waste in the TPA and the savings can be taken for additional family economy. AbstractAntigua and Barbuda is currently experiencing an expansion in integrated waste management driven by local community groups. These events are catalytic and transformational, fit well into SEPLS methodologies, and contribute to many of the biodiversity targets and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With waste being a direct driver of and major challenge for biodiversity, climate change and land degradation, many positive multi-dimensional impacts are being seen, realised and manifested that contribute positively to reducing land-based sources of pollution through community stewardship. Such local actions positively impact the sustainable management of natural resources and the protection of habitats. Likewise, they support land degradation neutrality, protection and safeguarding of the ecosystems that provide our soil, air and water resources, sustain livelihoods, and facilitate transfer of knowledge to children and youth. This attempt to pilot a circular economy approach is providing vocational and life skills training, as well as income generation for the local community, including new forms of capacity building and development, while reducing soil, water and air pollution. Public-private partnerships built through this project are motivating other groups to follow a similar path to biodiversity transformation. Changes in attitudes and behaviours, and the building of knowledge and capacities in the next generation, is taking place through school and community outreach programmes. The project has led to community empowerment in understanding that everyone has a role to play in sustainable development and that through collective actions, changes to improve public health can be made.
