The collection of the Kórnik Library includes the digestum vestus manuscript, the uniqueness of which is emphasized by art historians. There are two main reasons why it is unique. Firstly, because of the number of illuminations in the legal manuscript. Secondly, because of the confirmed fact that relevant part of illuminations was implementing an illustrative program. The paper starts with presenting the history of the manuscript. The main part of the paper focuses on the issues if and how the illustrative program has reflected the medieval teaching method based on the first 24 books of Justinian’s Digest (digestum vetus). The analysis of allocating the illuminations and links between illuminations and specific legal issues give rise to recognizing the main features of this method: central role of the tort (aquilian) liability, semi-systemic approach to the formation and performance of contract and marginal role of the texts related to legal method and general concepts of law at the beginning of the Digest. This hypothesis formulated on the basis of one, unique manuscript should inspire further debate about the fragmentary pragmatic nature of medieval law teaching based on the Digest.

This article surveys the history of English studies and education in Japan, paying special attention to the role of literary texts and stylistics. Firstly, the role of literature and stylistics in Japan is discussed from a pedagogical point of view, including both English as a foreign language and Japanese as a native language. Secondly, the way in which stylistics has contributed to literary criticism in the country is examined, with reference to the history of literary stylistics since 1980. Finally, this article considers further applications of stylistics to language study in Japan, offering two examples: analysis of thought presentation in Yukio Mishima’s Megami (2006[1955]), and the teaching of an English poem and a Japanese haiku to Japanese EFL students. The overall aim of this article is to demonstrate that literature as language teaching material and stylistics as a critical and teaching method are significant not only in understanding English, but also in appreciating our own native language if it is not English.

According to Xingzhi Tao, education should focus on life, life determines education, and then education remakes life, the role of education can only be played through life. Art comes from life, it is the way that children experience the world perceptually and also the other language to express their understanding of the world. However, with the development of Arts education, existing problems are gradually revealed. Based on the analysis of current Arts activities, the research was carried out on the following issues that children don’t have the effective experience before Art activities; the content of Art activities doesn’t conform to the children’s experience and life in the teaching process; the teaching form and materials are single and children lack interest problems, etc. By observing and experiencing life, the children can accumulate perceptual experience. By following the children’s experiences and life, we can explore the teaching content. By broadening the forms and materials of art activities, the children are glad to perform, which will improve children’s life observation and aesthetic ability, stimulate children’s creative interest being willing to create and performance, improve the ability of teachers’ observation, curriculum producing and teaching skills and it also explores the use of art teaching method and life-oriented materials in rural kindergartens.

The article is devoted to the references to the Tatar scholar Shihabaddin Mardjani in the Dagestani Arabic-script manuscripts written in the first third of the 20th century. Daghestani scholars noted the important role of Mardjani and his works in the intellectual history of Islam. For this reason, they travelled to Kazan to get an acquaintance with him and copied his works. Dagestani scholars wrote reviews on his works as well as dedicated poems to Mardjani himself. Later, the name Mardjani entered the Dagestani legal tradition in the framework of debates on taqlid and ijtihad. Along with classical Arab scholars, the name of Mardjani has been often referred in Daghestani manuscripts on the theory of Muslim Law. Althoug Dagestani Muslim jurists held different views on issues of taqlid and ijtihad, each of them interpreted the ideas of Mardjani on Islamic legal issues in his own way. Regardless of their preferences in the matters of theory of Islamic law, Dagestani scholars highly valued the authority of Mardjani as a one of the major scholars in the Islamic World.

Preaching and performance is a relatively recent development in homiletical discourses and preaching practices. There is much promise in approaching preaching in this creative way. Attention will be paid to different promises related to this homiletical approach. In a next round of reflection the attention shifts to the way in which a specific approach to performance, also known as theo-drama, can not only enhance the preaching act, but also helps to understand the paradoxical role of the preacher, the audience and even God in the preaching event. This will be illustrated by looking at one of the sermons of John de Gruchy, which he preached in a very specific time in the history of South Africa. Attention will also be given to the way in which he performed a prophetic and therefore paradoxical role in his opposition to the apartheid government.

Abstract In this paper I distinguish between illustrative and performative uses of artworks in the teaching and communication of philosophy, drawing examples from the history of art and my own practice. The former are where works are used merely to illustrate and communicate a philosophical idea or argument, the latter are where the artist or teacher philosophizes through the creation of art. I hope to promote future collaboration between philosophers, art historians and artists, with artworks becoming catalysts for artistic-philosophical investigation, thus revitalizing the idea of universities embodying ongoing and open-ended conversations.

Rote versus note beginning instrumental pedagogy has been an active topic for music educators. Traditional method books have often comprised a significant portion of beginning instrumental curricula, though content has varied and may have been based on convention. Advocates of a rote-before-note approach have recommended that singing, movement, developing aural skills, teaching expressiveness, and creativity may provide students with enhanced contextual knowledge and experiences to better learn to read notation. However, there may be gaps in research of music reading and teaching method. This literature review includes a discussion of the history of rote and note education in the United States, an overview of five major pedagogical approaches, and an examination of music reading and performance research. The article is intended to initiate a discussion of teaching methods, practices, and curriculum selection for developing literacy and performance skills in secondary instrumental music classrooms.

This chapter addresses the role of personality traits in group decision-making and performance processes. It begins with a review of the history of interaction between group and personality researchers to show that, at one time, the domains went hand in hand. Methodological concerns in the 1950s, however, led group researchers to move away from personality, resulting in a piecemeal approach to personality influences in groups. Following this historical analysis, modern work in conflict, group performance, group decision-making, and group maintenance is reviewed, with a key theme being that although there are few systematic studies of traits in groups, there is quite a bit of isolated work being done. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the barriers to increased collaboration between the two camps, why such collaboration is important for both, and some ideas about what a Person × Situation interaction within a group might reflect.

A thorough understanding of the role of economics in the various sectors of the maritime industry is vital to success in increasingly global markets. In this paper, the authors discuss the importance of economics in the maritime industry and the consequences of ignoring the effect of economic factors. The authors explore the effect that economics has on the industry's organization, including its structure, behavior, and performance. They examine the relationship between maritime economics and transportation economics, and explore implications of modeling the demand for shipping and shipbuilding services as a derivative of the demand for international trade and commerce. In this regard, the authors present the U.S. maritime industry and chart significant milestones in its development. This factors into a discussion of the impact of the globalization of commercial shipping. The authors also consider the history of government involvement and the military role of the maritime industry. The central thesis of this discussion is that the markets for ships and shipping are becoming increasingly more competitive, and less susceptible to outside constraint. The authors then illustrate their thesis by presenting case studies capturing the two main segments of the maritime industry: international shipping and international shipbuilding. The authors prescribe the need for a market-driven industry receiving minimal intervention by government. Finally, the authors discuss the role of SNAME's Panel 0–36, "Maritime Economics," in relation to the concerns of maritime economics that embrace far-reaching issues with significant application to shipping and shipbuilding in the United States.
