It is shown that all stationary self-exciting point processes with finite intensity may be represented as Poisson cluster processes which are age-dependent immigration-birth processes, and their existence is established. This result is used to derive some counting and interval properties of these processes using the probability generating functional.

Abstract In this work we consider the generalized Pólya process with baseline intensity function r and parameters α and β recently studied by Cha (2014). The aim of this work is to provide both univariate and multivariate stochastic comparisons between two generalized Pólya processes with different baseline intensity functions and the same parameters α and β for the epoch and inter-epoch times of the two processes. The comparisons are analogous to stochastic comparisons in Belzunce et al. (2001) for two nonhomogeneous Poisson or pure-birth processes with different intensity functions. Moreover, we study both univariate and multivariate ageing properties of the epoch and inter-epoch times of the generalized Pólya process.

This article reports original research that describes new mothers' experiences of birth and maternity care. Qualitative data were collected through a survey on birth satisfaction, which included space for women to provide comments about their birth and experience of care. Thirty-nine women provided comments that were analyzed using the thematic analysis method. Two themes emerged from the women's experiences: “Unexpected birth processes: expectations and reality” and “Coping with birth: the role of health-care staff.” Participants described unexpected birthing processes, their experiences of care, and maternity care staff's contributions to coping with birth. Implications for practice for childbirth professionals include promotion of physiologic birth, respectful person-centered care during all phases of perinatal care, and the value of childbirth preparation.

An urn contains balls of different colours, which are randomly drawn one at a time. After each draw the number of balls in the urn with the same colour as the ball last drawn is changed. Special cases are sampling with and without replacement, and Pólya sampling. The drawing stops when a given number of colours has been drawn a given number of times. The number of times the different colours have been drawn is studied in this paper by imbedding the urn scheme in birth processes. Both exact and asymptotic results are obtained. In particular, waiting times for sampling with and without replacement and for Pólya sampling are considered.
