Rice (Oryza sativa) is the primary food crop in the world. The use of natural pesticides made from essential plants has begun to be developed because it is useful in controlling some plant pests. This study aimed to investigate lemongrass oil's effectiveness in controlling brown planthopper pests in rice plants. This study consist of five concentrations using lemongrass oil and sterile distilled water as control was repeated three times. The highest mortality of brown planthopper was found at 1.6% concentration (100%), while the lowest mortality was 0.1% concentration (26.66%). The lemongrass oil can be used to control brown planthoppers because of the LC50 value at a concentration of 8233.34 ppm (0.8%) and LT50 at 6 HAT.

An extensive study about egg parasitoid biodiversity in different plant growth stages is an important need. This study was aimed to determine the diversity and abundance of egg parasitoids Nilaparvata lugens on different rice growth stages in Saketi, Pandeglang, Banten. The parasitoids sample was collected three times with two days interval sampling in three villages, i.e. Sodong (location I), Sindanghayu (location II), and Sukalangu (location III) from February to September 2018. Ten plants (as bait: rice that infected by N. lugens eggs) were put during two days along the transect line (100 meters) with 10 m space in between. The findings revealed that the abundance richness (S), the diversity index (H'), and similarity (J') of egg parasitoids of N. lugens were higher in the location I than those in the locations II and III. The study indicated that the diversity and abundance of egg parasitoids of N. lugens decreased in the generative phase of rice growth.

ABSTRACTEffectiveness of BPMC insecticide and suren leaf extract on brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens Stal.) and its natural enemy population on Ciherang rice varietyEffectiveness study of BPMC insecticide and suren leaf extract esticide against brown planthopper and its side-effect on its natural enemy population on paddy Ciherang variety was conducted in rice field of Balai Besar Peramalan Organisme Pengganggu Tumbuhan (BBPOPT), Karawang, West Java from May to August 2015. The experimental design used was Randomized Blok Design with 7 treatments and 4 replications ie suren leaf extract of 50 g/l, 100 g/l and 150 g/l, three concentrations of BPMC of 0.5 ml/l, 1.0 ml/l and 1.5 ml/l, and a control treatment. The results showed that BPMC insecticide and suren leaf extract were able to suppress the population of brown planthopper and influenced its natural enemy population. The treatment of 50 g/l suren leaf extract gave the highest suppression of the brown planthopper population. It was also caused no negative impact to the natural enemies of P. fuscipes and L. pseudoannulata. The application of 1.5 ml/l of BPMC insecticide gave the highest grain weight average of 37.80 kg/plot compared to the lowest production in control treatment of 32.63 kg/plot. Therefore, application of BPMC insecticide and suren leaf extract effectively suppressed the brown planthopper population and the natural enemy existence was assumed to affect the rice grain production in this study. Keywords: BPMC insecticide, Natural enemy, Suren, PlanthopperABSTRAKStudi keefektifan insektisida BPMC dan ekstrak daun suren terhadap hama wereng batang coklat (WBC) dan efek samping terhadap musuh alami wereng pada padi varietas Ciherang dilaksanakan di sawah Balai Besar Peramalan Organisme Pengganggu Tumbuhan (BBPOPT) Karawang mulai Mei 2015 sampai Agustus 2015. AbstractThe brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens is a serious phloem-feeding pest of rice in China. The current study focuses on a saccharopine dehydrogenase (SDH) that catalyzes the penultimate reaction in biosynthesis of the amino acid lysine (Lys), which plays a role in insect growth and carnitine production (as a substrate). The protein, provisionally designated as NlylsSDH [a SDH derived from yeast-like symbiont (YLS) in N. lugens], had a higher transcript level in abdomens, compared with heads, wings, legs and thoraces, which agrees with YLS distribution in N. lugens. Ingestion of Nlylssdh targeted double-stranded RNA (dsNlylssdh) for 5, 10 and 15 days decreased the mRNA abundance in the hoppers by 47, 70 and 31%, respectively, comparing with those ingesting normal or dsegfp diets. Nlylssdh knockdown slightly decreased the body weights, significantly delayed the development of females, and killed approximately 30% of the nymphs. Moreover, some surviving adults showed two apparent phenotypic defects: wing deformation and nymphal cuticles remained on tips of the legs and abdomens. The brachypterours/macropterours and sex ratios (female/male) of the adults on the dsRNA diet were lowered compared with the adults on diets without dsRNA. These results suggest that Nlylssdh encodes a functional SDH protein. The adverse effect of Nlylssdh knockdown on N. lugens implies the importance of Lys in hopper development. This study provides a proof of concept example that Nlylssdh could serve as a possible dsRNA-based pesticide for planthopper control.
