In this work, the experimental and numerical results from the study of the effects caused in a submerged jet flow by the change in the wall thickness of the circular tube from which said flow originates are presented. For small values of the Reynolds number Re (Re\approx0.11), four cases, regarding the ratio of pipe wall thickness to its radius, are considered: (I) pipe thickness is a fourth of the radius, (II) pipe thickness is a half the radius, (III) pipe thickness is equal to the radius and (IV) pipe thickness is three times the radius. The Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique was used in order to obtain experimentally the velocity and streamlines distributions. A numerical code based on the finite difference method was developed to solve the motion governing equations and the numerical results were compared with the values obtained experimentally. 

The governing equations for submerged buoyant jet are solved numerically using the standard k   model for turbulence closure. Comparison shows that results from simulation of this jet in quiescent ambient are in good agreement with the existing data. Simulation is also performed for this submerged jet in moving ambient for the seasonal conditions of a typical steam power plant situated nearby a river. Study of trajectories and excess temperatures of the jets in moving ambient show small vertical rises for the regulated excess temperatures over the year.

The merchant ships are continuously recruited by the world meteorological organization (WMO) as Voluntary Observing Ship (VOS) for the collect of meteorological parameters at the ocean surface. VOS meteorological observation includes many parameters such as the wind speed measured by anemometers. This measurement is biased by the presence of ship and superstructure. Little work was carried out in this field. Between them we find the experimental work at a low speed wind tunnel of Southampton University which studies the airflow distortion over simple models (generic models) of VOS merchant ship. This study presents numerical results of a 3D simulation analyzing airflow effect above the bridge of a generic merchant ship models involved in VOS. For this purpose three-dimensional, stationary and turbulent, numerical simulation has been achieved the flow over the bridge of a tanker and a container ship at 1/ 46 scale using a numerical code and CFX code with turbulence k-ε models. This numerical study allows us to know the position of the line of equality as well as the zone of acceleration and deceleration of the flow. The results obtained numerically by numerical code and CFX code are compared with those obtained experimentally in the wind tunnel of Southampton University. Numerical results are in a good agreement with experimental results and can be used as a reference to find the position of the equality line and to know the error range in of the anemometer velocity reading.

A numerical study is conducted to investigate the capability of the flux-limiter TVD schemes in capturing sharp discontinuities like shock waves. For this purpose, four classical test problems are considered such as slowly moving shock, gas Riemann problem with high density and pressure ratios, shock wave interaction with a density disturbance and shock-acoustic interaction. The governing equations consist of one-dimensional and quasi-one-dimensional Euler equations solved using an in-house numerical code. In order to validate the solution, the obtained results are compared with other results found in the literature.

This article presents the design of a specific unmanned aerial vehicle UAV prototype own building. Our UAV is a flying wing type and is able to take off with a little boost. This system happily combines some major advantages taken from planes namely the ability to fly horizontal, at a constant altitude and of course, the great advantage of a long flight-time. The aerodynamic models presented in this paper are optimized to improve the operational performance of this aerial vehicle, especially in terms of stability and the possibility of a long gliding flight-time. Both aspects are very important for the increasing of the goals� efficiency and for the getting work jobs. The presented simulations were obtained using ANSYS 13 installed on our university� cluster system. In a next step the numerical results will be compared with those during experimental flights. This paper presents the main results obtained from numerical simulations and the obtained magnitudes of the main flight coefficients.

AbstractRock tunnels excavated using drilling and blasting technique in jointed rock masses often have a very uneven and rough excavation surface. Experience from previous studies shows that the unevenness of a rock surface has a large impact on the support effect of shotcrete lining. However, clear conclusions regarding the effect of 2D and 3D uneven surfaces were not obtained due to limited studies in the literature. The numerical analyses reported in this paper were made to investigate the influence of the surface unevenness of a circular tunnel opening on the support effect of shotcrete using a 3D numerical code (3DEC). The models were first calibrated with the help of observations and measured data obtained from physical model tests. The influential factors were investigated further in this numerical study after calibration had been achieved. The numerical analyses show that, in general, the unevenness of a tunnel surface produces negative support effects due to stress concentrations in recesses (compressive) and at apexes (tensile) after excavation. However, shotcrete sprayed on a doubly waved uneven surface has better support effect compared to shotcrete sprayed on a simply waved tunnel surface. The development of shear strength (specifically frictional strength) on the uneven interface between the shotcrete and the rock contributes to this effect, in the condition where bonding of the shotcrete does not work effectively. The interface is a crucial element when the interaction between the rock and shotcrete is to be simulated. When an entire tunnel surface is covered by shotcrete with high modulus, more failures will occur in the shotcrete especially when rock surface is uneven. Based on the numerical model cases examined, some recommendations on how to incorporate tunnel surface conditions (2D or 3D unevenness) in the design of a shotcrete lining are given.

Grinding, characterized by its high specific energy consumption, may generate high grinding zone temperature. These can cause thermal damage to the ground surface and poor surface integrity, especially in the grinding of difficult-to-machine materials. In this paper, experimental and fem study on grinding temperature during surface grinding of Ti-6Al-4V with different cooling methods. A comparison between the experimental and numerical results is made. It is indicated that the difference between experimental and numerical results is below 15% and the numerical results can be considered reliable. Grinding temperature can be more effectively reduced with CPMJ than that with cold air jet and flood cooling method.

The CFD software FLUENT was used as the foundation to develop the numerical wave flume, in which the governing equations are the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the standard k~ε turbulence model. The wave generating and absorbing were introduced into the RANS equations as the source terms using the relaxation approach. A new module of the wave generating and absorbing function, which is suitable for FLUENT based on the volume of fluid method (VOF), was established. Within the numerical wave flume, the reflected waves from the model within the computation domain can be absorbed effectively before second reflection appears due to the wave generating boundary. The computational results of the wave pressures on the bottom of the rectangular slab were validated for the different relative clearance by the experimental data. Good agreements were found.

In this work, we attempt to establish a general analytical approximation of the convection heat transfer from an isothermal wedge surface to fluids for all Prandtl numbers. The flow has been assumed to be laminar and steady state. The governing equations have been written in dimensionless form using a similarity method. A simple ad hoc technique is used to solve analytically the governing equations by proposing a general formula of the velocity profile. This formula verifies the boundary conditions and the equilibrium of the governing equations in the whole spatial region and permits us to obtain analytically the temperature profiles for all Prandtl numbers and for various configurations of the wedge surface. A comparison with the numerical results is given for all spatial regions and in wide Prandtl number values. A new Nusselt number expression is obtained for various configurations of the wedge surface and compared with the numerical results in wide Prandtl number values.

The wave-induced resonant flow in a narrow gap between a stationary hull and a vertical wall is studied experimentally and numerically. Vortex shedding from the sharp bilge edge of the hull gives rise to a quadratically damped free surface response in the gap, where the damping coefficient is approximately independent of wave steepness and frequency. Particle image velocimetry and direct numerical simulations were used to characterise the shedding dynamics and explore the influence of discretisation in the measurements and computations. Secondary separation was identified as a particular feature which occurred at the hull bilge in these gap flows. This can result in the generation of a system with multiple vortical regions and asymmetries between the inflow and outflow. The shedding dynamics was found to exhibit a high degree of invariance to the amplitude in the gap and the spanwise position of the barge. The new measurements and the evaluation of numerical models of varying fidelity can assist in informing offshore operations such as the side by side offloading from floating liquefied natural gas facilities.
