Abstract In this study, the effect of current on the tensile and microstructural characteristics of magnetic arc oscillation welded AZ31B magnesium alloy joints has been investigated. Five joints were constructed using different levels of current (65 A - 85 A). It was found that the joints constructed using a current of 75 A yielded superior tensile properties as compared to the other joints. The formation of finer grains and higher hardness in fusion zone and uniformly distributed precipitates are the main reasons for the superior tensile properties of these joints.

AZ31B magnesium alloy and T2 Cu metal plates with the thickness of 2mm were bonded by argon tungsten arc welding (TIG) under the conditions that the welding current is 100A and the welding speed is 150 mm/min. The microstructure, phase composition and properties of welded joint were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro-hardness test. The results show that AZ31B magnesium alloy and T2 Cu combined well with no cracks, porosities, incomplete penetration and other metallurgical defects. A transition zone composed of equiaxed and columnar crystals of α-Cu exists between the weld metal and base metal Cu, its width is about 80μm. The central area of the weld is made up of α-Mg matrix and Mg-Cu eutectic. The joint consists of α-Cu, α-Mg, Cu2Mg, Mg2Cu and little MgO, CuO phase. The micro-hardness of weld zone is significantly higher than that of the base metals, and its heat affected zone appears softening phenomenon.

Orthogonal experiment method was used on DC CMT welding of AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet. The tensile test was carried out on the CMT5305 microcomputer control universal testing machine .The effect regular of welding current, arc length correction and welding speed on tensile strength and elongation was analyzed and acquired the optimal combination of process parameters. That is, welding current is 62A, arc length correction is +30% and welding speed is 50cm/min. The microhardness test on joints was carried out. Its found that the curve of microhardness is "W" shaped and the micro-hardness of HAZ is minimum and that of weld zone is maximum.

In this investigation an attempt has been made to study the effect of welding on fusion characteristics of pulsed current gas tungsten arc welded AZ31B magnesium alloy joints. Five joints were fabricated using different levels of welding speed (105 mm/min –145 mm/min). From this investigation, it is found that the joints fabricated using a welding speed of 135 mm/min yielded superior tensile properties compared to other joints. The formation of finer grains and higher hardness in fusion zone and uniformly distributed precipitates are the main reasons for the higher tensile properties of these joints
