This work has as an objective a study of evolution of characteristic properties of crystalline microstructure and mechanical hardening of aluminum by iron oxide (III), (hematite α-Fe2O3) nan energetic material known as thermite, samples of massive alloys, Al (base)-X wt% Fe2O3 (X =2, 4, 16 and 40) were studied.Al-Fe2O3 composite was developed by a sintering technique from the mixtures of compacted powders of Al high purity and α-Fe2O3 under a temperature of 700 °C for 1 hour and then slowly cooled. We have not noted the formation of thermite as foreseen by the chemical reaction due to the mixture of aluminum with hematite. The evolution of crystalline microstructures and the morphologies of surface were determined by means of X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and optical metallography. The mechanical behavior was characterized by the tests of Vickers indentation and corrosion resistance by electrochemical tests.

Microstructure and corrosion behavior of the Mg-3Al-xMn (x = 0, 0.12, 0.21, 0.36, 0.45) (hereafter in wt.%) alloys were experimentally investigated by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electrochemical, and hydrogen evolution tests. A new self-constructed Mg-Al-Mn-Fe thermodynamic database was used to predict the solidification paths of the alloys. The addition of Mn showed no grain refinement in the cast Mg-3Al alloys. According to the microstructure observation, Al-Fe phases were observed in the non-Mn-added alloy, while Al8Mn5(LT) (Al8Mn5 in low temperature) became the main intermetallic phase in the Mn-added alloys, and the amount increased gradually with the Mn addition. The τ–Al0.89Mn1.11 phase with lower Al/(Fe + Mn) ratio was observed in the alloys with 0.36 and 0.45 wt.% Mn content. According to the electrochemical tests, all five alloys showed localized corrosion characteristics in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. Compared with the Mg-3Al alloy, the corrosion resistance of Mn-added alloys were significantly improved and increased gradually with the Mn addition, which was due to the variation of Al-containing intermetallic compounds. The present experimental investigations and thermodynamic calculations confirmed the mechanism that the increasing amount of Al8Mn5(LT) with Mn addition could encapsulate the B2-Al(Mn,Fe) phase with higher Fe. Therefore, it could prevent this detrimental phase from contacting magnesium matrix, thus suppressing micro-galvanic corrosion and improving corrosion resistance gradually.

The grayish black film was prepared on AM50 magnesium alloy with a new method which combined chemical conversion with micro-arc oxidation (MAO). The optimum formula of chemical conversion was obtained by L9(34) orthogonal test. Meanwhile, the morphology, structure, composition and corrosion resistance of films were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy spectrum analysis (energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS)), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electrochemical tests and CuSO4 drip experiment. The results indicated that Mo element was introduced into the MAO film by chemical conversion pretreatment. The surface of composite film was smooth and compact. The main phase composition of the composite film were SiO2, Mo9O[Formula: see text], MgSiO[Formula: see text] Mg2SiO4 and Mo9O[Formula: see text] was identified to be responsible for giving color to the film. The corrosion resistance of the grayish black film was improved obviously.

Composite coatings were prepared using electroless nickel bath containing different concentrations of Al2O3nano-particles. The analyses of coating compositions, carried out by EDS, showed that there is marginal difference between phosphorus contents of NiP and NiP/nano-Al2O3deposits. The structure of the coatings was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It has been found that the co-deposition of nano-Al2O3particles with Ni disturbs the NiP coating’s regular surface structure and increases its surface roughness. DC and AC electrochemical tests were carried out on such coatings in a 3.5wt.% solution of NaCl in order to evaluate their corrosion resistance. The potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests both showed that, the corrosion resistance of NiP-Al2O3coatings firstly increases and then decreases when Al2O3concentration in electroless bath is increasing, but the corrosion resistance of NiP-Al2O3composite coating is better than that of amorphous NiP coating.

