Abstract Kokowska-Pawłowska, M. and Nowak, J. 2013. Phosphorus minerals in tonstein; coal seam 405 at Sośnica- Makoszowy coal mine, Upper Silesia, southern Poland. Acta Geologica Polonica, 63 (2), 271-281. Warszawa. The paper presents results of research on tonstein, which constitutes an interburden in coal seam 405 at the Sośnica- Makoszowy coal mine, Makoszowy field (mining level 600 m), Upper Silesia, southern Poland. The mineral and chemical compositions of the tonstein differ from the typical compositions described earlier for tonsteins from Upper Silesia Coal Basin area. Additionally, minerals present in the tonsteins include kaolinite, quartz, kaolinitised biotite and feldspars. The presence of the phosphatic minerals apatite and goyazite has been recognized. The presence of gorceixite and crandallite is also possible. The contents of CaO (5.66 wt%) and P2O5 (6.2 wt%) are remarkably high. Analysis of selected trace elements demonstrated high contents of Sr (4937 ppm) and Ba (4300 ppm), related to the phosphatic minerals. On the basis of mineral composition the tonstein has been identified as a crystalline tonstein, transitional to a multiplied one.

AbstractBased on analysis of a large data set and supplementary sampling and analysis for hazardous trace elements in coal samples from the Huainan Coalfield, a generalized contrast-weighted scale index method was used to establish a model to evaluate the grade of coal cleanliness and its regional distribution in the main coal seam (No. 13-1) The results showed that: (1) The contents of Cr, Mn and Ni in the coal seam are relatively high and the average values are greater than 20 μg/g. The contents of Se and Hg are at a high level while most other trace elements are at normal levels. (2) The cleanliness grade of the coal seam is mainly grade III–IV, which corresponds to a relatively good-medium coal cleanliness grade. However, some parts of the seam are at grade V (relatively poor coal cleanliness). (3) Coal of relatively good cleanliness grade (grade III) is distributed mainly in the regions corresponding to the Zhuji-Dingji-Gubei coal mines and in the eastern periphery of the Panji coal mine. Coal of medium cleanliness (grade IV) is distributed mainly in the regions of the Panji-Xiejiaji and Kouzidong coalmines. Relatively poor grade coal (grade V) is distributed in the southwest regions of the coalfield and the contents of Cr, As and Hg in coal collected from the relatively poor coal cleanliness regions often exceed the regulatory standards for the maximum concentration limits.

In northern Vietnam, the Tien Hai area is considered a high potential area of coal deposits. Twohundred fifty-six geochemical coal samples of 13 cores in the Tien Hai area investigate coal seams andcoal deposits to identify the correlation of coal seams. According to the statistical method and clusteranalysis of geochemical samples, the results indicate that the Mg, V, As, Ca, Zn, Cr, Co, K, Na, Sr, Fe,Ge, Re, U, Mo, Th, and Ga elements are good indicator elements of the major and trace elements in coal. Most of them comply with the normal or lognormal distribution rules. Besides, the Yb, Sc, Ho, Er, Tm,Lu, Y, Tb, Pr, Dy, and Sm elements are also good indicator elements for rare earth elements in the region. Therefore, the selected elements are used to identify the correlation of the coal seams in the Tien Hai area.Based on the similarity degree between studied objects, the results of grouping boreholes in coal seamsshow that the correlation of coal seam TV2-11 is suitable and acceptable, the coal seams TV3-6a, TV3-6b, and TV3-6c can be grouped into the coal seam TV3-6. These results present that the models can helpstudy geochemical coal samples and identify the correlation of the coal seams in the Tien Hai area.Additionally, the statistical analysis shows a remarkable degree to determine the correlation of the coalseams. Geochemical coal data can help to evaluate the indicator elements of the major, trace elements, and rare earth elements in coal seams and coal rashing of adjoining and pillar rocks in the Tien Hai area, northern Vietnam.

This research presents the grouting method of preventing rib sloughage which severely impacts mine safety and longwall retreat speed in thick coal seam with numerical simulation and laboratory tests. Based on the analysis of the plastic failure mode of five types of coal seam, roof strata ahead of the longwall face, and fractures developed in the coal seam, the following results are drawn, the range and degree of plastic failure generated in the coal seam and roof strata ahead of the longwall face gradually decreased as the coal mass strength increased; the grouting boreholes are essentially laid out within the coal rib instead of the roof. For a particular case of a coal mine in Shanxi province, a novel cement-based material was grouted, which fulfilled the reinforcement requirements under the tectonic stress regions and front abutment zones. Besides, the grouting borehole construction requested predrilled boreholes, full borehole intubation, lengthened hole sealing, and multiple-step drilling and grouting. This study can provide a theoretical framework of a design overview and practical basis for similar mining conditions in other coalfields.

AbstractThe petrographical and geochemical characteristics of some basic sills and dykes from Southern Rhenish Schiefergebirge are described. The dykes are generally more altered than the sills and are classified into two types according to their relation to the lead-zinc veins found in the area. The distribution of some trace elements in the sills and dykes is given and the nature and mechanism of alteration are discussed.
