Technological procedure of slow cooling slag from primary copper production is applied in the purpose of copper recovery in the level of 98.5% to blister. This technological procedure is divided into two phases, first slow cooling of slag on the air for 24 hours, and then accelerated cooling with water for 48 hours. Within the research following methods were used: calculation of nonstationary slag cooling, verification of the calculation using computer simulation of slag cooling in the software package COMSOL Multiphysics and experimental verification of simulation results. After testing of the experimentally gained samples of slowly cooled slag it was found that this technological procedure gives the best results in promoting growth or coagulation of dispersed particles of copper sulfide and copper in the slag, thereby increasing the utilization of the flotation process with a decrease of copper losses through very fine particles.

Waste copper slag is a typical hazardous solid waste containing a variety of valuable elements and has not been effectively disposed of so far. In this paper, a stepwise extraction process was proposed to recover valuable elements (copper, iron, lead and zinc) from waste copper slag. The specific procedures are as follows: (1) A flotation process was adopted to enrich copper, and when the copper grade in the flotation concentrate was 21.50%, the copper recovery rate was 77.78%. (2) The flotation tailings were pelletized with limestone, then the green pellets were reduced, and the magnetic separation process was carried out. When the iron and copper grades in the magnetic concentrate were 90.21% Fe and 0.4% Cu, 91.34% iron and 83.41% copper were recovered, respectively. (3) Non-magnetic tailings were mixed with clinker and standard sand to produce common Portland cement. Several products were obtained from the waste copper slag through the proposed process: flotation concentrate, measured 21.50% Cu; magnetic concentrate, containing 90.21% TFe and 0.4% Cu; direct reduction dust, including 65.17% ZnO and 2.66% PbO; common Portland cement for building construction. The comprehensive utilization method for waste copper slag achieved zero tailing and has great potential for practical application.

The physical properties of ferrites are verysensitive to microstructure, which in turn critically dependson the manufacturing process.Nanocrystalline Lithium Stannoferrite system Li0.5+0.5XFe2.5-1.5XSnXO4,X= (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0) fine particles were successfully prepared by double sintering ceramic technique at pre-sintering temperature of 500oC for 3 h andthepre-sintered material was crushed and sintered finally in air at 1000oC.The structural and microstructural evolutions of the nanophase have been studied using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and the Rietveld method.The refinement results showed that the nanocrystalline ferrite has a two phases of ordered and disordered phases for polymorphous lithium Stannoferrite.The particle size of as obtained samples were found to be ~20 nm through TEM that increases up to ~ 85 nmand isdependent on the annealing temperature. TEM micrograph reveals that the grains of sample are spherical in shape. (TEM) analysis confirmed the X-ray results.The particle size of stannic substituted lithium ferrite fine particle obtained from the XRD using Scherrer equation.Magneticmeasurements obtained from lake shore’s vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), saturation magnetization ofordered LiFe5O8 was found to be (57.829 emu/g) which was lower than disordered LiFe5O8(62.848 emu/g).Theinterplay between superexchange interactions of Fe3+ ions at A and B sublattices gives rise to ferrimagnetic ordering of magnetic moments,with a high Curie-Weiss temperature (TCW ~ 900 K).

Zinc-leaching residue (ZLR) is a strongly acidic hazardous waste; it has poor stability, high heavy metal levels, and releases toxic elements into the environment. ZLR has potential as a valuable resource, because it contains elevated levels of zinc and silver. In this paper, the recovery of zinc (Zn) and silver (Ag) from ZLR wastes from zinc hydrometallurgy workshops using water leaching followed by flotation was studied. During water leaching experiments, the zinc and copper recovery rates were 38% and 61%, respectively. Thereafter, various flotation testing parameters were optimized and included grinding time, reagent dosages, pulp density, flotation time, and type of adjuster. Experimental results demonstrated this flotation method successfully recycled Ag and Zn. A froth product containing more than 9256.41 g/t Ag and 12.26% Zn was produced from the ZLR with approximately 80.32% Ag and 42.88% Zn recoveries. The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) results indicated the water-leaching flotation process not only recycled valuable metals such as zinc and silver in zinc-containing hazardous wastes but lowered the hazardous waste levels to those of general wastes and recycled wastes in an efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly way.

The main aim of this paper is to present analyses of temporal variations of particulate matter in Bor (Serbia) influenced by copper production at the Copper Smelter Complex Bor. Particulate emissions are of concern because the presence of fine particles (PM2.5 - particles with diametar less than 2.5 ?m) and ultrafine particles (PM0.1 - particles with diametar less than 0.1 ?m) assume higher risk for human health. Such particles can penetrate deeper into respiratory organs and, at the same time, a probability for such penetration and deposition in the respiratory system is greater. The analysis is based on comparison of SO2 and PM measurements at several locations in the area of Bor town in the close vicinity of Copper Smelter. PM concentrations were highly correlated with sulfur dioxide and inversely correlated with local wind speed during pollution episodes. Presented results indicate that the dominant source of coarse and fine particles in Bor town is the Copper Smelting Complex Bor. The most significant factors for particulate matter distribution are meteorological parameters of wind speed and direction. It was found that exceeding of daily limit values of concentrations of PM10 (50 ?g/m3) usually occurs due to very high concentrations in a period of several hours during the day.

