Doubt about the quality of tap water, due to its color, taste and unpleasant odors, forces a large part of the population of the city of Daloa (west-central of Cote d�Ivoire) to turn to spring and traditional wells waters whose quality is unknown. This study aims to assess the level of nitrate pollution of these shallow aquifers through 29 points including 9 spring and 20 traditional wells spread all over the city. Nitrate concentrations range from 2.5 mg/L to 301.1 mg/L, with 30% of the wells containing an excess of nitrate, beyond the WHO drinking standard (50 mg/L). The map of levels of nitrate concentrations in the city�s wells and springs shows the exposure of the populations of the old downtown neighborhoods to a high health risk due to the high pollution potential of nitrate in the water.

Abstract. The Bay of Bengal is a well-known breeding ground to some of the deadliest cyclones in history. Despite recent advancements, the complex morphology and hydrodynamics of this large delta and the associated modelling computational costs impede the storm surge forecasting in this highly vulnerable region. Here we present a proof of concept of a physically consistent and computationally efficient storm surge forecasting system tractable in real-time with limited resources. With a state-of-the-art wave-coupled hydrodynamic numerical modelling system, we forecast the recent super cyclone Amphan in real-time. From the available observations, we assessed the quality of our modelling framework. We affirmed the evidence of the key ingredients needed for an efficient, real-time surge and inundation forecast along this active and complex coastal region. This article shows the proof of the maturity of our framework for operational implementation, which can particularly improve the quality of localized forecast for effective decision-making.

This study used remote sensing techniques to identify and assess the current condition of bottomland hardwood (BLH) and swamp habitats within the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain (WSLP) hurricane storm-damage risk reduction system (HSDRRS) project area. This effort provides baseline knowledge of the location and quality of these habitats prior to the construction of the WSLP HSDRRS project. The resultant products will assist the USACE—New Orleans District (MVN) by informing ecosystem decision-making related to environmental assessments.
