Prediction of Asphalt Mix Fatigue Life with Viscoelastic Material Properties

A simplified fatigue model is presented that can predict the fatigue life of asphalt mixes using viscoelastic properties only. This fatigue model was originally developed with the elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle and continuum damage mechanics and was reduced to a simple version that can predict fatigue life with viscoelastic properties only. On the basis of the experimental study conducted on 12 different types of asphalt mixes, it was observed that the fatigue behavior of asphalt mixes is affected by both the viscoelastic properties and the fatigue characteristics, but mostly by the viscoelastic properties. In addition, it was found that the coefficient of conventional strain-based fatigue models could be expressed in terms of viscoelastic material properties. In the verification study, the fatigue model was able to predict the fatigue life of various types of mixes at the same level of prediction accuracy without change in model coefficients. The fatigue model was also able to accurately predict the changes in the fatigue life of an asphalt mix due to the changes in the volumetric mix properties.

Normal oral food ingestion processes such as mastication would not have been possible without the teeth. The human teeth are subjected to many cyclic loadings per day. This, in turn, exerts forces on the teeth just like an engineering material undergoing the same cyclic loading. Over a period, there will be the creation of microcracks on the teeth that might not be visible ab initio. The constant formation of these microcracks weakens the teeth structure and foundation that result in its fracture. Therefore, the need to predict the fatigue life for human teeth is essential. In this paper, a continuum damage mechanics (CDM) based model is employed to evaluate the fatigue life of the human teeth. The material characteristic of the teeth is captured within the framework of the elastoplastic model. By applying the damage evolution equivalence, a mathematical formula is developed that describes the fatigue life in terms of the stress amplitude. Existing experimental data served as a guide as to the completeness of the proposed model. Results as a function of age and tubule orientation are presented. The outcomes produced by the current study have substantial agreement with the experimental results when plotted on the same axes. There is a notable difference in the number of cycles to failure as the tubule orientation increases. It is also revealed that the developed model could forecast for any tubule orientation and be adopted for both young and old teeth.

The main objective of this work was to study the influence of the wear properties of two commercial alloys (CK45 and Al7175) on their fretting fatigue behavior. It is verified the effect of material local degradation by wear on a fatigue strength reduction factor, namely the stress concentration factor, and on the overall fretting fatigue life of these materials. The fretting fatigue phenomenon is a synergetic effect between wear and fatigue. It is dependent on both the fatigue and the wear properties of the materials. Material properties promoting an increase in wear resistance should enhance fretting fatigue life.

When skin is stretched, stimuli experienced by a cutaneous mechanoreceptor neuron are transmitted to the nerve ending through the skin. In these experiments, we tested the hypothesis that the viscoelastic response of the skin influences the dynamic response of cutaneous rapidly adapting (RA) neurons. Cutaneous RA afferent neurons were recorded in 3 species of mice (Tsk, Pallid, and C57BL6) whose skin has different viscoelastic properties. Isolated samples of skin and nerve were stimulated mechanically with a dynamic stretch stimulus, which followed a pseudo Gaussian waveform with a bandwidth of 0–60 Hz. The mechanical response of the skin was measured as were responses of single RA cutaneous mechanoreceptor neurons. For each neuron, the strength of association between spike responses and the dynamic and static components of stimuli were determined with multiple logistic regression analysis. The viscoelastic material properties of each skin sample were determined indirectly, by creating a nonlinear (Wiener–Volterra) model of the stress–strain relationship, and using the model to predict the complex compliance (i.e., the viscoelastic material properties). The dynamic sensitivity of RA mechanoreceptor neurons in mouse hairy skin was weakly related to the viscoelastic properties of the skin. Loss modulus and phase angle were lower (indicating a decreased viscous component of response) in Tsk and Pallid than in C57BL6 mice. However, RA mechanoreceptor neurons in Tsk and Pallid skin did not differ from those in C57 skin with regard to their sensitivity to the rate of change of stress or to the rate of change of incremental strain energy. They did have a decreased sensitivity to the rate of change of tensile strain. Thus the skin samples with lower dynamic mechanical response contained neurons with a somewhat lower sensitivity to dynamic stimuli.

A multi-axial continuum damage mechanics (CDM) model was proposed to calculate the multi-axial creep–fatigue damage of a high temperature component. A specific outer cylinder of a 1000 MW supercritical steam turbine was used in this study, and the interaction of the creep and fatigue behavior of the outer cylinder was numerically investigated under a startup–running–shutdown process. To this end, the multi-axial stress–strain behavior of the outer cylinder was numerically studied using Abaqus. The in-site measured temperatures were provided to validate the heat transfer coefficients, which were used to calculate the temperature field of the outer cylinder. The multi-axial mechanics behavior of the outer cylinder was investigated in detail, with regard to the temperature, Mises stress, hydrostatic stress, multi-axial toughness factor, multi-axial creep strain, and damage. The results demonstrated that multi-axial mechanics behavior reduced the total damage.

Much research has been done on Surface Mount Technology (SMT) using the Finite Element Method (FEM). Little of this, however, has employed fracture mechanics and/or continuum damage mechanics. In this study, we propose two finite element approaches incorporating fracture mechanics and continuum damage mechanics to predict time-dependent and temperature-dependent fatigue life of solder joints. For fracture mechanics, the J-integral fatigue formula, da/dN = C(δJ)m, is used to quantify fatigue crack growth and the fatigue life of J-leaded solder joints. For continuum damage mechanics, the anisotropic creep-fatigue damage formula with partially reversible damage effects is used to find the initial crack, crack growth path, and fatigue life of solder joints. The concept of partially reversible damage is especially novel and, based on laboratory tests we have conducted, appears to be necessary for solder joints undergoing cyclic loading. Both of these methods are adequate to predict the fatigue life of solder joints. The advantage of the fracture mechanics approach is that little computer time is required. The disadvantage is that assumptions must be made on the initial crack position and the crack growth path. The advantage of continuum damage mechanics is that the initial crack and its growth path are automatically evaluated, with the temporary disadvantage of requiring a lot of computer time.

Metallic materials are extensively used in engineering structures and fatigue failure is one of the most common failure modes of metal structures. Fatigue phenomena occur when a material is subjected to fluctuating stresses and strains, which lead to failure due to damage accumulation. Different methods, including the Palmgren-Miner linear damage rule- (LDR-) based, multiaxial and variable amplitude loading, stochastic-based, energy-based, and continuum damage mechanics methods, forecast fatigue life. This paper reviews fatigue life prediction techniques for metallic materials. An ideal fatigue life prediction model should include the main features of those already established methods, and its implementation in simulation systems could help engineers and scientists in different applications. In conclusion, LDR-based, multiaxial and variable amplitude loading, stochastic-based, continuum damage mechanics, and energy-based methods are easy, realistic, microstructure dependent, well timed, and damage connected, respectively, for the ideal prediction model.
