The article is devoted to the study of biological characteristics of the north Caspian roach of the Daghestan coast of the Caspian Sea. Discussed are size and weight, fatness, passing the stage of gonad maturity, the absolute individual fecundity and feeding habits. The degree of occurrence of organisms in the food lumps with identification of dominant groups is determined.

The offshore zone of the western coast of the Caspian Sea is one of the most highly productive. Of the 63 species of fish that live in the Caspian Sea, 34 species are found on the Krainovsky coast, 42 % of which are carp. The most numerous is the roach Rutilus rutilus caspicus (Jakowlev, 1870), which makes up 50–86 % of the number of semi-passerine and river fish. The article presents the results of studies of the peculiarities of the biology of the roach Rutilus rutilus caspicus of the Krainovsky coast of the Caspian Sea. The roach is noted in the catches constantly. Her age in the networks ranges from 2 to 10 years. The share of 3-5-year-olds accounts for 81 %. Females in catches make up 66 %, males - 34 %. The parameters of the Bertalanfi equation are characterized by the following values: L =38.8 cm, K = 0.12, t° = -2.67. The fecundity of the roach on average is 30.2 thousand eggs and tends to increase with increasing length and weight of the fish. As the roach grows, the composition of its food changes significantly. The maximum fed roach length from 10 to 20 cm.

The work presents microstructural analysis of the oocytes of the common carp and the caspian roach that are on the stages of the protoplasmic and trophoplasmic (large) growth of the germ cells. Seasonal changes of quantitative and qualitative transformations of structural components of oocytes are also given. It is shown that from the early spring to the late autumn in the ovaries of the caspian roach and the common carp found are the oocytes of different generations, which are both at the generative and vegetative stages of growth of germ cells and along with this can occur, with varying intensity, resorption of whole oocytes and their individual structures. It has been established that spawning is common in the common carp, generative and regenerative processes occur simultaneously, while in the wobble spawning is simultaneous, the generative processes begin only after the regeneration of the sexual gland.

The article presents the results of studies of feeding characteristics of such cyprinid fish species as the roach Rutilus rutilus caspius (Jakowlev, 1870) and the bream Abramis brama (Linnaeus, 1758) in various parts of the Daghestan coast of the Caspian Sea. The material was sampled along the entire Daghestan coast of the Caspian Sea, from the Kizlyar Bay to the mouth of the Samur river, in different biological seasons in the period of 2017–2018.

The article presents analyzes of the influence of long-term see breathing on roach catches. There were studied relations of these indicators within 1959-1976 (low sea-level), 1977-1994 (sea water rise from the minimum to maximum level), 1995-2016 (maximum sea-level falling to modern range). The analysis of longstanding dynamics of roach catches showed the relation with the sea-level fluctuations, under the influence of which bio-productivity of the Caspian Sea is forming. For analysis of the influence of environment conditions on roach catches there was taken the time period of 1975-1988. The results showed the inverse relationship, whereby catches decreased with the increase of flooding. This could happen due to high volumes of water entering the river Delta and preventing from catching fish (depths are increasing, fishing grounds are flooded and fishing ceases). The study shows that the major factors influencing the conditions of the roach fishing are the temperature regime of watercourses in the spring period and the terms of the flooding. In the years of early warming up the water roach came earlier to fishing areas, which created more favorable conditions for fishing. Under the late warming up of the water roach mass run shifted to later periods, when, according to the Rules of the fishery, it is prohibited to use fine-mashed seines. When the terms of the water warming-up to spawning temperatures coincided with the terms of the flooding, roach entered spawning grounds and didn’t stay long in the river, thus its concentrations in the fishing zones took a comparatively short time.

The article presents the comparative analysis of quantity and the distribution of Caspian roach, bream and pike perch underyearlings in western part of the northern Caspian in the current context of the Volga river high water and low-water run-off in 2013-2016. It has been shown that, depending on conditions of each year, the quantity of the three species underyearlings varies too much. The biggest number of Caspian roach and bream in the period under review was observed in 2013 and 2016, and the biggest pike perch quantity - in 2016. In spite of certain variability, the quantity of Caspian roach and pike perch underyearlings stays low today. Bream quantity in some years increased up to the level of middle yielding generations. In spite of low quantity, Caspian roach underyearlings almost completely developed feeding territories of western part of the north Caspian in both high water and in low-water years. The foraging area of bream and especially of pike perch underyearlings is smaller than Caspian roach one. They spread to the maximum upon the water area of the Caspian Sea in 2016, that year was the most favorable in salinity for generative freshwater fish for the last few years. Caspian roach underyearlings generally gained weight in waters with salinity over 8‰, bream - in desalinated areas with salinity up to 5‰. Pike perch underyearlings stayed in desalinated areas during the high water years; they were found across the studied spectrum with low (0-5‰), high (>10‰) and moderate water salinity (5-8‰) during the low-water years.

Abstract. The lengths of the coastlines in Ptolemy's Geography are compared with the corresponding values transmitted by other ancient sources, presumably based on some lost periploi (literally "voyages around or circumnavigations", a genre of ancient geographical literature describing coastal itineraries). The comparison reveals a remarkable agreement between them, suggesting that Ptolemy relied much more heavily on these or similar periploi than it used to be thought. Additionally, a possible impact of Ptolemy's erroneous estimate of the circumference of the Earth is investigated. It is argued that this error resulted in two interrelated distortions of the coastal outlines in Ptolemy's Geography. First, the north–south stretches of the coast that were tied to particular latitudes are shown compressed relative to the distances recorded in other sources in roughly the same proportion to which Ptolemy's circumference of the Earth is underestimated relative to the true value. Second, in several cases this compression is compensated by a proportional stretching of the adjacent east–west coastal segments. In particular, these findings suggest a simple explanation for the strange shape of the Caspian Sea in Ptolemy's Geography.

Azerbaijan is a nation with a Turkic population which regained its independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. It has an area of approximately 86 000 km2. Georgia and Armenia, the other countries comprising the Transcaucasian region, border Azerbaijan to the north and west, respectively. Russia also borders the north, Iran and Turkey the south, and the Caspian Sea borders the east. The total population is about 8 million. The largest ethnic group is Azeri, comprising 90% of the population; Dagestanis comprise 3.2%, Russians 2.5%, Armenians 2% and others 2.3%.
