The rust fungi (Pucciniales) with 7000+ species comprise one of the largest orders of Fungi, and one for which taxonomy at all ranks remains problematic. Here we provide a taxonomic framework, based on 16 years of sampling that includes ca. 80 % of accepted genera including type species wherever possible, and three DNA loci used to resolve the deeper nodes of the rust fungus tree of life. Pucciniales are comprised of seven suborders – Araucariomycetineae subord. nov., Melampsorineae, Mikronegeriineae, Raveneliineae subord. nov., Rogerpetersoniineae subord. nov., Skierkineae subord. nov., and Uredinineae – and 18 families – Araucariomycetaceae fam. nov., Coleosporiaceae, Crossopsoraceae fam. nov., Gymnosporangiaceae, Melampsoraceae, Milesinaceae fam. nov., Ochropsoraceae fam. & stat. nov., Phakopsoraceae, Phragmidiaceae, Pileolariaceae, Pucciniaceae, Pucciniastraceae, Raveneliaceae, Rogerpetersoniaceae fam. nov., Skierkaceae fam. & stat. nov., Sphaerophragmiaceae, Tranzscheliaceae fam. & stat. nov., and Zaghouaniaceae. The new genera Araucariomyces (for Aecidium fragiforme and Ae. balansae), Neoolivea (for Olivea tectonae), Rogerpetersonia (for Caeoma torreyae), and Rossmanomyces (for Chrysomyxa monesis, Ch. pryrolae, and Ch. ramischiae) are proposed. Twenty-one new combinations and one new name are introduced for: Angiopsora apoda, Angiopsora chusqueae, Angiopsora paspalicola, Araucariomyces balansae, Araucariomyces fragiformis, Cephalotelium evansii, Cephalotelium neocaledoniense, Cephalotelium xanthophloeae, Ceropsora weirii, Gymnotelium speciosum, Lipocystis acaciae-pennatulae, Neoolivea tectonae, Neophysopella kraunhiae, Phakopsora pipturi, Rogerpetersonia torreyae, Rossmanomyces monesis, Rossmanomyces pryrolae, Rossmanomyces ramischiae, Thekopsora americana, Thekopsora potentillae, Thekopsora pseudoagrimoniae, and Zaghouania notelaeae. Higher ranks are newly defined with consideration of morphology, host range and life cycle. Finally, we discuss the evolutionary and diversification trends within Pucciniales.

AbstractThe following new genera and species are described: Glyphodes militaris n. sp., Borneo; Gypodes n. gen., type-species G. vexilliferalis n. sp., South America; Nagiella hortulatoides n. sp., Burma; Laniipriva n. gen., type-species L. antobliqua n. sp., Venezuela; Scaptesylodes n. gen., type-species Scaptesyle(?) incerta Semper, Philippine Is., and also including Scaptesylodes modica n. sp., Malaysia and Sumatra. Nagiella is proposed as a new name for Nagia Walker, 1866, not Walker, 1858. Nagia desmialis Walker, 1866, is the type-species of both nominal genera; Scopula quadrimaculalis Kollar, 1844, and Sylepta inferior Hampson, 1898, are referred to Nagiella as new combinations. The genus is differentiated from Pleuroptya Meyrick, 1890, and Haritalodes Warren, 1890.

ABSTRACTThe ascaridoid nematodes with more than two uterine branches, which occur in snakes and lizards, are grouped into three genera: (1) Polydelphis (without interlabia, with four uterine branches) containing the type species, P. anoura, occuring in Old World Pythons, with P. brachycheilos as a species dubium. (2) Travassosascaris, a new genus with interlabia and with four uterine branches, with type species T. araujoi (new name for P. quadrangularis (Schneider) of Araujo, 1969) occuring in New World rattlesnakes. (3) Hexametra, (without interlabia, with six uterine branches) containing species in lizards and snakes. In lizards, H. hexametra (type species), H. applanata, H.angusticaecoides and H. rotundicaudata are tentatively differentiated. In snakes, two Hexametra species are tentatively differentiated: (1) H. boddaertii (with three synonyms) in New World pit vipers and colubrids; (2) H. quadricornis (with twenty-two synonyms) in Old World viperids, elapids and colubrids. The morphology, host range, geographical distribution, development and harmful effects of these species are discussed.

