CONDITIONS OF KAME FORMATION NEAR VILLAGE OF MASHIV (VOLHYNIAN POLISSIA)

Kames located in the Volhynian Polissya remain the most widespread and the least studied type of relict glacial landform. The article is focused on the specific conditions of kames creation within the peripheral parts of the Volhynian Polissya glacial bed elevation and their significant role in the formation of fissure net in the zones of deadened ice compression inherited from the stages of their inactivity. These compression zones were predetermined by the general planned configuration of the glacial bed landform climaxes. The presented reservoir is located to the north of the village of Mashiv and belongs to a complex of similar glacial accumulations crowed at the culmination of pre-glacial relief and placed at a considerable distance from the marginal formations of the maximum stage of the Dnieper glaciation. The morphological and geological structure of the form is analyzed to explain the conditions of its formation. It is revealed that its structure is dominated by fine-grained sediments; textural and structural features of them allow distinguishing two lithofacial complexes. The basis of the form is loamy sandy and sandy lake-ice deposits covered by a complex of fine-medium-grained sandy fluvioglacial sediments. The morphology of the form, its correlation with the elements of buried pre-glacial relief and the textural peculiarities of the described section deposits, allow to state that the accumulation of the material occurred within a semi-flowing or stagnant during certain periods basin filled with sediments of a small convey water-glacial outcasts; they were accumulated by activity of low energy melt water flows within the peripheral part of the ice glade. The glade was formed on the fracture zone line of the inactive (dead) ice, laid above the glacial bed landform climaxes. The textural and structural features of the form give reason to identify it as kame. This work is an attempt to explain the morphology and geological structure of glacial forms located within the frontal area of the first post maximal stage of Dnipro Glaciation near Zalissia (Volyn Polissia). We tried to explain their origin and conditions of formation. The research included morphological and morphometric methods and method of lithofacies analysis. Presented kames form isolated and semi-isolated hills. They mostly have an irregular shape, slightly elongated, subparallel of the ice frontal zones. The geological structure of the forms was studied in a large sand quarry and in several unrepresentative small outcrops of anthropogenic origin. They are located near the village of Zalissia. This research revealed that fine-grained sediments dominate in the geological structure of these forms. Texture and lithological features of the deposits of Zalissia section helped to identify a few lithofacies complexes in their composition. Thin horizontally layered glaciolacustrine sediments are lying at the base of the form. They are covered with the unsorted detrital deposits (diamicton). Mainly fine and middle sandy deposits of the fluvioglacial complex occur higher in the section. They are rhythmically constructed. Geological structure of section is finished by a layer of unsorted gravel and pebble ablative deposits with mainly sandy filler. Texture features of the deposits of this section make it possible to conclude that their accumulation took place in zones of increased fracture in the body of inactive, dead ice. Sedimentation was carried out in conditions of low-energy glaciofluvial streams and stagnant basins, occasionally interrupted by the accumulation of ablation masses. Such a combination of different deposits may indicate that the formation of this form could take place in the deepenings on the surface of the ice, possibly in large thawed patches, which reached the glacial bed. The thawed patches lay on the intersections of large cracks. The formation of cracks is a consequence of the uneven block movement of the ice masses in front of the barrier in the form of glacial bed elevation. Cracks had a constant tendency to expand as a result of increased ablation processes. These forms are identified as kames based on the detected sedimentological features. Sedimentary rocks of the Upper Cretaceous basal series found at the village of Planinica, Western Serbia, are composed of thick coarse clastics and beds and intercalations of medium- to fine-grained clastics. The series lies transgressively over Jurassic serpentinite and peridotite, and under Upper Miocene marlstone and marly limestone. Sedimentary, petrographic, paleontological, and biostratigraphic characteristics of the basal series are described and its lithological members and their structural features are identified. From medium-grained sandy matrix in thick coarse clastics, two ammonite taxa, four brachiopod taxa (including the new taxa Orbirhynchia oweni and "Terebratula" n. gen. et sp.), and eleven echinoid taxa are described. The brachiopod species Kingena concinna Owen is used in dating the basal series as Middle Cenomanian, whereas limestone fragments in coarse clastics correspond to the Late Albian and Early Cenomanian.

During the war a large new quarry was opened in the Longmyndian rocks of Haughmond Hill, Shropshire. It is near the south-east edge of the hill, to the west of the road running north from Upton Magna and one mile from the village. On the sketch-map in the Shrewsbury Memoir (p. 58) two arrows are shown, at about this locality, recording dips of 50° in a south-easterly direction. I was told that there was a very small quarry here before the large quarry was excavated. The present quarry is even larger than that near Haughmond Abbey (Shrewsbury Memoir, p. 48), on the north-west side of the Pre-Cambrian outcrop, and the two quarries offer extensive and splendidly displayed exposures of Longmyndian rocks, one in the coarse-grained Western Longmyndian and the other in the fine-grained Eastern Longmyndian.

One of the results of the educational reform of the 1860s was the formation of the regular personnel of village teachers. In Vilna educational district the goal was not to invite teachers from central Russia, but to train them on the spot by establishing special seminaries. Trained teachers were supposed to perform the role of «cultural brokers» – the intermediaries between local peasants and the outside world, between the culture of Russian intelligentsia and the culture of the Belarusian people. The article examines how officials and teachers of Vilna educational district saw the role of rural teachers as «cultural brokers» in the context of the linguistic and cultural diversity of the North-Western Provinces. According to them, the graduates of the pedagogical seminaries had to remain within the peasant estate and to keep in touch with their folk «roots». The special «mission» of the village teachers was in promoting the ideas of «Russian elements» and historical proximity to Russia among Belarusian peasants.

