One of the hydrogeochemical parameters that classify groundwater as mineral water is the content of fluoride ions. Their concentration is both important and limited for bottled mineral waters. Hydrochemical research of mineral waters in the surrounding area of Bukulja and Brajkovac pluton, in central Serbia, was conducted in order to define the chemical composition and genesis of these waters. They are carbonated waters, with content of fluoride ranging from 0.2 up to 6.6 mg/L. Since hydrochemical analyses showed variations in the major water chemistry, it was obvious that, apart from hydrochemical research, some explorations of the structure of the regional terrain would be inevitable. For these purposes, some additional geological research was performed, creating an adequate basis for the interpretation of the genesis of these carbonated mineral waters. The results confirmed the significance of the application of hydrochemical methods in the research of mineral waters. The work tended to emphasize that ?technological treatment? for decreasing the concentration of fluoride in mineral waters occurs in nature, indicating the existence of natural defluoridization.

Montezuma Well is a geothermal limnocrene spring within Montezuma Castle National Monument, Yavapai County, Arizona, U.S.A. The Well’s unusual geological qualities, water chemistry, and a history of aquatic plant collecting are discussed. Evidence to support the fact that a unique species of Potamogeton has likely grown in this location for thousands of years and is now recognized as the seventh apparent autochthonous endemic species from this small area is presented. Although this new species shares a few superficial characters with P. illinoensis Morong, it is easily distinguished by its massive height (7–8 m tall), lack of floating leaves, long acuminate leaf apices of its submerged leaves, and bright translucent green leaf color. Natural resource managers need up-to-date information about how people interact with public lands and the meanings these places hold for use in planning and decision-making. This case study explains the use of public participatory Geographic Information System (GIS) to generate and analyze spatial patterns of the uses and values people hold for the Browns Canyon National Monument in Colorado. Participants drew on maps and answered questions at both live community meetings and online sessions to develop a series of maps showing detailed responses to different types of resource uses and landscape values. Results can be disaggregated by interaction types, different meaningful values, respondent characteristics, seasonality, or frequency of visit. The study was a test for the Bureau of Land Management and US Forest Service, who jointly manage the monument as they prepare their land management plan. If the information generated is as helpful throughout the entire planning process as initial responses seem, this protocol could become a component of the Bureau’s planning tool kit.
