<div>A magnitude ML 4.0 earthquake struck southwest Hungary on March 7, 2019. The earthquake was reported to be felt in some 53 localities with maximum intensity V on the EMS scale. The earthquake was preceded by four foreshocks and followed by four aftershocks. The hypoDD solutions using differential travel times from waveform cross-correlation show significant improvements in event location. We were able to determine the moment tensor solutions for the main shock and one of the foreshocks and aftershocks, each representing thrust fault mechanism with a horizontal P-axis pointing towards N-NE. The obtained moment magnitudes range from Mw 1.5 to 3.8 with source radii between 100 and 500 m. The stress drop spans from 12 to 19 bars.</div><div> <div> <div> </div> </div> </div>

<p>The Santorini-Amorgos zone represents right-lateral transtensional regime from NE of Santorini to the south of Amorgos which also hosts Kolumbo submarine volcano. A total number of 1869 crustal events from 2002 to 2019 were recorded by permanent and temporal seismic networks deployed in southern Aegean. Absolute locations of these events were obtained by utilizing the probabilistic nonlinear algorithm NonLinLoc. Precise relative relocation by using double-difference algorithm with catalog and cross-correlation differential times was later performed, resulting in 1455 locations with horizontal and vertical uncertainties of less than 0.3 km. Clusters of earthquakes relocated between Naxos and Paros as well as north of Astypalaia do not coincide with any fault in the area. Similarly, the relocated crustal events across Santorini-Amorgos zone show that most of the earthquake clusters do not coincide with any of the existing faults. The distribution of Vp/Vs ratios in the area were investigated based on the P and S-wave travel times of all the events. Vp/Vs ratios in the area vary between 1.67 and 2.03 with errors less than 0.04. The highest Vp/Vs values were found to be distributed in the area between Naxos and Paros. Other areas with notably high Vp/Vs ratio are north of Santorini, Anydros, west of Amorgos, offshore area south of the easternmost tip of Amorgos, and the island of Astypalaia. These mentioned areas were also rich in seismic activities during the period of study. The high Vp/Vs ratios in the region of high seismicity signifies that these events were likely related to the migration of magmatic fluids to the surface and may not be caused by the existing faults.</p>

Οι σεισμικές ακολουθίες χαρακτηρίζονται συχνά από διακριτά μοτίβα, όπως χωρικές και χρονικές συστάδες, μονόπλευρη, αμφίπλευρη ή ακτινική μετανάστευση υποκέντρων και εξάρσεις στο ρυθμό σεισμικότητας. Αυτά εξαρτώνται από τη γεωμετρία του δικτύου ρηγμάτων, το καθεστώς τάσεων περιφερειακής κλίμακας με τοπικές ανωμαλίες εξαιτίας ανακατανομής τάσεων ύστερα από ισχυρά γεγονότα ή ασεισμικούς παράγοντες όπως ερπυσμό και διάχυση ρευστών υπό πίεση. Είναι σύνηθες στη χωρικά συσταδοποιημένη σεισμικότητα να εμφανίζονται σεισμοί με όμοιες εστιακές παραμέτρους (σμηνοσεισμοί, ή multiplets), οι οποίοι παράγουν όμοιες σεισμικές αναγραφές. Στην παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή αξιοποιείται το φαινόμενο της ομοιότητας κυματομορφών με σκοπό τη βελτίωση της χωροχρονικής κατανομής των σεισμών ενός καταλόγου, τόσο σε ποσότητα δεδομένων, μέσω μεθόδων ημιαυτόματης ανίχνευσης και εντοπισμού, όσο και σε ποιότητα, εφαρμόζοντας επαναπροσδιορισμό υψηλής ευκρίνειας με τη μέθοδο των διπλών διαφορών που ελαχιστοποιεί τις αβεβαιότητες των σχετικών υποκεντρικών θέσεων. Η προτιμώμενη μέθοδος για τη μέτρηση της ομοιότητας κυματομορφών είναι το μέγιστο της συνάρτησης ετεροσυσχέτισης στο πεδίο του χρόνου. Τα χαρακτηριστικά της εξετάζονται ως προς διάφορες παραμέτρους, όπως τα συχνοτικά φίλτρα που εφαρμόζονται, το μήκος παραθύρου και η διάρκεια της σεισμικής πηγής, καθώς και τη βέλτιστη τιμή κατωφλίου για συσταδοποίηση με σύνδεση του «πλησιέστερου γείτονα». Αναπτύχθηκε μια ημιαυτόματη μέθοδος προσδιορισμού χρόνων άφιξης, βασισμένη στην τεχνική του «ανιχνευτή συσχέτισης» που αξιοποιεί την ομοιότητα κυματομορφών σε πολλαπλούς σταθμούς. Η μέθοδος αυτή έχει τροποποιηθεί σε έναν υβριδικό αλγόριθμο που συνδυάζει την αυξημένη ανιχνευσιμότητα ενός μεμονωμένου σταθμού με έναν υψηλής ευαισθησίας αυτόματο αλγόριθμο προσδιορισμού του χρόνου άφιξης σεισμικών φάσεων, ο οποίος βασίζεται στο Κριτήριο Πληροφορίας του Akaike και σε στατιστική ανώτερης τάξεως (κύρτωση και λοξότητα). Περιγράφεται, επίσης, μία μέθοδος προσδιορισμού του μεγέθους σεισμικής ροπής μέσα από φασματική ανάλυση, με έμφαση σε τροποποιήσεις που επιτρέπουν τον υπολογισμό του σε τοπικούς μικροσεισμούς με στενό συχνοτικό εύρος και χαμηλό λόγο σήματος προς θόρυβο. Οι αλγόριθμοι που αναπτύχθηκαν επιτρέπουν τον δεκαπλασιασμό της ποσότητας σεισμών ενός σεισμικού καταλόγου και τη βελτίωση της πληρότητάς του κατά περίπου μία τάξη μεγέθους.Παρουσιάζονται διάφορες μελέτες περιπτώσεων που περιλαμβάνουν πρότυπα μετασεισμικών ακολουθιών (όπως για τους σεισμούς της Ανδραβίδας το 2008, της Κεφαλονιάς το 2014 και της Λευκάδας το 2015) καθώς και σεισμικών σμηνών (όπως στη Λίμνη Τριχωνίδα το 2007, την Οιχαλία το 2011 και την Ελίκη το 2013). Η κύρια περιοχή μελέτης είναι ο δυτικός Κορινθιακός Κόλπος, με ειδική έμφαση σε σεισμούς που καταγράφηκαν την περίοδο 2000-2007 από το τοπικό δίκτυο Corinth Rift Laboratory (CRL). Οι επαναπροσδιορισμένοι κατάλογοι, ύστερα από χωρική συσταδοποίηση και διαχωρισμό σε διαδοχικές χρονικές περιόδους, διερευνώνται μέσω πολλαπλών εγκάρσιων τομών και χωροχρονικών προβολών. Η εξέλιξη του ιστορικού των σμηνοσεισμών δίνει μία εικόνα για τον τρόπο με τον οποίο εξαπλώνεται η σεισμικότητα σε νέα τμήματα ρηγμάτων που δεν είχαν διαρρηχθεί, την προϋπάρχουσα δραστηριότητα σε περιοχές που αργότερα έδωσαν ισχυρές σεισμικές συστάδες και την επαναλαμβανόμενη σεισμικότητα σε τμήματα ρηξιγενών ζωνών. Όπου τα δεδομένα το επιτρέπουν, κατασκευάζονται σύνθετοι μηχανισμοί γένεσης για χωρικές συστάδες ή ομάδες σμηνοσεισμών που βοηθούν συμπληρωματικά στην ερμηνεία της χωρικής ανάλυσης και τον προσδιορισμό των ενεργοποιημένων ρηξιγενών δομών. Αναζητούνται μοτίβα χωροχρονικής σεισμικής μετανάστευσης που αποκαλύπτουν την πιθανή επίδραση ρευστών κατά τη διάρκεια σεισμικών σμηνών και προσδιορίζονται παράμετροι όπως η υδραυλική διαχυτικότητα και η ταχύτητα μετανάστευσης. Τέλος, εξετάζεται η συνεισφορά ασεισμικών παραγόντων μέσα από μοντέλα ETAS (Μετασεισμική Ακολουθία Σποραδικού Τύπου) που παρέχουν, επιπροσθέτως, πληροφορία για την παραγωγικότητα μετασεισμών και τον ρυθμό απόσβεσης.

