Objective Immunomodulation is a therapeutic technique that modulates the balance of cytokines in the body. In this regard, our experiment was conducted to investigate the potential effect of <i>S. coronopifolius</i> crude extract in combination with low dose of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) on depression-like behaviors in female Wistar rats.Methods Sciatic nerve injury was employed to induce depression and intradermal injection of 0.02 mL of BCG per rat was administered to lead an activation of innate immune system. Daily intra-peritoneal injections of 25 mg algae extract kg<sup>-1</sup> body weight were performed for 14 continuous days. Forced Swimming (FS) and Open Field (OF) tests were conducted to assess despairing and spontaneous behaviors. At the end of the experiment, brain was removed to determine the activities of catalase (CAT) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST), whereas spleen and adrenals were used for the histopathological study.Results The combined treatment exhibited antidepressant-like activity in FST by reducing immobility time, without inducing any significant change in ambulatory behavior in OFT. The histological analyses of spleen and adrenal structure showed a conserved architecture.Conclusion The results suggested that algae extract produce an antidepressant-like effect in combination with low dose of BCG, which is possibly trigged by its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Introduction. One of the main problems of modem on-courology is treatment for prostate cancer of intermediate and high risk of progression. Modern radiotherapy in this category of patients has an advantage over surgical methods of treatment. One way to improve the effectiveness of radiotherapy is to escalate the dose in the prostate gland. For this purpose a combination of brachytherapy and remote radiotherapy is used. This combination allows increasing the dose of radiation, thereby providing better local control, reducing complications from neighboring organs. Purpose of the study. To conduct a comparative analysis of efficacy and safety of radical treatment of patients with prostate cancer at medium and high risk of progression using a combination of high and low dose rate brachytherapy with external beam radiotherapy. Materials and methods. 107 patients with prostate cancer of the group of medium and high risk of progression combined treatment (brachytherapy with external beam radiotherapy) was conducted. 53 patients underwent combined treatment (HDR-brachytherapy and external beam radiotherapy). 54 patients underwent combined treatment (LDR-brachytherapy and external beam radiotherapy). The observation period was 5 years. Conclusion. In a comparative analysis in groups of combined radiotherapy with the use of high-dose and low-dose-rate brachytherapy, the same effectiveness of immediate and long-term results of treatment was demonstrated. A significant reduction in early and late toxic reactions in patients with high-power brachytherapy has been demonstrated.

The objective – to presents the observation of combined treatment of a patient with arteriovenous malformation of the lower jaw.A man, 21 years old, was hospitalized in the Scientific-Practical Center of Endovascular Neuroradiology NAMS of Ukraine with complaints of bleeding from a tooth socket after an attempt to remove the 6th tooth (first painter) of the lower jaw on the left. According to the performed survey radiography of the lower jaw, an aneurysmal bone cyst was revealed in the body of the lower jaw on the left, corresponding to the localization of bleeding. According to cerebral angiography, an arteriovenous malformation of the lower jaw was revealed on the left, the afferent arteries of which were: the right facial artery (a branch of the right external carotid artery (ECA)), the left facial artery (a branch of the left ECA), the lower alveolar artery, the superior-posterior alveolar artery (branches of the maxillary artery ‒ the terminal branch of the left ECA) with drainage into a vein, which was located in the body of the lower jaw. In order to exclude the malformation from the bloodstream and prevent bleeding, a controlled embolization of the malformation was performed using non-spherical emboli – polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) particles from Cook, USA. Using a transfemoral approach, a guide catheter was inserted into the orifice of the ECA, then a Headway 27 microcatheter (Microvention, USA) was passed through it along a Traxes 14 guide wire (Microvention, USA), the afferent arteries of the malformation were selectively cathete-rized in turn, and embolization was performed after superselective angiography. The patient was discharged in a satisfactory condition. Two weeks after the operation, the bleeding resumed. The performed control cerebral angiography revealed a relapse of the malformation with a change in its angioarchitectonics ‒ the filling of the malformation in the late arterial and venous phases of cerebral blood flow was noted. Re-embolization was performed using PVA emboli (Cook), which was supplemented by transcutaneous puncture of the drainage vein in the mandible and its embolization with histoacryl (B. Braun, Germany) and lipiodol (Guerbet, France) in a 1 : 1 ratio. Results. As a result of using this technique, it was possible to turn off the malformation completely. For 6 months from the moment of surgery, no bleeding was noted, and subsequently the patient had a tooth removed without complications.Conclusions. The proposed method for treating arteriovenous malformation of the lower jaw, proposed in this case, showed the effectiveness of a combination of endovascular embolization in combination with transcutaneous embolization of the draining vein and can be successfully used to treat this pathology.