The Prabhasa Moore, 1878 genus-group is reviewed. The male and female genitalia of Prabhasa venosa Moore, 1878, the type species of the genus, are described and illustrated for the first time. Two new genera, Macohasa Dubatolov, Volynkin & Kishida, gen. nov. and Chinasa Dubatolov, Volynkin & Kishida, gen. nov. and two new species, Macohasa cernyi Dubatolov, Volynkin & Kishida, sp. nov. and Chinasa sapa Dubatolov, Volynkin & Kishida, sp. nov. are described for Prabhasa venosa sensu authors. Seven new combinations are established: Zadadra plumbeomicans (Hampson, 1894), comb. nov., Zadadra monastyrskyi (Dubatolov, 2012), comb. nov., Macohasa orientalis (Hampson, 1905), comb. nov., Macohasa tetraspila (Černý, 2009), comb. nov., Macohasa dimorpha (Hampson, 1918), comb. nov., Chinasa costalis costalis (Moore, 1878), comb. nov. and Chinasa costalis bicoloriceps (Strand, 1916), comb. nov.

A synthesis of the present knowledge of the Spanish Peritelini is presented. Two new genera are separated from Peritelus auctt.: Euplister (type species: Peritelus susanae Seidlitz, 1866) and Pseudoperitelus (type species: Peritelus globulicollis Seidlitz, 1862). Thirteen new species are described from Spain: Meira gerundana, M. medae, M. tarraconensis, Pseudomeira baetica, P. eremita, P. lepida, Euplister andalusicus, E. frater, E. megalophthalmus, E. mimus, E. moroderi, E. trifolii, E. velazquezi. New combinations are: Euplister susanae (Seidlitz, 1866), E. hybridus (Seidlitz, 1871), E. setabensis (Hustache, 1921), E. magnicollis (Desbrochers, 1896), E. coniceps (Desbrochers, 1897), Pseudoperitelus senex (Boheman, 1834), P. globulicollis (Seidlitz, 1871), P. espanoli (Roudier, 1958) and P. lopezi (Hoffmann, 1961), and one new synonym is proposed: Simo cremieri (Boheman, 1842) = Peritelus maroccanus Pic, 1920, syn. n. One genus, Meira Jacquelin du Val, 1853, and two species, Gymnomorphus nigrans (Fairmaire, 1862) and Meirella florentina (Stierlin, 1884), are newly recorded from Spain, bringing the total number of Peritelini known from Iberia to ten genera and thirtysix species. Diagnoses, detailed descriptions and data on distribution and ecology, mostly unpublished, are provided for each species, and a catalogue, identification keys, distribution maps and figures of key anatomical characters are added for the Iberian species. Caenopsis Bach, 1854 is excluded from Peritelini and confirmed as belonging in Trachyphloeini.

The genus Aglaotilla Brothers, gen. nov., is described for 14 striking species of Australian Mutillidae related to Ephutomorpha André, 1902, characterized by bright metallic coloration and strong punctation. The description of both sexes is possible through sex associations revealed by rearings from mud nests and trap nests. Both sexes of the type species, Ephutomorpha submetallescens Turner, 1916, are described and illustrated, the male for the first time. New combinations and a new name are proposed, as follows: Aglaotilla aeruginosa (Smith, 1879), comb. nov. (from Mutilla); A. australis (André, 1898), comb. nov. The life cycle connection between spermogonial and aecial stages of a rust fungus found on Abies holophylla and uredinial and telial stages on Tilia mongolica and T. mandshurica collected in northeast China were confirmed by phylogenetic analyses. The rust, identified as Pucciniastrum tiliae, was confirmed by morphological observations. The life cycle of this rust fungus is reported for the first time in China, and A. holophylla and T. mongolica represent new host plants for the species.

