The dynamic behavior and ride quality of railway vehicles are influenced by track quality. Monitoring riding comfort and safety is a major task of the Austrian Federal Railway’s Infrastructure Division. The track testing and recording car EM 250 provides a proven measuring instrument for modern track maintenance. Equipped with an inertial measuring system and an optical track gauge measuring system, the track testing and recording car can measure the track alignment and rail profiles at speeds of up to 220 km/h. The measurements, taken every 25 cm, provide binary data files that can be processed offline. Track quality parameters are measured as functions of vehicle acceleration and are stored in a database from which they can be easily retrieved from any computer in the company. The Bureau for Applied Mechanics and Mathematics was commissioned by the Austrian Federal Railways to develop the SIMULAT program for analyzing rolling stock dynamics. In developing the model, special consideration was given to the exact mathematical description of all elements affecting vehicle dynamics. Using an optical measuring system, the track testing and recording car determines the rail cross section on the basis of readings at individual points. The simulation program links the curve with the track data, allowing the analysis of the impact of worn profiles on running stability. For the simulation, the line layout and the track geometry deviations excite the model of track and vehicle. In a followup phase, the vector of generalized degrees of freedom is evaluated, and the results are displayed with a visualization program. The simulation results were compared with data recorded during a test run and showed satisfactory correspondence.

Abstract Regular monitoring of railway systems is imperative for improving safety and ride quality. To this end, data collection is carried out regularly in the rail industry to document performance and maintenance. The use of machine learning methods in the past recent years has provided opportunities for improved data processing and defect detection and monitoring. Such methods rely on installing instrumentation wayside or collecting data from onboard rolling stock. Using the former approach, only specific locations can be monitored, which could hinder covering a large territory. The latter, however, enables monitoring large sections of track, hence proving far more spatial efficiency. In this paper, we have investigated the feasibility of rail defect detection using deep learning from onboard data. The source of data is acceleration and track geometry collected from onboard railcars. Such an approach allows collecting a large set of data on a regular basis. A long short-term memory (LSTM) architecture is proposed to examine the measured time-series to flag potential track defects. The proposed architecture investigates the characteristics of time-series signatures during a short time (∼ls) and classifies the associated track segment to normal/defect states. Furthermore, a novel automated labeling method is proposed to parse the exception report data (recorded by the maintenance team) and label defects for associated time-series signatures during the training phase. In a pilot study, field data from a revenue service Class I railroad has been used to evaluate the proposed deep learning method. The results show that it is possible to efficiently analyze the data (collected onboard a railcar operated in revenue service) for automated defect detection, with relatively higher accuracy for FRA type I defects.

The state of the art in ride quality assessment is reviewed. A portable environmental measuring system (PEMS II) has been developed to simultaneously record variation in motion (in all six degrees of freedom), temperature and pressure for various segments of a ride. The results of extensive studies of passenger reactions to diverse vehicles are presented as a set of models relating human comfort ratings to environmental conditions, vehicles studied include aircraft (commuter planes, S-61 helicopter, Boeing 747, Concorde), trains (conventional and special purpose), buses, and cars. Limited data are available on marine vehicles. Models for aircraft involve vertical and lateral accelerations and noise levels; while models for ground based vehicles also involve roll rate.

With rapid advances in sensor and condition monitoring technologies, railway infrastructure managers are turning their attention towards the promise that digital information and big data will help them understand and manage their assets more efficiently. In addition to the existing track geometry records, it is evident that track stiffness is a key physical quantity to help assess track quality and its long-term deterioration. The present paper analyses the role of track stiffness and its spatial variability through a set of computational experiments, varying other vehicle and track physical quantities such as vehicle unsprung mass, speed and track vertical irregularities. The support stiffness conditions are obtained using a sample procedure from an autoregressive integrated moving average model to generate a representative larger set of data from previously on-site measured data. A set of computational experiments is carefully designed, varying different physical variables, and a vehicle–track interaction model is used to estimate the track geometry deterioration rates. A series of log-linear regression models are then used to analyse the impact of the tested physical variables on the track deterioration. The main findings suggest that the spatial variability of track stiffness significantly contributes to the track deterioration rates, and thus it should be used in the future to better target the design and maintenance of railway track. Finally, a comparative study of some settlement models available in literature shows that they are very dependent on the test conditions under which they have been derived.

Ferrocenes are ubiquitous organometallic building blocks that comprise a Fe atom sandwiched between two cyclopentadienyl (Cp) rings that rotate freely at room temperature. Of widespread interest in fundamental studies and real-world applications, they have also attracted<br>some interest as functional elements of molecular-scale devices. Here we investigate the impact of<br>the configurational degrees of freedom of a ferrocene derivative on its single-molecule junction<br>conductance. Measurements indicate that the conductance of the ferrocene derivative, which is<br>suppressed by two orders of magnitude as compared to a fully conjugated analog, can be modulated<br>by altering the junction configuration. Ab initio transport calculations show that the low conductance is a consequence of destructive quantum interference effects that arise from the hybridization of metal-based d-orbitals and the ligand-based π-system. By rotating the Cp rings, the hybridization, and thus the quantum interference, can be mechanically controlled, resulting in a conductance modulation that is seen experimentally.<br>

