Titanium dioxide nanoparticles have been synthesized by a novel modified sol-gel for the fabrication of natural dye sensitized solar cells. The natural photo sensitizer extracted from Cordia sebestena flower was mixed with the precursor solution. The flower dye has put the effort of a surfactant which has resulted colourized TiO2 instead of white TiO2. Whencompared to the conventional sol-gel method, this modified process has enhanced the properties of TiO2 like, morphology, uniformity in dye absorption. It has reduced the agglomeration of TiO2 and dye aggregation significantly. The optimized molecular geometry of sebestenoid D, the major pigment of Cordia sebestena and HOMO-LUMO plot are found using density functional theory. The TiO2 nanoparticles were subjected to structural, optical, spectral and morphological studies which showed improved properties in modified sol-gel process. Ecofriendly and low-cost natural dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) were fabricated using conventional and pre-dye treated TiO2 sensitized by Cordia sebestena flower extract. The I-V studies showed the solar light photon to electron conversion efficiencies of 0.87 and 1.28 % for sol-gel and modified sol-gel methods, respectively. There has been an enhancement in efficiency by 47 % in modified sol-gel method which is very much promising in terms of efficiency for natural dye sensitized solar cells.

In this work, La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (LSCO) perovskite oxide with perfect crystallinity was successfully synthesized via a sol–gel method and then used as counter electrodes (CEs) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The DSSCs with LSCO CEs exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity for the triiodide reduction and yielded a power conversion efficiency of 7.17%, which is greater than that of the Pt electrode (7.06%). Compared with the hydrothermal method and solvothermal method, sol–gel method is more suitable for large scale preparation. This work should open up a new class of CE materials for low-cost and high-efficiency DSSCs.

Purpose: The article presents the results of research on ZnO nanopowder prepared using sol-gel method that is the easy process enabling us to control shape and size of particles The purpose of this article is to synthesized ZnO nanostructures by sol-gel method and characterized them for use in dye sensitized solar cells. Design/methodology/approach: Zinc oxide nanopowder was synthesized by using zinc acetate dehydrate as a precursor. The prepared nanopowder has been subjected to structural analysis using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) images were taken with a Zeiss Supra 35. Qualitative studies of chemical composition were also performed using the Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS). The structure of zinc oxide was investigated by X-ray crystallography The absorbance of zinc oxide layers with and without dye were measured by Thermo Scientific Evolution 220 spectrophotometer equipped with a xenon lamp in the wavelength range from 190 nm to 1100 nm. Findings: Sol-gel method allows the formation of uniform nanoparticles of zinc oxide. The nanoparticles have been successfully used in photoelectrode of dye sensitized solar cell. The light harvesting efficiency of the electrode it remains in a wide spectral range above 85%, which gives better results than in the case of titanium dioxide. Research limitations/implications: The next step in the research will be to investigate the ZnO/NiO composite on the properties of the photoelectrode of dye sensitized solar cell. Practical implications: he unique properties of produced ZnO nanostructural materials have caused their interest in such fields as medicine, transparent electronics and photovoltaics. Originality/value: The ZnO nanoparticles were prepared using sol-gel method and then effectively used in the photoanode of dye sensitized solar cell.
