Construction Contract Quality Warranties: Hybrid Quality Assessment Model

The term "quality" is defined as the conformance to predetermined requirements or specifications. These requirements may be simple or complex. They may be set in terms of the end result required or as a detailed description of how work should be executed. Recently, there has been increasing interest in quality assurance in the construction industry. Most current techniques used in infrastructure assessment and quality inspection rely merely on subjective criteria. Such inaccurate or subjective assessment techniques have been identified as critical obstacles to effective infrastructure management. An overview of contract quality warranties for steel bridge coatings is presented as a practical example, and a hybrid assessment model that can be used to quantitatively measure quality attributes is proposed. The hybrid model combines image processing and neural networks for defect (specifically, rust) recognition and measurement and uses statistical analysis for quality acceptance or rejection on the basis of the contract warranty clauses. The hybrid model incorporates human experience through the training stage to benefit from experts’ knowledge and to correct for other external factors.

The article presents the studies of the influence of self-realization on her attitude to different sides of reality (to her husband, to her child, ideal self, real self to her work, to the education, to her mother, etc.). The study involved 110 mothers. In this study, we have used combination of three methods: essay, questioning, method of color metaphors. The results were processed by sign test, cluster and content analyses. Based on these results we made a conclusion that mothers during maternity leave understand the phenomena of selfrealization differently. Consequently, they differently define the essence of self-realization and define different types of self-realization. Content analysis showed that women who value self-realization are focused primarily on the internal condition and being in harmony and not on external factors. Unrealized women are influenced by external factors: lack of work or conflicts with her husband.

Blue ocean strategy includes a consistent pattern of strategic thinking in the creation of new markets in various industries. This chapter examines how to create a blue ocean and its role in improving the construction industry. This is library research alongwith case study. It has been prepared based on information gathered from articles published in international journals and referring to large and reputable builder companies. In the concept of strategy, “Blue Ocean” is referred to two overall scope of blue and red ocean. In this chapter, we used the Kano method for evaluation and selection of the features in the construction industry and then, through a four-step approach, it was decided what features should be removed, innovated, enhanced or improved. Finally, using improved hybrid model of Kano and the pillars of the blue ocean strategy, we concluded that economic factors and psychological factors that impact on the consumers need investment and more attention.

When making policy, procedural, or technological changes to a complex system that has safety implications, a key question decision makers must answer is: What are the risks to the users of the system that will result from making these changes to the system? This chapter illustrates a method to explore different facets of this question using mathematical modeling and probabilistic risk assessment techniques, with the objective of assessing the safety impact of changes to the National Airspace System that follow from the Federal Aviation Administration's next generation air traffic modernization program. The authors describe the development of an Integrated Safety Assessment Model as a structured approach to evaluating current and emerging risks in National Airspace System operations. This process addresses the previously stated risk question by combining fault tree and event sequence diagram modeling techniques, hazard identification and analysis methods, opinions from subject matter experts, and concepts from business intelligence.

The paper, on the basis of the statistical data from 1980 to 2009 in Anhui province, uses linear regression method, Johansen test, Granger causality test and impulse response function to analyze the internal and external factors affecting the development of construction in Anhui. The results show as follows: the development of Anhui construction industry is characterized with the extensive economic growth pattern; the long-term equilibrium relationship is identified between the added value of the construction industry and its external factors; GDP and the added value of the real estate industry are the Granger causality of the economic development in construction; Real estate industry has made more contributions to driving the development of construction industry than that of GDP. In addition, this thesis gives some suggestions on the development of Anhui construction industry.

Construction project schedule delay is a worldwide concern and especially severe in the Ethiopian construction industry. This study developed a Construction Schedule Risk Assessment Model (CSRAM) and a management strategy for foreign general contractors (FGCs). 94 construction projects with schedule delay were collected and a questionnaire survey of 75 domain experts was conducted to systematically select 22 risk factors. In CSRAM, the artificial neural network (ANN) inference model was developed to predict the project schedule delay. Integrating it with the Garson algorithm (GA), the relative weights of risk factors with rankings were calculated and identified. For comparison, the Relative Importance Index (RII) method was also applied to rank the risk factors. Management strategies were developed to improve the three highest-ranked factors identified using the GA (change order, corruption/bribery, and delay in payment), and the RII (poor resource management, corruption/bribery, and delay in material delivery). Moreover, the improvement results were used as inputs for the trained ANN to conduct a sensitivity analysis. The findings of this study indicate that improvements in the factors that considerably affect the construction schedule can significantly reduce construction schedule delays. This study acts as an important reference for FGCs who plan to enter or work in the Ethiopian construction industry.
