APPLYING APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY AND FOOD DIVERSIFICATION IN SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES OF MILKFISH PROCESSING IN BULU CINDEA VILLAGE, BUNGORO DISTRICT, PANGKEP. Village of Bulu Cindea Bungoro District is a village located in Pangkep Regency. The village has the potential in developing milk fish based processed food products. The abundance of milkfish products in this area has a positive impact on the Small and Medium Enterprises in the milk processing industry. Milkfish is very popular with the community because it has a low price and has a specific taste. Every 100 grams of fresh milkfish contains: 129 kcal energy, 76.85% water content, 20.38 gram fat content, 20.38 mg protein content, 150 mg phosphorus content, 2 mg iron, vitamin A l50 SI, vitamin B1 : 0.05 mg, and also contains Omega-3 of 14.2%. Milkfish has weaknesses, namely the presence of many thorn bones scattered throughout the meat section and the diversification of processed products is still simple with low product quality, packaging that is not hygenic, packaging identity that includes labeling and nutritional chemical composition has not been met and inadequate business licensing. Empowerment of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises is the key to the development of small industries in Pangkep Regency, both in terms of quality and quantity, as well as its supporting factors. Through the Community Partnership Program activities, a number of activities to develop fresh milkfish processing business without thorns and shredded fish to Small and Medium Enterprises who are partners are UKM Alifa Mandiri, which is one of the platforms to empower food processing industry players. This activity is very important considering the diversification of processed milkfish processing technology without thorns and shredded fish is still done conventionally so that it requires appropriate technology and diversification of appropriate processing.

The small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are key players towards reviving the economy and livelihood development in Tanzania, yet their involvement in international business is still unsatisfactory. This study therefore assessed the three major setbacks for industrialization of Arusha’s SMEs namely as information, finance and quality. A cross-section research design was conducted using questionnaires. Through non-probability sampling, 50 respondents were stratified selected from SMEs owners, employees, business development support organizations and regulators. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics and logit model. The findings on the existing business environment revealed that: majority of the SMEs involve women (68%) dealing with handcraft and tailoring, with less than five years of business experience. Moreover, the major identified information setbacks are low access to information source, use of irrelevancy market information, use of in effective medium of communication and high cost of the information. Besides, other financial related setbacks are limited sources of capital, lack of collateral, poor credibility history and high transaction cost. On quality setbacks include selling semi processed products, poor finished product and packaging materials as well insufficient processing machinery. Thus for SMEs internationalization the following recommendations are established: improving accessibility and affordability of relevant market information; designing various financial products at reasonable lending rates, strengthening entrepreneurial skills and formalization of enterprises; enhancing availability of processing machinery and packaging materials for improving product quality and competitiveness as well as avoiding selling of semi processed products . Above all, the government, regulators, private sector organizations and other key players along the value chain must play their respective relevant role towards supporting SMEs.

Abstract The views regarding the role and the need for state development banks have evolved in the 20th century, from considering their role as very important in the 1950s, through the stance of their inadequacy and ineffectiveness, to a renewed interest for public development banks at the beginning of 21st century. In this study we will concentrate on the state development banks as an important instrument of state financial support to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The Republic of Srpska Investment-Development Bank (RSIDB) provided the empirical context for our research. By applying the Mann-Whitney U Test and the correlation analysis the authors examined the effect of RSIDB loans on certain business performance indicators of SMEs. From the results of Mann-Whitney U Test it can be concluded that the average sales, number of employees and net profit in the five-year period after using the RSIDB loan is statistically significantly higher for the RSIDB borrowers compared to non-borrowers. The results of correlation analysis show that there is statistically significant positive correlation of medium strength between the use of RSIDB loans and the total sales, net profit and number of employees in the 5-year period after using the RSIDB loan. The study showed the positive impact of RSIDB loans on the growth of sales, net profit and employment of SME borrowers.

Abstract: Many sectors have felt the impact of the global pandemic (Covid-19) which has occurred for almost a year. The global pandemic that is being felt by almost all of these countries has caused the economy to become paralyzed. Many companies have gone out of business, which automatically creates more unemployment. Based on observations made tentatively during this time of the pandemic, more and more people are selling online. Selling online is an option, because it doesn't require a lot of capital, it can also be marketed as widely as possible. some of the products sold, both finished products and processed products, already have a good appearance, because the shooting and editing processes are carried out by professionals. However, it is different from business actors who are new to online buying and selling who have limited capital, of course they cannot hire professionals to display the beauty and aesthetics of the products to be sold. Therefore, Digital Imaging training is provided to assist Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in editing products, so that the products sold can compete. Product editing is also quite easy, just by maximizing the Smart Phone by downloading several applications that support this editing process.

The problem that arises is regarding the packaging that is less attractive and can threaten the entrepreneur if the quality of the packaging is not changed immediately because in the production process the packaging still uses manual machines in the process. The quality  of  product  packaging  is  considered  important  considering  that  the  first interaction that will attract consumers to make a purchase is through the outer appearance of the product known as packaging. This research activity aims to provide information about the ideal quality of packaging to penetrate a sale and have a positive impact on Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) players in order to stand and survive in the midst of intense competition.   Keywords: quality of product packaging, sales, MSMEs

This chapter examines the effects of different types of start-up rates on subsequent employment change. Longitudinal data on start-ups and employment in Portuguese regions in the period 1996–2007 is used for the analysis. The study addresses whether diverse types of new small- and medium-sized enterprise formation have heterogeneous effects on regional employment generation. It is found that, for the range considered, the seven types of start-ups led to significant and negative effects on the average variation of regional employment. It is also observed that these effects were more negative for start-ups with at least one business owner with higher education in engineering and for start-ups with at least one business owner with higher education in management. The last conclusion is that the share of highly skilled employees has a statistically significant and positive impact on the average employment change and, therefore, on regional development.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a conceptual model that portrays how contextual factors and behavioural cooperation mechanisms influence the effect of trade associations on the export performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in a Latin American emerging economy. Design/methodology/approach The author draws on multiple streams of literature including: co-location, networks, cooperation and export performance to suggest a series of solid theoretical insights to the literature on SMEs’ export performance, networks and co-location in the Latin American context. Findings Contextual factors and behavioural cooperation mechanisms influence the effect of trade associations on export performance determining the final sign of such effect. Trust plays a role within all proposed mechanisms, but is not as fundamental as previously characterised in studies on the export performance of SMEs. Cooperation might exist, prevail, and exert a positive impact on SMEs’ export performance even in the absence of trust. Originality/value This paper contributes to the literature on SMEs’ export performance, networks and co-location in the Latin American context by presenting a theoretical model that enfolds co-location, networks, trade associations and cooperation effects on SMEs’ export performance under the same foundation. It creates the categories of “contextual factors” and “behavioural cooperation mechanisms” to differentiate the elements that weight on the relationship between firms and trade associations, thus facilitating or hindering export performance. It guides policy makers and company managers on where to focus when incentivizing conduct towards a more productive export performance in Latin America and other emerging economies.
