This study is an application and specialization of the Bayesian linear model developed by Lindley and Smith (1972). The context is m-group regression and the application to the prediction of grade point average. The specialization involves the assumption of homogeneity of regression coefficients (but not intercepts) across groups. Empirical cross-validations are conducted to compare the predictive efficiency of this model with that of the full m-group regression and several least squares methods in the context of educational selection.

In this present paper, considering a linear regression model with nonspherical disturbances, improved confidence sets for the regression coefficients vector are developed using the Stein rule estimators. We derive the large-sample approximations for the coverage probabilities and the expected volumes of the confidence sets based on the feasible generalized least-squares estimator and the Stein rule estimator and discuss their ranking.

This paper reports on the influence of waiving the GMAT requirement on academic performance as measured by grade-point-average at graduation for 833 University of Hartford MBA students who graduated between 2003 and 2009. In seeking to better understand what factors might be influencing graduation GPA, we examined a variety of traditional attributes. In addition, we examined the potential influence of GMAT Waivers on graduation GPA because there was some thought that students who waived this test might have lower graduation GPAs than those who took the examination. The results of this study indicated that the most important factor for determining MBA graduation GPA was an individual’s undergraduate GPA, with higher undergraduate GPAs being associated with higher MBA graduation GPAs. Marginally significant differences in graduation GPA were also found based on the number of credits waived at entry into the MBA program, with more credits being waived contributing to a higher graduation GPA. We also found that women graduated with higher GPAs than men. Of particular interest to us in this study, however, was whether or not our GMAT Waiver policy was influencing graduation GPAs. In this case, we found no significant difference in graduation GPA, regardless of whether or not the GMAT requirement was waived. These results were confirmed using chi-square tests and two-sample t-tests. To gain additional insights into these issues, we estimated a regression model to explain graduation GPA using several attributes as independent variables. The regression results indicate that undergraduate GPA and gender seemed to most reliably predict differences in graduation GPA.

Mastery behaviours — seeking out challenging tasks and continuing to work on them despite difficulties — are integral to achievement but difficult to measure with precision. The current study reports on the development and validation of the computer-based persistence, effort, resilience, and challenge-seeking (PERC) task in two demographically diverse samples of adolescents (total N = 3,188). We present evidence for convergent validity with self-reported mastery behaviours and learning mindsets, discriminant validity from theoretically unrelated constructs, and incremental predictive validity for grade point average (GPA). Results suggest that the PERC task may be a useful tool for assessing mastery behaviours at scale.

AbstractIn this work, we consider the general linear model or its variants with the ordinary least squares, generalised least squares or restricted least squares estimators of the regression coefficients and variance. We propose a newly unified set of definitions for local sensitivity for both situations, one for the estimators of the regression coefficients, and the other for the estimators of the variance. Based on these definitions, we present the estimators’ sensitivity results. We include brief remarks on possible links of these definitions and sensitivity results to local influence and other existing results.

University dropout is a politically and economically important factor. While a number of studies address this issue cross-sectionally by analyzing different cohorts, or retrospectively via questionnaires, few of them are truly longitudinal and focus on the individual as the unit of interest. In contrast to these studies, an individual differences perspective is adopted in the present paper. For this purpose, a hands-on introduction to a recently proposed structural equation (SEM) approach to discrete-time survival analysis is provided ( Muthén & Masyn, 2005 ). In a next step, a prospective study with N = 1096 students, observed across four semesters, is introduced. As expected, average university grade proved to be an important predictor of future dropout, while high-school grade-point average (GPA) yielded no incremental predictive validity but was completely mediated by university grade. Accounting for unobserved heterogeneity, three latent classes could be identified with differential predictor-criterion relations, suggesting the need to pay closer attention to the composition of the student population.

Basic competence used during counseling session is the development of trained skills and experienced obtained by counselor candidate during their education. To obtain the skills the counselors have to seriously pass some training phases. This study is aimed at finding out the basic competence possessed by counselor candidate during counseling session in Faculty of Education and Teachers Training in Islamic University of Raden Intan Lampung. This research applied quantitative method, involving 145 of final year students who were randomly selected. Data was collected by distributing the questionnaire of counseling basic competence and analyzed by using descriptive statistic aided by Statistics Package for Social Science (SPSS version 22.0). Generally the findings of the study reveals that the counseling basic competence possessed by the counselor candidates is placed on Average/Simple level. The study also shows that there is no difference competence pursuant to gender and Grade Point Average (GPA) achieved by the object of the study. It implies that the basic competence in conducting counseling session is extremely important and prominent prossesed by the counselors in schools.
