Abstract Considering the research project entitled ‘Methodological proposal to standardize the construction and evaluation process for a software product that allows Colombian SMEs measure software quality’, the formulation of a model for the development and management of a software project has been possible. For this specific case, the present paper deals with the model (as a methodology), and suggests that the quality of the product increases if the process begins with a project charter which must be adequate, accurate, as wide as possible and as participatory as required by the actors of the process -producer, customer and/or sponsor, development team, final users, etc.-. The paper presents the proposal for MSMEs software industry to improve the process and the product quality. As a result, in 2013 a validation of the model through the development of eight software applications in different sectors such as education, services, industry and trade is being done. Once these applications are completed, it will be proceeded to compare their quality in performance with a similar product, in such a way that the new development model effectiveness can be concluded or not. Cost estimation of software projects is risky task in project management field. It is a process of predicting the cost and effort required to develop a software applications. Several cost estimation models have been proposed over the last thirty to forty years. Many software companies track and analyse the current project by measuring the planed cost and estimate the accuracy. If the estimation is not proper then it leads to the failure of the project. One of the challenging tasks in project management is how to evaluate the different cost estimation and selecting the proper model for the current project. This paper summarizes the different cost estimation model and its techniques. It also provides the proper model selection for the different types of the projects.

Choquet integral is a type of aggregation operator that is commonly used to aggregate the interrelated information. Nowadays, this operator has been successfully embedded with fuzzy measures in solving various evaluation problems. Inspired from this new development, this paper aims to introduce a combined Choquet integral-fuzzy measures (CI-FM) operator that uses the Shapley value standard and interaction index to deal with the interactions between elements of information. The proposed operator takes into account not only the importance of elements or their ordered positions but also the interaction among criteria during the evaluation process. A case of customers’ satisfaction over two fast restaurants in Malaysia is presented to illustrate the application of the proposed aggregation operator. Based on three customers’ satisfaction criteria, restaurant 1 and restaurant 2 received CI-FM scores of 0.711011 and 0.704945, respectively. Interestingly, the criterion “services” constantly received the highest rating across both restaurants. In addition, the proposed aggregation operator successfully identified which restaurant is superior in the eyes of customers. Finally, this study offers some research ideas for the future.

The Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model is often referred to as a new effective way in funding issue solving for infrastructure development and management. A PPP model project involves numerous of stakeholders and the most typical and basic PPP model comprised of three actors: Government, the private sector and financial institutions. Based on the features of PPPs, the differences between PPP model and traditional financing methods are clearly demonstrated through the financing period; investment and financing subject; property ownership; financing credit basis; financing purposes; source of repayment; guarantee; and degree of financing risk. On the other hand, the selection of a suitable structure from the financial source is based on the choice of the best combination of equity and debt. In terms of project financing structure, it can be divided into three main sections: equity contributions, debt contributions and mezzanine/Subordinated contributions. Moreover, according to the characteristics of different PPPs, the financial structure of the project will be determined to optimize the financial benefits of the project. Furthermore, for each stage of the project, financial instruments will be used appropriately. This paper will deliver a summary and review of PPP projects, as well as the stakeholders involved in implementing a project under a basic PPP model. In addition, this paper will discuss the financial structure of a project, and the PPP project financial instruments that commonly used will also be clearly analyzed. Based on the in-depth knowledge of the PPP model, the paper will depend on the development situation of the PPP model in some countries, especially China, to provide visual examples of each financial instrument.

Interface signs are the communication cues of web interfaces, through which users interact. Examples of interface signs are small images, navigational links, buttons and thumbnails. Although intuitive interface signs are crucial elements of a good user interface (UI), prior research ignored these in UI design and usability evaluation process. This chapter outlines how a design science research (DSR) approach is used to develop a Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) artifact (semiotic framework) for design and evaluation of user-intuitive web interface signs. This chapter describes how the principles and guidelines of DSR approach are adopted, while performing the activities of the DSR process model to construct the artifact.

A workflow is a series of work processes performed under rules that reflect the formal structure of the organization in which they are carried out and the relationships between their various parts. Workflow applications are software applications used to automate part of workflow processes. They run under the control of a workflow management system (WfMS). The WfMS usually comprises an organizational model, describing the process structure, and a process model, describing the process logic. The Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC, 2008) publishes a set of workflow definitions and related material, including a reference model. Databases are commonly used as a WfMS supporting technology. Not only workflow data are maintained in databases but also the rules governing processes can be stored in database schemas. Database functionality can be used both for defining and managing process models as well as for environment notification and process enactment. This article shows how particular database-related technologies can be used to support WfMS.

The evaluation process model consisting of front-end, formative, and summative studies has received fairly wide acceptance among professionals in various kinds of interpretation work. Evaluation can be used throughout the development of exhibits and programs. This acceptance, however, is not as widespread as might be desirable. While some professionals in interpretive settings accept evaluation and incorporate it into routine work, others do not. Misunderstanding about the role of applied social science research is one source of resistance. Misunderstandings can focus around purposes for evaluation, the real world context of applied research, and methods of study. Other barriers include differences in decision-making philosophy, such as the value put on intuitive judgment versus use of rational data-based decisions. A number of political factors can inhibit use of evaluation, including fear of findings that are critical of interpretive work. Fortunately, there are some ways being developed for coping with resistance to evaluation.

Heuristic evaluation is one of the most used techniques to evaluate the level of usability of a software product. In this research, we performed a comprehensive analysis of the recent studies which report the use of this method in the context of a software development process. The purpose was to identify the specific way in which each author performs this usability evaluation method, in order to propose a formal protocol. After an indeed examination of these studies, we have determined there are several differences in the way this technique is conducted according to the literature. There is no agreement about the number of inspectors that should participate, the usability principles that should be used, the profile of the specialists who must be part of the assessment team, or the evaluation process that should be followed. This work highlights the available settings and a detailed procedure to perform a heuristic evaluation in the domain of software products.
