Abstract. Riparian zone delineation is a central issue for managing rivers and adjacent areas; however, criteria used to delineate them are still under debate. The area inundated by a 50-yr flood has been indicated as an optimal hydrological descriptor for riparian areas. This detailed hydrological information is usually only available for populated areas at risk of flooding. In this work we created several floodplain surfaces by means of two different GIS-based geomorphological approaches using digital elevation models (DEMs), in an attempt to find hydrologically meaningful potential riparian zones for river networks at the river basin scale. Objective quantification of the performance of the two geomorphologic models is provided by analysing coinciding and exceeding areas with respect to the 50-yr flood surface in different river geomorphological types.

Topographic delineation is critical to watershed hydrologic modeling, which may significantly influence the accuracy of model simulations. In most traditional delineation methods, however, surface depressions are fully filled and hence, watershed-scale hydrologic modeling is based on depression-less topography. In reality, dynamic filling and spilling of depressions affect hydrologic connectivity and surface runoff processes, especially in depression-dominated areas. Thus, accounting for the internal hydrologic connectivity within a watershed is crucial to such hydrologic simulations. The objective of this study was to improve watershed delineation to further reveal such complex hydrologic connectivity. To achieve this objective, a new algorithm, HUD-DC, was developed for delineation of hydrologic units (HUs) associated with depressions and channels. Unlike the traditional delineation methods, HUD-DC considers both filled and unfilled conditions to identify depressions and their overflow thresholds, as well as all channels. Furthermore, HUs, which include puddle-based units and channel-based units, were identified based on depressions and channels and the detailed connectivity between the HUs was determined. A watershed in North Dakota was selected for testing HUD-DC, and Arc Hydro was also utilized to compare with HUD-DC in depression-oriented delineation. The results highlight the significance of depressions and the complexity of hydrologic connectivity. In addition, HUD-DC was utilized to evaluate the variations in topographic characteristics under different filling conditions, which provided helpful guidance for the identification of filling thresholds to effectively remove artifacts in digital elevation models.

The Republic

The authors present the experience of obtaining various types of digital elevation models on the territory of the Republic of Mordovia based on using GIS and geoinformation technologies. The possibilities of operative creating a series of derivative thematic geoinformation and cartographic models of several most important morphometric relief indicators characterizing the objects’ shape and structure are considered. The features of digital simulation based on triangulation irregular network (TIN) using Delaunay triangulation are shown in details. The matter of the resulting relief-TIN-models evaluation is analyzed. The features of the technique, the technological sequence of creation and examples of various options for DEM and derived geoinformation-cartographic materials of a number of territories of the Republic of Mordovia (Temnikovsky and Bolsheignatsky administrative regions, as well as Vindrey River Basin) using the capabilities of various software – the software package of scientific and engineering graphics Surfer and GIS ArcGIS are considered. The directions and possibilities of further theoretical and applied using various DEM variants and information obtained basing on geoinformational mapping and modeling the relief, are determined, especially in assessing the risk of emergency situations.