Creating a gradient of properties in a single material is challenging for scientists and engineers. For this purpose, such methods are used as: welding of steels of different chemical compositions, joint rolling of steel sheets, sealing and surfacing of various kinds. All of these methods have a big disadvantage: under load, the material is destroyed in the weakest place - the place where the layers join. In this article, the authors proposed to obtain a gradient of properties in steel castings due to the introduction of dispersed particles of tungsten carbide into the crystallizing melt during centrifugal casting. The particles introduced serve as crystallization centers, accelerate the crystallization process and increase certain types of mechanical properties (hardness, microhardness, tensile strength). In addition, the particles of tungsten carbide have high hardness; therefore, in the structure of the workpieces they serve as reinforcing elements that strengthen the structure. The uneven distribution of particles in the preform being formed is possible for two reasons: tungsten carbide has a density greater than the melt, and besides, centrifugal force acts on them. The article describes the experiment and its results on the production of metal preforms with a gradient of properties. The introduced particles significantly influenced the macro-structure of the prepared castings. The article also presents the results of a study of the effect of particles on the hardness and micro-hardness of the resulting blanks.

Abstract In this study the effect of mixtures of copper slag and flotation tailings from copper mine Bor, Serbia on the flotation results of copper recovery and flotation kinetics parameters in a batch flotation cell has been investigated. By simultaneous adding old flotation tailings in the ball mill at the rate of 9%, it is possible to increase copper recovery for about 20%. These results are compared with obtained copper recovery of pure copper slag. The results of batch flotation test were fitted by MatLab software for modeling the first-order flotation kinetics in order to determine kinetics parameters and define an optimal model of the flotation kinetics. Six kinetic models are tested on the batch flotation copper recovery against flotation time. All models showed good correlation, however the modified Kelsall model provided the best fit.

In this study, industrial lithium-ion battery (LIB) waste was treated by a froth flotation process, which allowed selective separation of electrode particles from metallic-rich fractions containing Cu and Al. In the flotation experiments, recovery rates of ~80 and 98.8% for the cathode active elements (Co, Ni, Mn) and graphite were achieved, respectively. The recovered metals from the flotation fraction were subsequently used in high-temperature Cu-slag reduction. In this manner, the possibility of using metallothermic reduction for Cu-slag reduction using Al-wires from LIB waste as the main reductant was studied. The behavior of valuable (Cu, Ni, Co, Li) and hazardous metals (Zn, As, Sb, Pb), as a function of time as well as the influence of Cu-slag-to-spent battery (SB) ratio, were investigated. The results showcase a suitable process to recover copper from spent batteries and industrial Cu-slag. Cu-concentration decreased to approximately 0.3 wt.% after 60 min reduction time in all samples where Cu/Al-rich LIB waste fraction was added. It was also showed that aluminothermic reduction is effective for removing hazardous metals from the slag. The proposed process is also capable of recovering Cu, Co, and Ni from both Cu-slag and LIB waste, resulting in a secondary Cu slag that can be used in various applications.


Copper slag is a rough blasting grit or a by-product acquired by the process of copper smelting and refining. These copper slags are recycled for copper recovery. In this paper, we analysed copper slag’s feasibility and evaluate its total competence in M25 grade concrete. In this observation, a concrete mixture is applied with copper slag as a fine aggregate ranging from 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% respectively. The strength of copper slag’s implementation is accomplished on the basis of concrete’s flexural strength, compressive strength and splitting tensile strength. From the obtained results, in concrete 40% percentage of copper slag is used as sand replacement. On 28 days, the modulus of elasticity increased up to 32%, the compressive strength increased up to 34% and flexural strength is increased to 6.2%. From this experiment, it is proved technically that replacing sand using copper slag as a fine mixture in M25 grade concrete.

Abstract Copper production by heap leaching, coupled with solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW), is a well-established technology, with an annual output of about 3.7 million tonnes (Mt) of copper metal. Ores presently amenable to copper heap leaching include copper oxides and secondary copper sulfides. Most copper deposits amenable to acid sulfate heap leaching result from supergene processes within porphyry copper systems, although copper heap leaching has been applied to sandstone and shale-hosted deposits, among others. Copper heap leaching is a rate-dependent process sensitive to copper mineralogy (copper oxides > secondary sulfides > hypogene sulfides), driven by the pH of the leach solution, the activity of ferric iron (Fe3+ (aq)) dissolved in the leach solution, and temperature. Acid consumption, a principal operating cost item, depends on the pH of the leach solution; the presence of reactive gangue minerals, notably carbonates, Ca plagioclase, pyroxene, Fe-rich amphibole, and olivine; and the cumulative surface area of material in the heap. There are three basic approaches to commercial copper heap leaching—run-of-mine, dedicated pad, and on-off pad leaching, with variables that include crushing, acid/ferric agglomeration, solution application rate, and leach solution pH. These approaches affect copper leach kinetics, overall copper recovery, acid consumption, and capital and operating costs. A successful copper heap leach evaluation program requires a systematic approach, beginning with geologic mapping, then drilling and hydraulic and metallurgical testing, and concluding with financial analysis, engineering, and permitting. As geologists are the unique party in the process, with a thorough understanding of the overall deposit geology, including ore and gangue mineralogy, the domains that comprise the deposit, and the geochemistry of leaching, they must remain fully involved in the project throughout the evaluation. At the outset, geologists must manage the drilling program and define the grade-mineral domains. Later, they must participate in the metallurgical and hydraulic testing programs, including the evaluation of test results; then, during financial modeling, they must collaborate with all of the other specialists.

To solve the problem of increasing the efficiency of cleaning the exhaust air of painting chambers from fine particles, a separation device with elements of a square and rectangular shape has been developed and described by the principles of its operation. A method for calculating the design dimensions of the developed separation device is presented. Different versions of the height of the separation zone are considered, depending on the size of dispersed particles. It is shown that the device is able to capture particles smaller than 10 microns with an efficiency close to 100 %, provided they adhere to the walls. The peculiarity of the design of the separation device is that a set of small-diameter vortices is created, in which the flow regime is close to laminar, and to achieve large values of centrifugal force, it is not necessary to create high speeds in the crevices.
