A probabilistic method named discovery process modeling is described for estimating the quantity of undiscovered oil and gas resources in Aral sea area in the North Ustrurt basin. In this model, the pool size distribution was demonstrated, and the numbers and sizes of undiscovered pools were estimated. The most likely remaining plays potential in Area sea area is 3447.2 Billions of standard cubic meters of gas in place. The eastern Jurassic-Cretaceous play bears 2901.5 Billions of standard cubic meters of undiscovered gas in place, and 17 gas pools are yet to be discovered; the paleogene-Neogene play bears 545.7 Billions of standard cubic meters of undiscovered gas in place, and 13 gas pools are yet to be discovered. Based on resources analysis, the Aral sea area is a prospecting exploration area for gas, and the emphasis should be strengthened on the eastern Jurassic-Cretaceous play.

Abstract The objective of this article is an estimation of the oil and gas potential of the north of the Siberian platform and adjacent shelf. The Siberian platform is characterized by a large concentration of oil and gas resources in the southern and central parts of the platform. The main oil and gas province of the Siberian Platform is the Leno-Tungus oil and gas province. The oil- bearing strata in the Lena-Tungus oil and gas province are confined to the Riphean, Vendian, Lower-Middle Cambrian deposits, in which large oil and gas fields are discovered. In modern contours the Siberian platform in the north and north-west is fringed by the Yenisei-Khatanga regional trough. In the east, the Yenisei-Khatanga regional trough is connected with the Anabar- Lena trough, framing the north-eastern part of the Siberian platform. Analysis of the available geological and geophysical materials shows a fairly high potential of the Anabar-Lena and Yenisei-Khatanga troughs for the discovery of large hydrocarbon fields. The basic understanding of the geologic-tectonic structure and petroleum potential of the northern part of the Siberian Platform and the adjacent shelf of the Arctic zone are currently based on seismic data by the method of the common depth point (CDP), tied to the existing deep search and parametric wells. Representations of the deep structure and oil and gas potential of specific areas, the allocation of targeted promising oil and gas horizons can change dramatically as the depth of seismic acquisition of the method of the common depth point increases and the software for processing and interpreting seismic data is improved. The localized oil and gas resources of the north of the Siberian platform and adjacent shelf are 41017,3, subsequently, 27582,3 - onshore and offshore - 13435 MMT (million tons) of oil equivalent.

An entire generation of American politicians were concerned about the growing U.S. dependence on imported oil and natural gas. However, in the last few years the situation has changed dramatically: there was started the development of not only the resources of shale gas, but shale oil. As a result in political and economic circles they began to talk about it as the most significant breakthrough in the energy resources development since the oil boom in Texas in the late 1920s. How large are these resources? What problems have to be overcome if the available potential will be realized? How will this problems affect the U.S. energy policy? Concerns about the adequacy of regulation, in particular the environmental issues associated with the non-conventional hydrocarbons production, have led to the internal public debate on the impact of unconventional oil and gas resources mining boom. One thing is clear: significant amounts of additional oil and gas supplies in the U.S. will have far-reaching political consequences for the world. The article presents the different points of view on the prospects for oil and gas production in North America, as well as on the political issues related to it.

Energy security has emerged in recent years as one of the cornerstones of the European Union’s (EU’s) foreign policy. The EU is highly dependent on imports of oil and gas, 35 per cent of which comes from Russia. Diversification of energy supplies is thus a key goal for the EU. The Caspian region contains some of the largest undeveloped oil and gas reserves in the world. The intense interest shown by the major international oil and gas companies testifies to its potential. Although the area is unlikely to become “another Middle East”, it could become a major oil supplier at the margin, much as the North Sea is today. As such it could help increase world energy security by diversifying global sources of supply. Development of the region’s resources still faces considerable obstacles. This study focuses on the countries along the southern rim of the former Soviet Union that are endowed with significant oil and gas resources: Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in Central Asia, and Azerbaijan in Transcaucasia. The Southern Energy Corridor (SEC), which aims to link Caspian Basin and potentially Middle East gas supplies to Europe, is one of the EU’s six priority axes of energy infrastructures. Drawing on the external governance literature, this article provides an analysis of the EU’s efforts in the wider Black Sea area to increase its energy security. It concludes that despite difficult domestic and geopolitical obstacles, the EU is pushing forward its objective to establish the SEC.