Two genera of Lathrobiina are described, illustrated, and distinguished from Lathrobium Gravenhorst, 1802 and allied genera: Elytrobium gen. n. (type species: Lathrobium monilicorne Sharp, 1889) and Sinlathrobium gen. n. (type species: Lathrobium lobrathiforme Assing, 2012). Elytrobium is distributed in the southeast of the East Palaearctic region and includes six species: E. monilicorne (Sharp, 1889), comb. n. (Japan); E. gongganum sp. n. (China: Gongga Shan); E. qinlinganum sp. n. (China: Qinling Shan); E. seminitidum sp. n. (China: Shaanxi); E. scindens sp. n. (China: Daba Shan); E. alesianum sp. n. (Taiwan). Sinlathrobium comprises four species from China: S. lobrathiforme (Assing, 2012), comb. n. (Yunnan); S. lobrathioides (Assing, 2012), comb. n. (transferred from Lathrobium) (Chongqing); S. densepunctatum sp. n. (Sichuan); S. iniquum sp. n. (Yunnan). Keys to the species of both genera are provided, and their distributions are mapped. Although all the species of both genera appear to be fully winged, four of the six Elytrobium and all the Sinlathrobium species have been recorded from only a single locality each. Three new genera and five new species of Tephritidae (Diptera) are described from the Nearctic and Neotropical Regions. The new genera are: Agallamyia Norrbom (type species: A. pendula Norrbom, n. sp.), Neosphaeniscus Norrbom (type species: Euribia m-nigrum Hendel), and Phacelochaeta Norrbom (type species: Procecidochares quinquefasciata Hendel). Six new genera are erected in the subtribe Thioniina of the tribe Issini to accommodate seven American species of the family Issidae, six of which were described by L. Melichar and E. Schmidt in early 20th century from Bolivia, Brazil, Mexico, and Peru, and one new species is described from Paraguay as follows: Carimeta gen. nov. (type species: Carimeta maculipennis sp. nov.); Metopasius gen. nov. (type species: Thionia proxima Melichar, 1906); Cophteroma gen. nov. (type species: Thionia truncatella Melichar, 1906); Cyclometa gen. nov. (type species: Thionia bifasciatifrons Melichar, 1906); Memusta gen. nov. (type species: Thionia obtusa Melichar, 1906); Thiopara gen. nov. (type species: Thionia fusca Melichar, 1906). Thionia sinuata Schmidt, 1910 is transferred to the genus Carimeta gen. nov. Six new combinations are formed: Carimeta sinuata (Schmidt, 1910), comb. nov.; Metopasius proximus (Melichar, 1906), comb. nov.; Cophteroma truncatella (Melichar, 1906), comb. nov.; Cyclometa bifasciatifrons (Melichar, 1906), comb. nov.; Memusta obtusa (Melichar, 1906), comb. nov.; Thiopara fusca (Melichar, 1906), comb. nov. The lectotypes are designated for Thionia fusca Melichar, T. proxima Melichar, and T. sinuata Schmidt to stabilize the nomenclature in the studied group according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. New record for Cyclometa bifasciatifrons from Brasil is provided. Photographs of the type specimens with original labels including Melichar’s and Schmidt’s autographs as well as drawings of all studied species are given.

The pygmy grasshopper subfamily Batrachideinae consists of three tribes: Batrachideini Bolívar, 1887; Cassitettigini Yin, 1984, nom. resurr.; Bufonidini Hancock, 1907, nom. resurr., stat. nov. The Australian pygmy grasshoppers of the tribe Bufonidini are reviewed. Three new genera are described, namely Paraselina gen. nov. (type species Vingselina multifora Rehn, 1952), Anaselina gen. nov. (type species Vingselina minor Sjöstedt, 1921), and Selivinga gen. nov. (type species Selivinga tribulata sp. nov.). Four new combinations are proposed: Paraselina multifora (Rehn, 1952), comb. nov.; P. trituberculata (Sjöstedt, 1932), comb. nov.; P. brunneri (Bolívar, 1887), comb. nov.; Anaselina minor (Sjöstedt, 1921), comb. nov. A key to Australian genera of Batrachideinae is provided.
