Love misunderstanding in the light of theory of mind, based on Anton Chekhov’s early prose   In this article we endeavour to draw the attention to one of the most essential themes in the research on Chekhov’s literary works, being the problem of communication. For Chekhov communication is not only a simple exchange of points, but it itself becomes the matter of interest and in-depth observations. Hence, its entirely realistic – bearing in mind various errors – picture of human contacts in Chekhov’s prose, which in turn can be analysed by diverse methodologies. As a tool for observation of the misunderstandings between the heroes (in the area of love), there is the defective theory of mind employed. And a few texts from early stage of Chekhov’s career fall here under scrutiny (e.g. “Nervers’, ‘Verochka’). In these short stories, misunderstandings emerge from inaccurate reading of consciousness, emotions and feelings of others. In this way, the writer creates the real picture of communication, in which the language is only one of many phenomena determining the success in human relationships.

The paper deals with the imagination of the homeland, based on the modernistic recontextualization of the mythical-folklore pattern, in Momcilo Nastasijević’s short stories collection Hronika moje varoši and in Vidosav Stevanović’s novel Nišči. The aim of the paper is to point out the mythopoetic meanings of toponyms and microtoponyms, which form a fictional map of “impure” localities of the homeland, onto- logically autonomous in relation to the real world and imbued with special semantic layers. Considering that the space is inextricably permeated with faces and events in the analyzed literary works, the paper also deals with the relationship between spatial charac- teristics and mental, moral, biological weaknesses of the locals, due to which an aura of “evil fate” is created over the homeland.

The influence of Byron on Liszt was enormous, as is generally acknowledged. In particular the First Book of the Années de pèlerinage shows the poet’s influence in its choice of Byron epigraphs in English for four of the set of nine pieces. In his years of travel as a virtuoso pianist Liszt often referred to “mon byronisme.” The work by Byron that most affected Liszt is the long narrative poem Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage which was translated into many languages, including French. The word “pèlerinage” that replaced “voyageur” is a Byronic identity in Liszt’s thinking. The Byronic hero as Liszt saw him and imitated him in for example Mazeppa and Tasso is a figure who represented a positive force, suffering and perhaps a revolutionary, but definitely not a public enemy. Liszt’s life, viewed as a musical pilgrimage, led of course to Rome. Is it possible that Byron even influenced him in this direction? In this paper I try to give a portrait of the real Byron that hides behind the poseur of his literary works, and suggest that what drew Liszt to the English poet was precisely the man whom he sensed behind the artistic mask. Byron was not musical, but he was religious — as emerges from his life and his letters, a life which caused scandal to his English contemporaries. But today we can see that part of the youthful genius of the rebel Byron was his boldness in the face of hypocrisy and compromise — his heroism was simply to be true. In this we can see a parallel with the Liszt who left the piano and composed Christus. What look like incompatibilities are simply the connection between action and contemplation — between the journey and the goal. Byron, in fact, can help us follow the ligne intérieure which Liszt talked about in the 1830s.

The rabbinic halakhic system, with its many facets and the literary works that comprise it, reflects a new Jewish culture, almost completely distinct in its halakhic content and scope from the biblical and postbiblical culture that preceded it. By examining Jewish legislation in the area of corpse impurity as a test case, the article studies the implications of Qumranic halakhah, as a way-station between the Bible and the Mishnah, for understanding how Tannaitic halakhah developed. The impression obtained from the material reviewed in the article is that the direction of the “Tannaitic revolution” was charted, its methods set up, and its principles established, at a surprisingly early stage, before the destruction of the Second Temple, and thus at the same time that the Qumran literature was created.

A good literary work can provide information about various kinds of community life, including life related to religiosity. Literary works are closely related to religisiutas, because of that, various works appearing showing the religiosity of society, one ofwhich is the Javanese. Modern Indonesian literary works that illustrate this are thecollection of short stories from Umi Kalsum by Djamil Suherman, the lyrical prosePengakuan Pariyem by Linus Suryadi AG, and the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk byAhmad Tohari. Each of these works represents the diversity of Javanese society. Thecollection of short stories from Umi Kalsum shows the religious side of the communitycalled the santri who are so obedient in carrying out their worship. The lyrical proseof Pariyem's confession provides information on how a babu is so resigned to seeinglife, but in her soul holds the wisdom of Kejawen. Meanwhile, Ronggeng Dukuh Parukdescribes the Javanese people who worship the spirits of their ancestors. Even thoughthey have different religions, they basically want harmony. Javanese people who livein santri enjoy harmony when they live with strong Islamic values. The Javanesepeople of the Gunung Kidul area live in harmony if they are always nrimo and see lifeas it is according to its Javanese nature. A migrant camp is a ‘non-place’ where personal identity is put at risk. Music is a means of personal adaptation in camps, even if it means allowing little place for the real reasons for displacement of the very people shaping these new hybridizations of music. The present power of music in such a place is to create strong relationships, ‘shortcutting’ both narration and the longer time needed in order to create relationships. The kind of personal advantage it is for someone to be a musician is a topic surprisingly forgotten, obscured by theoretical habits of seeing music essentially as an expressive activity directed to an audience, or as being a communicative activity. Music has a performative power different from language, as a non-verbal art having a strong and direct relationship to the body. Musical interactions on the field give migrants the ability to balance their problematic situation of refugees, shaping a real present.

During the winter of 1922-1923 when she was just beginning her diplomatic career, Bolshevik activist Aleksandra Kollontai wrote two novels and several short stories that were immediately published in Russia and subsequently combined into two volumes under the titles Liubov’ pchel trudovykh and Zhenshchina na perelome. They were dismissed as mere autobiographical romances, indulging in unhealthy introspection and dangerously divorced from the “real” demands of society. At a time when Soviet Russia was facing enormous challenges connected with the reconstruction after the civil war and with the partial return to a market economy under the New Economic Policy (NEP), Kollontai's focus on domestic relationships and the status of women seemed narrow and excessively private.