In this article, we report the crystallization of struvite in sodium metasilicate gel by single diffusion gel growth technique. The obtained crystals have a very rich morphology displaying 18 faces. In this study, the habit and morphology of the obtained struvite crystals are analyzed. The crystals were examined and identified as pure struvite by single X-ray diffraction (XRD). The orthorhombic polar noncentrosymmetric space group Pmn21 was identified. The structure of the crystal was determined at a temperature of 90 K. Our research indicates a lack of polymorphism, resulting from the temperature lowering to 90 K, which has not been previously reported. The determined unit cell parameters are as follows a = 6.9650(2) Å, b = 6.1165(2) Å, c = 11.2056(3) Å. The structure of struvite is presented here with a residual factor R1 = 1.2% at 0.80 Å resolution. We also present thermoanalytical study of struvite using thermal analysis techniques such as thermogravimetry (TG), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA).

Natural stones (limestones, granites, and marble) from mines located in northeastern Brazil were investigated to discover their potential for use in civil construction. The natural stones were characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, and optical microscopy. The physical-mechanical properties (apparent density, porosity, water absorption, compressive and flexural strength, impact, and abrasion) and chemical resistance properties were also evaluated. The results of the physical-mechanical analysis indicated that the natural stones investigated have the potential to be used in different environments (interior, exterior), taking into account factors such as people’s circulation and exposure to chemical agents.

Abstract${\text{Pb}}_{5}{\text{O}}_{2}\left[{\text{WO}}_{6}\right]$ was discovered as a frequently observed side phase during our investigation on lead tungstates. Its crystal structure was solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction ($P{2}_{1}/n$, $a=7.4379\left(2\right)$ Å, $b=12.1115\left(4\right)$ Å, $c=10.6171\left(3\right)$ Å, $\beta =90.6847\left(8\right)$°, $Z=4$, ${R}_{\text{int}}=0.038$, ${R}_{1}=0.020$, $\omega {R}_{2}=0.029$, 4188 data, 128 param.) and is isotypic with ${\text{Pb}}_{5}{\text{O}}_{2}\left[{\text{Te}}_{6}\right]$. ${\text{Pb}}_{5}{\text{O}}_{2}\left[{\text{WO}}_{6}\right]$ comprises a layered structure built up by non-condensed [WO6]${}^{6-}$ octahedra and ${\left[{\text{O}}_{4}{\text{Pb}}_{10}\right]}^{12+}$ oligomers. The compound was characterised by spectroscopic measurements (Infrared (IR), Raman and Ultraviolet–visible (UV/Vis) spectra) as well as quantum chemical and electrostatic calculations (density functional theory (DFT), MAPLE) yielding a band gap of 2.9 eV fitting well with the optical one of 2.8 eV. An estimation of the refractive index based on the Gladstone-Dale relationship yielded $n\approx 2.31$. Furthermore first results of the thermal analysis are presented.

Molybdenum (Mo) is an important alloying element in maraging steels. In this study, we altered the Mo concentration during the production of four cobalt-free maraging steels using an electroslag refining process. The microstructure of the four forged maraging steels was evaluated to examine phase contents by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Additionally, we assessed the corrosion resistance of the newly developed alloys in 3.5% NaCl solution and 1 M H2SO4 solution through potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Furthermore, we performed SEM and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis after corrosion to assess changes in microstructure and Raman spectroscopy to identify the presence of phases on the electrode surface. The microstructural analysis shows that the formation of retained austenite increases with increasing Mo concentrations. It is found from corrosion study that increasing Mo concentration up to 4.6% increased the corrosion resistance of the steel. However, further increase in Mo concentration reduces the corrosion resistance.

Zn2SiO4:Eu3+, Dy3+ phosphors have been prepared through the sol-gel process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric and ddifferential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), FT-IR spectra and photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize the resulting phosphors. The results of XRD indicated that the phosphors crystallized completely at 1000oC. In Zn2SiO4:Eu3+,Dy3+ phosphors, the Eu3+ and Dy3+ show their characteristic red(613nm, 5D0-7F2), blue (481nm, 4F9/2–6H15/2) and yellow (577nm, 4F9/2–6H13/2) emissions.
