Development of a 14-digit hydrologic coding scheme and boundary data set for New Jersey

PURPOSE: Racial and ethnic disparities in cancer care near the end of life (EOL) have been recognized, but EOL care experienced by Medicaid beneficiaries is not well understood. We assessed the prevalence of aggressive EOL care and hospice enrollment for Medicaid beneficiaries and determined whether racial and ethnic disparities exist. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We identified Medicaid beneficiaries (age 21-64 years) who were diagnosed from 2011 to 2015 with stage IV breast and colorectal cancer and who died by January 2016 through a New Jersey State Cancer Registry–Medicaid claims linked data set. We measured aggressive EOL care (> 1 hospitalization, > 1 emergency department [ED] visit, any intensive care unit [ICU] admission in the last 30 days of life, and receipt of chemotherapy in the last 14 days of life) and hospice enrollment. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to determine factors associated with aggressive EOL care and hospice enrollment. RESULTS: Of the 349 patients, 217 (62%) received at least one of the following measures of aggressive EOL care: > 1 hospitalization (27%), > 1 ED visit (31%), ICU admission (30%), and chemotherapy (34%). The adjusted odds of receiving any aggressive care were 1.87 times higher (95% CI, 1.08 to 3.26) for non-Hispanic (NH) Black patients compared with NH White patients. Only 39% of patients enrolled in hospice. No significant differences in hospice enrollment were observed by race or ethnicity. CONCLUSION: The majority of Medicaid patients with advanced cancer received aggressive EOL care and were not enrolled in hospice. NH Black patients were more likely to receive aggressive EOL care. Further work to understand processes leading to suboptimal EOL care within Medicaid populations and among racial and ethnic minority groups is warranted.

AbstractThe time at which the Laurentide Ice Sheet reached its maximum extent and subsequently retreated from its terminal moraine in New Jersey has been constrained by bracketing radiocarbon ages on preglacial and postglacial sediments. Here, we present measurements of in situ produced 10Be and 26Al in 16 quartz-bearing samples collected from bedrock outcrops and glacial erratics just north of the terminal moraine in north-central New Jersey; as such, our ages represent a minimum limit on the timing of ice recession from the moraine. The data set includes field and laboratory replicates, as well as replication of the entire data set five years after initial measurement. We find that recession of the Laurentide Ice Sheet from the terminal moraine in New Jersey began before 25.2±2.1 ka (10Be, n=16, average, 1 standard deviation). This cosmogenic nuclide exposure age is consistent with existing limiting radiocarbon ages in the study area and cosmogenic nuclide exposure ages from the terminal moraine on Martha’s Vineyard ~300 km to the northeast. The age we propose for Laurentide Ice Sheet retreat from the New Jersey terminal position is broadly consistent with regional and global climate records of the last glacial maximum termination and records of fluvial incision.

Tomografi elektrik berguna untuk mencitrakan distribusi impedansi pada suatu benda. Salah satu aplikasi Elektrikal Tomografi adalah di bidang biomedika. Tungkai sebagai organ tubuh memiliki resistansi yang beragam bergantung pada material jaringan yang menyusunnya. Potongan tungkai (Tibia Fibula) dapat disederhanakan menjadi suatu phantom model yang terdiri dari tiga objek dengan resistansi berbeda, yaitu merepresentasikan tulang, otot, dan pembuluh darah. Dengan menggunakan boundary data simulator (BDS) berbasis rangkaian listrik dengan menggunakan pola arus tetanggan, dibangkitkan data set untuk phantom yang merepresentasikan jaringan melintang tungkai. Data set yang dibangkitkan merupakan input inversi untuk memperoleh citra Non Destructive Imaging dengan menggunakan software rekonstruksi semisal EIDORS (electrical impedance tomography and diffuse optical tomography reconstruction software), sebagai kalibrasi rekonstruksi.

AbstractWe introduce a new way to measure interest group agendas and demonstrate an approach to extending the CAP topic coding scheme to policy domains at lower levels of analysis. We use public comments on regulatory proposals in US education policy to examine the topics contained in policy arguments. We map the education policy space using a data set of 493 comments and 5315 hand-coded comment paragraphs. A unique measurement model accounts for group and topic diversity and allows us to validate our approach. The findings have implications for measuring topic agendas in lower-level policy domains and understanding group coalitions and competition in education policy. We contribute to text-as-data approaches tracing policy change in the study of public policy. The findings suggest the relationship between issue attention observed by scholars and larger policy reform movements.

Purpose: Data papers are a promising genre of scholarly communication, in which research data are described, shared, and published. Rich documentation of data, including adequate contextual information, enhances the potential of data reuse. This study investigated the extent to which the components of data papers specified by journals represented the types of contextual information necessary for data reuse.Methods: A content analysis of 15 data paper templates/guidelines from 24 data journals indexed by the Web of Science was performed. A coding scheme was developed based on previous studies, consisting of four categories: general data set properties, data production information, repository information, and reuse information.Results: Only a few types of contextual information were commonly requested by the journals. Except data format information and file names, general data set properties were specified less often than other categories of contextual information. Researchers were frequently asked to provide data production information, such as information on the data collection, data producer, and related project. Repository information focused on data identifiers, while information about repository reputation and curation practices was rarely requested. Reuse information mostly involved advice on the reuse of data and terms of use.Conclusion: These findings imply that data journals should provide a more standardized set of data paper components to inform reusers of relevant contextual information in a consistent manner. Information about repository reputation and curation could also be provided by data journals to complement the repository information provided by the authors of data papers and to help researchers evaluate the reusability of data.

In this work, the researchers explore how a professional engineering designer documents thoughts during the design process. This research will increase understanding of design thinking, improve the effectiveness of the design profession, and create tools for design education. Analyzing professional design behavior is traditionally done using timed design activities that are audio and video recorded to collect design data. The methodology used here is to analyze a set of handwritten design journals used for one long-term project. A comprehensive cognitive coding scheme is applied that has been verified by applying it to the data set and refined through iteration. The coding scheme has also been validated by producing comparative results to similar design studies found in the literature such as Atman, Suwa, and Jain. The results found that the professional was very detailed, spent a considerable amount of time on project management and that students are recording in the design journal for different reasons and at different times during the design process than the professional.

Buah manggis sebagai salah satu jenis buah tropis yang eksotis memiliki resistansi yang beragam bergantung pada material jaringan yang menyusunnya. Penampang buah manggis dimodelkan dalam bentuk phantom resistor model yang merepresentasikan tiga objek dengan resistansi berbeda, yaitu kulit luar, daging buah, dan biji. Dengan menggunakan boundary data simulator (BDS) berbasis rangkaian listrik dengan menggunakan pola arus tetanggan, dibangkitkan data set untuk phantom yang merepresentasikan jaringan melintang buah manggis. This article examines, theoretically and empirically, the impact of municipal waste management policies such as unit pricing and recycling on the demand for residential municipal solid waste disposal. Using a unique cross-sectional data set for 149 municipalities from five New Jersey counties, the empirical analysis estimates the demand for household municipal waste disposal. In the presence of recycling opportunities, the estimated demand elasticity is higher than that found in previous studies. This suggests that bag or tag unit pricing programs, combined with curb-side recycling, will improve social welfare and reduce municipal expenditures on waste disposal services. Mandatory government-supported recycling programs throughout New Jersey afford an opportunity to consider both the direct impact of recycling and the interaction between unit pricing and such recycling programs on municipal waste disposal.