SUMMARYWe evaluated the effect of chemotherapy with a sequential combined treatment of a low dose of benznidazole and allopurinol, in different schedules of administration, in experimental models of acute and chronicTrypanosoma cruziinfection. Mice were infected with NicaraguaT. cruziisolate, a virulent parasite from an endemic area of Nicaragua, genotyped asTcI (Grossoet al. 2010). We assessed survival rate, IgG levels, histopathological studies and quantified parasitaemia. A 15% survival rate was recorded in untreated mice during the acute phase ofT. cruziinfection. Allopurinol administered immediately after benznidazole treatment was able to reduce parasitaemia and attenuate tissue damage by reducing inflammation.Trypanosoma cruzi-specific antibodies also decreased in 40–50% of the treated mice. The addition of allopurinol during the chronic phase showed the highest beneficial effect, not only by reducing parasitaemia but also by lowering the degree of inflammation and fibrosis.

Nanoparticles in general (NPs) and/or nanomaterials offer remarkable opportunities in industrial production, daily consumables, medicine, biotechnology, electronics and numerous other important commercial and economical areas. Among all these areas, nanomedicine has opened novel treatments for problematic diseases such as viral, genetic, cancer, AIDS, etc. There is limited information available regarding translocation and distribution of NPs in the body and in the environment. Additionally, there is also need for more information on NPs toxicity. Recently has been demonstrated that physiological barriers such as pulmonary and gastro-intestinal tract are affected.The main objective of this work is to use functionalized metal NPs, as emissive agent markers, assess their internalization in cells and evaluate toxicity to cells.Using the emissive two probes synthesized in a one-pot reaction using fluoresceine as chromophore, several gold (Au), round shape, and silver (Ag) NPs (round and triangular shapes) were functionalized in organic media and water by Brust and Turkevish methodology, using tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOABr) as a common stabilizer and sodium borohydride as reducing agent. All has been characterized by UV-vis and emission spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) (Figure 1), and Light scattering. To study the route of internalization into the cell NP-complexes were injected intraperitoneally in fish (Carassius auratus). After 48 hour fish were sampled and sacrificed and liver and intestine processed for histology examination. Additional sub-samples were stored at – 80ºC for enzymatic analysis (glutathione-S-transferase and catalase). Blood was also collected from healthy non-injected fish, for leucocyte separation followed by incubation with the metal NPs and cell viability assays. The presence of emissive NPs in cells was examined by microscopy using a Leica microscope (ATC 2000) adapted for epifluorescence (EF).The microscopy analysis showed that apparently both metal NPs were internalized by leucocytes and intestine cells (Figure 2a and 2b) but apparently not by hepatocytes. However, it is still to clarify if NPs internalization occurred in dead or dying cells only, with more permeable membranes, or also in living cells. Another possibility relates to the detection limits and resolution of the microscope used: the fraction of NPs entering is too low and not detectable with this type of equipment. No significant fluorescence was detected in controls. Viability assays showed higher mortality rates in leucocytes incubated with triangular Ag NPs suggesting that the type of metal and shape have influence in cell toxicity. In general, enzymatic assays indicate low oxidative stress for cells. However, GST results show significant (p > 0.05) differences in livers from fish injected with round Ag NPs. With respect to catalase, significant differences (p > 0.05) were detected in livers from fish injected with round Au NPs. Although the presented results are preliminary they suggest that functionalized NPs are able to penetrate cell membranes.