Dominant strike-slip faulting and near-constant stress drop of induced earthquakes in the Kiskatinaw area, northeastern British Columbia, Canada

<p><span>An increasing number of hydraulic fracturing (HF) operations in­ low-permeable tight shales in the Kiskatinaw area, northeastern British Columbia, have been associated with M3+ earthquakes in the last decade, including a M<sub>L</sub> 4.5 on 11/30/2018 near Dawson Creek. Here, we use a catalog of 8285 events ranging from magnitude ML -0.5 to 4.5 between July 2017 and July 2020 to investigate their source parameters. We identify event families using waveform cross-correlation and event temporal correlation, and estimate the focal mechanism solutions (FMS) of the highest-magnitude event within each family using the probabilistic earthquake source inversion framework </span><span><em>Grond</em></span><span>. We also estimate FMS for events with a magnitude larger than M</span><sub><span>L</span></sub><span> 2.5 that do not belong to a family (independent events). We compile a FMS catalog using the robustly constrained solutions for the largest events, and associate all smaller earthquakes with a cross-correlation coefficient (CCC) > 0.8 with the corresponding FMS. In addition, we estimate seismic moment and static stress drop values using spectral fitting methods on both single spectra and spectral ratios, and investigate their scaling relations.</span></p><p> </p><p><span>In total, we constrain 65 FMS, of which 53 are clustered events, and the remaining 12 are independent events. An additional 4255 events have a CCC > 0.8 with one of the constrained FMS and are listed accordingly in the catalog. Of the total 4320 FMS, 93% are strike-slip events with one nodal plane at low angles to S</span><sub><span>H</span></sub><span>, 3% are dominantly strike-slip with thrust-faulting components, and the remaining 4% have a dominantly thrust-faulting mechanisms perpendicular to S</span><sub><span>H. </span></sub><span> The thrust-style events comprise the relatively larger magnitudes contained in the catalog, and may indicate slip on pre-existing faults. Most strike-slip events are part of an event family with multiple matching waveforms, while most thrust-faulting events are isolated with a low number of matching waveforms. </span></p><p> </p><p><span>We fit the spectral corner frequency of 2360 P-phases and 1981 S-phases using single spectra estimates, and 1031 P-phases and 919 S-phases using the spectral ratios. While results from spectral ratios suggest a roughly constant stress drop of ~1 MPa for all magnitudes, the constant stress drop trend from single spectrum fitting breaks down at magnitudes smaller ~ M</span><sub><span>L</span></sub><span> 2.0, as has commonly been observed for events recorded by surface stations. We do not observe significant dependence of stress-drop values with the faulting style, nor with event depth. </span></p>