When getting acquainted with the ethnic traditions of the peoples of Yakutia, special attention should be paid to the national culture of the evens as a small indigenous people of the North. Cultural and ethnographic features of Yakutia are one of the most important resources for the development of tourism. The main purpose of the work is to consider the potential of ethnic tourism on the example of the village of Sebyan-Kuel in the Кobyai district of Yakutia. The following specific ethnographic methods are used: the method of included observation and indepth interview. The result was that in this remote mountains of the Verkhoyansk ridge preserved the original culture of the local group Lamynkhinsky Evens, which is a unique, non-commodity, and, consequently, an inexhaustible resource for the economy, social and cultural development of the nasleg. In our opinion, the area of Lamynkhinsky nasleg can become one of the most popular tourist destinations due to its uniqueness in ethnic and extreme, ecological, hunting and fishing types of tourism.

AbstractThis study presents the first subglacial topography and ice thickness models of the largest ice caps of the Argentine Islands, Wilhelm Archipelago, West Antarctica. During this study, ground-penetrating radar was used to map the thickness and inner structure of the ice caps. Digital surface models of all studied islands were created from aerial images obtained with a small-sized unmanned aerial vehicle and used for the construction of subglacial topography models. Ice caps of the Argentine Islands cover ~50% of the land surface of the islands on average. The maximum thickness of only two islands (Galindez and Skua) exceeds 30 m, while the average thickness of all islands is only ~5 m. The maximum ice thickness reaches 35.3 m on Galindez Island. The ice thickness and glacier distribution are mainly governed by prevailing wind direction from the north. This has created the prominent narrow ice ridges on Uruguay and Irizar islands, which are not supported by topographic obstacles, as well as the elongated shape of other ice caps. The subglacial topography of the ice caps is undulated and mainly dependent on the geological structure and composition of magmatic rocks.

AbstractBismuthinite-bearing quartz veins from the Alston Block of the North Pennine Orefield are all close to, or above, the Rookhope and Tynehead cupolas of the buried Weardale Granite. They are uniform in composition and paragenesis and are earlier than the main fluorite-baryte-galena-sphalerite mineralization of the orefield. Rhythmical crystallization of quartz, chalcopyrite and minor pyrite is followed by fluorite-quartz-chalcopyrite-minor sphalerite-altered pyrrhotite mineralization. Early tin-bearing (up to 0.29 wt.% Sn) chalcopyrite encloses trace amounts of bismuthinite (Bi2S3), synchysite (CaREE(CO3)F2), argentopentlandite (Ag(FeNi)8S8) (close to being stoichiometric), pyrrhotite, cubanite and cosalite (Pb2Bi2S5), while early pyrite carries monoclinic pyrrhotite (close to Fe7S8) and tungsten-bearing cassiterite (up to 1.03 wt.% WO3). Bismuthinite is macroscopically visible and is associated with native bismuth and small, fine-grained, spherical aggregates that qualitative analysis suggests may be cosalite crystals. Synchysite and more rarely monazite, xenotime and adularia are intergrown with bismuthinite. These mineralogical data form part of the basis for an increasing awareness of the contribution of the Weardale Granite to the early phases of mineralization in the Alston Block.

The ruins at Yanıkhan form the remains of a Late Roman village in the interior of Rough Cilicia some 8 kilometres inland from the village of Limonlu on the road to Canbazlı (see Fig. 1). The site has not been frequently visited by scholars, and the first certain reference to its existence was made by the late Professor Michael Gough after his visit on 2 September 1959. Yanıkhan is now occupied only by the Yürüks who for years have wintered on the southern slopes of Sandal Dağ. The ancient settlement at Yanıkhan consisted of a village covering several acres. The remains are still extensive, and some, especially the North Basilica, are very well preserved, but there has been considerable disturbance in recent years as stone and rubble have been removed in order to create small arable clearings. The visible remains include many domestic buildings constructed both from polygonal masonry without mortar and from mortar and rubble with coursed smallstone facing. There are several underground cisterns and a range of olive presses. The countryside around the settlement has been terraced for agricultural purposes in antiquity, and is, like the settlement itself, densely covered with scrub oak and wild olive trees. The most impressive remains are those of the two basilical churches which are of little artistic pretension, but considerable architectural interest. The inscription which forms the substance of this article was found on the lintel block of the main west entrance of the South Basilica.

This granite forms an isolated mass, rising into two eminences a few miles south of Louisburg, called Corvock Brack (1287 feet) and Knockaskeheen (1288 feet). It is a greyish granite—generally fine—grained—consisting of quartz, two felspars,—one orthoclase, the other triclinic, probably oligoclase—and dark green mica. In some places there are patches in which the felspar assumes the appearance of “graphic granite.” Numerous boulders of this granite are strewn over the district to the north-west, and on the south side of Knockaskeheen; the rock is traversed by regular joints ranging N. 10 W., along which it splits off into nearly vertical walls. The position of the granite is shown on Griffith's Geological Map of Ireland, and it is surrounded by schistose beds, generally metamorphosed, and probably of Lower Silurian age. The granite itself is of older date than the Upper Llandovery beds, which lie to the southward.
