Polyamide 66 (PA66)/poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether) (PPE) blends with a ratio of 50/50 (w/w) were produced by a twin-screw compounder. The immiscible blends were compatibilized using two different styrene–maleic anhydride copolymers (SMA) with a low (SMAlow) and a high (SMAhigh) maleic anhydride (MA) concentration of 8 and 25 wt%, respectively. Furthermore, the SMA content was varied from 0 to 10 wt%. The influence of MA concentration and SMA content on the morphological and thermomechanical properties of PA66/PPE blends was investigated. Herein, we established correlations between the interfacial activity of the SMA with blend morphology and corresponding tensile properties. A droplet-sea to co-continuous morphology transition was shown by scanning electron microscopy to occur between 1.25 and 5 wt% in the case of SMAhigh. For SMAlow, the transition started from 7.5 wt% and was still ongoing at 10 wt%. It was found that SMAlow with 10 wt% content enhanced the tensile strength (10%) and elongation at break (70%) of PA66/PPE blends. This improvement can be explained by the strong interfacial interaction of SMAlow within the blend system, which features the formation of nanoemulsion morphology, as shown by transmission electron microscopy. Very small interdomain distances hinder matrix deformations, which forces debonding and cohesive failure of the PPE phase as a “weaker” main deformation mechanism. Due to a lack of interfacial activity, the mechanical properties of the blends with SMAhigh were not improved.

Abstract A mechanism to improve the toughness of phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin for wood composites is investigated. It is hypothesized that addition of maleic anhydride polyolefins (MAPO), namely maleic anhydride polypropylene (MAPP) and maleic anhydride polyethylene (MAPE), to PF resin will toughen it owing to phase separation between the resin and MAPO. Dynamic mechanical analysis of resin with a low level of MAPP (0.5%) showed an improvement in the storage modulus (E′) or stiffness of the resin system during curing. Similarly, the damping property, tanδ, examined at three discrete temperatures, improved with blends of low levels of MAPP (0.5%). The fracture energies (GIc and GIa) at 12% moisture content were increased with the addition of MAPP at lower proportions (1.5%, 3%, and 4.5%); whereas the addition of MAPE showed a reduction in fracture energies, although not significant, particularly at lower levels. After 24 h soaking, specimens with MAPP showed significant improvements in GIc only at the 3% level; however, addition of MAPE resulted in a reduction of both the fracture energies. On the basis of these results, PF resin was blended with MAPP anionic emulsion for fabrication of oriented strand composites (OSC) test boards in Part 2 of the study.

The paper presents the results of a study of the thermodefomational characteristics of dynamically vulcanized thermoplastic elastomers based on random polypropylene and nitrile butadiene rubber (SKN). In order to improve the compatibility of polymer mixtures, Exxelor PO1200, a grafted copolymer of polypropylene with maleic anhydride, was used as a compatibilizer. The concentration of maleic anhydride in the composition of the grafted copolymer was 3.0 wt. %. It was shown that as a result of the loading of the compatibilizer, it seemed possible to improve the compatibility of bipolar mixtures, in which there was no separation between the components of the mixture. It was found that with the load of 30 wt. % SKN-18, as well as 40 wt. % SKN-26 or SKN-40 into the composition of random polypropylene, the polymer composition exhibits the properties of thermoplastic elastomers, as a result of which plastic deformation is replaced by a highly elastic characteristic for rubbers. The temperature regions of the solid, highly elastic, and viscous flowing states are determined. In order to give polymer blends greater elasticity, they were vulcanized using crosslinking agents such as dicumyl peroxide and sulfur. It is shown how, in the process of increasing the concentration of dicumyl peroxide from 0.25 to 1.0 wt. %, the thermomechanical properties of dynamically vulcanized thermoplastic elastomers significantly change. It was found that with the introduction of dicumyl peroxide in an amount equal to 1.0 wt. %, the melt flowability of vulcanized materials almost completely lose their ability to flow, and pass from a highly elastic state to a glassy one. With the load of sulfur in an amount of 1.0 to 10 wt. %, the melt flowability of the vulcanized thermoplastic elastomers is preserved.
