The microstructures and corrosion resistance of AZ91 and AZ91+0.5 wt.% erbium (Er) magnesium alloys were studied, respectively. The results show that the Er addition in scrap AZ91 magnesium alloy can improve the corrosion resistance, markedly. The discontinuous precipitation phase (DPP) for Mg17Al12was retarded and the amount of DPP was decreased by 41% due to the formation of Al8ErMn4phase during solidification. The amount of continuous precipitation phase (CPP) in grains was decreased by 8% because of the formation of Al7ErMn5phase during solidification.

Magnesium alloys offer high potential for lightweight constructions, e.g. in automotive applications. However, their application range is limited due to their low corrosion resistance. In the present study, the influence of corrosion on the microstructure and the depending mechanical properties under cyclic loading were characterized for the creep-resistant DieMag422 (Mg4Al2Ba-2Ca) and AE42 magnesium alloys. In this context, fatigue properties in distilled water and sodium chloride solutions were assessed in constant amplitude tests. The results were correlated with corrosion properties of the alloys, which were evaluated by immersion tests. Corrosion-and deformation-induced microstructural changes were observed by light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), yielding a structure-property-relationship for a comprehensive understanding of mechanical and corrosive deterioration mechanisms.

Due to their high strength-to-weight-ratio, magnesium alloys are very attractive for use in automotive engineering. For application at elevated temperatures, the alloys must be creep-resistant. Therefore, the influence of the operating temperature on the material properties under quasistatic and cyclic load has to be understood. A previous study investigated tensile-tensile fatigue behavior of the magnesium alloys DieMag422 and AE42 at room temperature (RT). The aim of this study was the comparison of both alloys regarding compression, tensile, and compression-compression fatigue behavior. The quasistatic behavior was determined by means of tensile and compression tests, and the tensile-compression asymmetry was analyzed. In temperature increase fatigue tests (TIFT) and constant amplitude tests (CAT), the temperature influence on the cyclic creeping (ratcheting) behavior was investigated, and mechanisms-relevant test temperatures were determined. Furthermore, characteristic fracture mechanisms were evaluated with investigations of the microstructure and the fracture surfaces. The initial material was analyzed in computed tomographic scans and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses.

Magnesium alloy as a green material in the 21st century, because of its excellent physical and mechanical properties of metallic materials as an ideal in the automotive industry, electronic industry and aviation, aerospace and other industries[1]. However, poor corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys become an important issue hinder application of magnesium alloys[2]. So magnesium alloy corrosion problems and the current status of research paper reviews several magnesium alloy protection methods at home and abroad, and also highlighted with our latest laser shock (LSP) study of AZ91 magnesium alloy at high strain rates of corrosion resistance results.
