The Navstar Global Positioning System, proposed for deployment in 1985, will have eight satellites equally spaced in each of three orbit planes at an inclination of 63°. Since the satellites will be in circular, 20000 km (12 h period), orbits and the nodes of the three orbit planes will be equally spaced, at least four satellites will be in view at any location. Range to three of the satellites, computed from the travel time of signal from the satellite to the ground, would give the position of the ground receiver. The measurement to the fourth satellite is required to synchronize the ground station clock with the satellite to provide a sufficiently accurate travel time. In order that the system may be demonstrated in early 1979, six satellites are now being launched into orbits that will provide the operational configuration over the southwestern part of the United States for a few hours each day. The accuracy of the instantaneous absolute position is expected to be 10 m. The relative position of two stationary receivers could be determined to 1 m accuracy in a few minutes even if the receivers are separated by 1000 km. Relative positions could be determined to better than 10 cm accuracy within a day.

Trip underreporting has long been a problem in household travel surveys because of the self-reporting nature of traditional survey methods. Memory decay, failure to understand or to follow survey instructions, unwillingness to report full details of travel, and simple carelessness have all contributed to the incomplete collection of travel data in self-reporting surveys. Because household trip survey data are the primary input into trip generation models, it has a potentially serious impact on transportation model outputs, such as vehicle miles of travel (VMT) and travel time. Global Positioning System (GPS) technology has been used as a supplement in the collection of personal travel data. Previous studies confirmed the feasibility of applying GPS technology to improve both the accuracy and the completeness of travel data. An analysis of the impact of trip underreporting on modeled VMT and travel times is presented. This analysis compared VMT and travel time estimates with GPS-measured data. These VMT and travel time estimates were derived by the trip assignment module of each region's travel demand model by using the trips reported in computer-assisted telephone inter views. This analysis used a subset of data from the California Statewide Household Travel Survey GPS Study and was made possible through the cooperation of the metropolitan planning organizations of the three study areas (Alameda, Sacramento, and San Diego, California).

Dari hasil relokasi kejadian gempa yang tercatat oleh Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG) dan inversi data Global Positioning System (GPS) menunjukkan bahwa terdapat celah seismik (seismic gaps) di selatan Jawa, yaitu wilayah di sepanjang batas lempeng aktif yang tidak mengalami gempa besar atau gempa selama lebih dari 30 tahun. Pada zona tersebut diperkirakan terjadi penguncian (locked) terhadap pergeseran lempeng (slip deficit) yang berakibat pada akumulasi pengumpulan energi dan berpotensi menimbulkan gempa megathrust yang bersifat tsunamigenik. Pada penelitian ini dilakukan pemodelan numerik tsunami menggunakan persamaan gelombang shallow water 2 dimensi dengan 3 skenario gempa megathrust akibat patahnya lempeng samudera di zona celah seismik selatan Jawa. Skenario patahan lempeng di selatan Jawa Barat menyebabkan gempa dengan Mw 8,9, di selatan Jawa Tengah dan Jawa Timur sebesar Mw 8,8, dan untuk skenario patahan dari Jawa Barat sampai Jawa Timur sebesar Mw 9,1. Dari hasil simulasi selama 10 jam menggunakan software TUNAMI N2, dihasilkan gelombang tsunami setinggi maksimum 6 meter di pesisir selatan Jawa untuk gempa berkekuatan Mw 8,9, 12 meter untuk gempa berkekuatan Mw 8,8,  dan 20 meter untuk gempa berkekuatan Mw 9,1. Propagasi dan travel time tsunami diamati oleh outlet-outlet ARLINDO berupa shallow pressure gauge (SPG) yang ditempatkan di jalur-jalur ARLINDO.

Seiring dengan pesatnya kemajuan teknologi saat ini, kebutuhan manusia menjadi lebih beragam, termasuk kebutuhan akan informasi. Tidak hanya media informasinya yang semakin beragam, jenis informasi yang dibutuhkan juga semakin beragam, salah satunya adalah kebutuhan informasi akan posisi kita terhadap lingkungan sekitar. Untuk memenuhi kebutuhan itu sebuah sistem pemosisi diciptakan. Sistem pemosisi yang banyak digunakan saat ini cenderung berfokus pada lingkup ruang yang besar (global) padahal, dalam lingkup ruang yang lebih kecil (lokal) sebuah sistem pemosisi juga diperlukan, seperti di ruang-ruang terbuka umum (taman atau kebun), ataupun dalam sebuah bangunan. Sistem pemosisi lokal yang ada saat ini sering kali membutuhkan infrastruktur yang mahal dalam pembangunannya. Aplikasi Pemosisi Lokal Berbasis Android dengan Menggunakan GPS ini adalah sebuah aplikasi yang dibangun untuk memenuhi kebutuhan pengguna akan informasi lokasi dan posisi mereka terhadap lingkungan di sekitarnya dalam lingkup ruang yang lebih kecil (lokal) dengan memanfaatkan perangkat GPS (Global Positioning System) yang telah tertanam dalam perangkat smartphone Android agar infrastruktur yang dibutuhkan lebih efisien. Dalam implementasinya, Aplikasi Pemosisi Lokal ini bertindak sebagai klien dengan dukungan sebuah Database Server yang berfungsi sebagai media penyimpanan data serta sumber referensi informasi yang dapat diakses melalui jaringan internet sehingga tercipta sebuah sistem yang terintegrasi secara global. Kata kunci: aplikasi, informasi, pemosisi, GPS.