An experiment was conducted at Horticultural Research Centre, SVP University of Agriculture and Technology, Meerut (UP) during Rabi season of 2018-19 to assess the impact of different INM doses on yield and quality parameters of garlic. A total of ten treatments consisting of combinations of inorganic fertilizers, organic fertilizers and bio-fertilizers like T1- (Control), T2RDF (100:50:50 kg NPK ha-1), T3-RDF + 20 kg sulphur + FYM 20 ton ha-1, T4- RDF + 20 kg sulphur + VC 4 ton ha-1, T5- 75% RDF + 40 kg sulphur + 5 ton FYM ha-1+ PSB 5 kg ha-1, T6-75% RDF + 40 kg sulphur + 2 ton VC + Azotobacter 5 kg ha-1, T7- 75% RDF + 40 kg sulphur + FYM 3 ton + VC 1 ton+ PSB 5 kg + Azotobacter 5kg ha-1, T8- 50% RDF + 40 kg sulphur + FYM 5 ton + VC2 ton + PSB 5 kg ha-1, T9- 50% RDF + 40 kg sulphur + FYM5 ton + VC 2 ton+ Azotobacter 5 kg ha-1and T10- 50% RDF + 40 kg sulphur + FYM 5 ton + VC2 ton + PSB 5 kg + Azotobacter 5 kg ha-1 were used in Randomized Block Design and replicated thrice. Out of these an application of T7 (75% RDF + 40 kg sulphur + FYM3 ton + VC 1 ton ha-1 + PSB 5 kg + Azotobacter 5 kg ha-1) was found to be significantly superior in term of yield and attributing parameters of garlic.

Análise e previsão de parâmetros de qualidade do ar são tópicos importantes da pesquisa atmosférica e ambiental atual, devido ao impacto causado pela poluição do ar na saúde humana. Este estudo examina a transformação do dióxido de nitrogênio (NO2) em ozônio (O3) no ambiente urbano, usando o diagrama de séries temporais. Foram utilizados dados de concentração de poluentes ambientais e variáveis meteorológicas para prever a concentração de O3 na atmosfera. Foi testado o emprego de modelos de regressão linear múltipla como ferramenta para a predição da concentração de O3. Os resultados indicam que o valor da temperatura e a presença de NO2 influenciam na concentração de O3 em Campo Grande, capital do Estado do Mato Grosso do Sul. Palavras-chave: Ozônio. Abstract Intrinsic alignments (IAs) of galaxies are an important contaminant for cosmic shear studies, but the modelling is complicated by the dependence of the signal on the source galaxy sample. In this paper, we use the halo model formalism to capture this diversity and examine its implications for Stage-III and Stage-IV cosmic shear surveys. We account for the different IA signatures at large and small scales, as well for the different contributions from central/satellite and red/blue galaxies, and we use realistic mocks to account for the characteristics of the galaxy populations as a function of redshift. We inform our model using the most recent observational findings: we include a luminosity dependence at both large and small scales and a radial dependence of the signal within the halo. We predict the impact of the total IA signal on the lensing angular power spectra, including the current uncertainties from the IA best-fits to illustrate the range of possible impact on the lensing signal: the lack of constraints for fainter galaxies is the main source of uncertainty for our predictions of the IA signal. We investigate how well effective models with limited degrees of freedom can account for the complexity of the IA signal. Although these lead to negligible biases for Stage-III surveys, we find that, for Stage-IV surveys, it is essential to at least include an additional parameter to capture the redshift dependence.

Late pear cultivars, such as ‘Conference’, can be stored for a long period if kept in good storage conditions. A three-year study (2011–2013) compared the impact of six-month storage using four technologies—normal atmosphere, normal atmosphere + 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), controlled atmosphere, and controlled atmosphere + 1-MCP—on the quality parameters of ‘Conference’ pears, such as mass loss, firmness, total soluble solids, acidity, antioxidant capacity, and the incidence of diseases and disorders. Additionally, the study analysed different storage conditions in terms of profitability, based on the market prices for pears in the seasons during which the pears were stored. The storage conditions had a very strong influence on the fruit quality parameters, and were found to affect most visibly the mass loss and the incidence of postharvest diseases and disorders. The storage of ‘Conference’ pears for 180 days in normal atmosphere is not economically viable, even if the fruit is subjected to 1-MCP treatment; at the same time, it is profitable to store ‘Conference’ pears in controlled atmosphere for the same period, no matter whether 1-MCP was applied or not.

As mature neutron stars are cold (on the relevant temperature scale), one has to carefully consider the state of matter in their interior. The outer kilometre or so is expected to freeze to form an elastic crust of increasingly neutron-rich nuclei, coexisting with a superfluid neutron component, while the star’s fluid core contains a mixed superfluid/superconductor. The dynamics of the star depend heavily on the parameters associated with the different phases. The presence of superfluidity brings new degrees of freedom—in essence we are dealing with a complex multi-fluid system—and additional features: bulk rotation is supported by a dense array of quantised vortices, which introduce dissipation via mutual friction, and the motion of the superfluid is affected by the so-called entrainment effect. This brief survey provides an introduction to—along with a commentary on our current understanding of—these dynamical aspects, paying particular attention to the role of entrainment, and outlines the impact of superfluidity on neutron-star seismology.

Since 2013, there has been an increase (>23%) in naval traffic using maritime routes and ports on the coastal fringe of Santa Marta, Colombia. Of major concern, and described by several studies, is the relationship between maritime traffic and coastal contamination. This study proposed a maritime traffic indicator considering the simultaneous effects of several relevant measurements of water quality parameters to estimate the impact of naval activity. The approach involved developing a model including the number of vessels, hull length, and permanence time in berths. In addition, water quality variables, considering climatic seasons, were used to verify association with maritime traffic and touristic activities. The high concentrations of total coliforms (TC) and dissolved/dispersed petroleum hydrocarbons in chrysene equivalents (DDPH) reported by the International Marina of Santa Marta (SM) were affected by the local anthropic activities, including tourism, naval traffic, and urban wastewater discharges. Moreover, our results suggest the occurrence of multiple chemical impacts within Tayrona National Natural Park (PNNT) affecting conservation goals. The estimation of the maritime traffic indicator proposed in this study may be an easy and more complete tool for future studies evaluating the impact of naval activities on environmental quality.
