Sn-3Ag-3Bi-3In solder has been investigated to improve the understanding of microstructure formation in this solder during solidification and soldering to Cu and Ni substrates. The as-solidified microstructures of Sn-3Ag-3Bi-3In samples were found to consist of a significant fraction of βSn dendrites with a complex eutectic between the dendrites. In total five phases were observed to form during solidification: βSn, Ag3Sn, Bi, ζAg and a “Sn-In-Bi” ternary compound. Soldering of Sn-3Ag-3Bi-3In to substrates changed the phase equilibria in the system and caused the formation of additional phases: Cu6Sn5 during soldering to Cu and Ni3Sn4 and metastable NiSn4 during soldering to Ni. It is shown that metastable NiSn4 forms as a primary phase in a complex 5-component Sn-3Ag-3Bi-3In-Ni system. In and Bi were detected in solid solution in the βSn matrix in amounts of ~1.5-2at% and ~1.2at% respectively. Bi also existed as fine particles of two distinct types. (i): sub-micron (<500nm) coral-like particles and (ii) facetted particles measuring up to 7-8 μm.

AbstractTwo model aluminium-magnesium alloys, containing 3 and 7.5 wt.% of Mg, were subjected to plastic deformation by means of hydrostatic extrusion (HE). Two degrees of deformation were imposed by two subsequent reductions of the diameter. Microstructural analysis and tensile tests of the materials in the initial state and after deformation were performed. For both materials, HE extrusion resulted in the deformation of the microstructure—formation of the un-equilibrium grain boundaries and partition of the grains. What is more, HE resulted in a significant increase of tensile strength and decrease of the elongation, mostly after the first degree of deformation.

3N nickel has been deformed by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) at 400°C up to 3 passes using route A. The texture with respect to position in the deformed billet, i.e. from top to bottom, has been measured with high-energy synchrotron radiation. It is characterized by texture components typical for simple shear in the intersection plane of the square-shaped 90° bent channel. Besides, an oblique cube component is observed. Orientation imaging microscopy clearly shows that this component is due to partial recrystallization. Intensities of the texture components as well as deviations from their ideal shear positions vary from the top to the bottom of the billet and with the number of passes. The change of the intensity of texture components and the texture gradient investigated is discussed. Special emphasis is put on the influence of dynamic recrystallization on texture and microstructure formation during ECAP of fcc metals.
