BACKGROUND: Smartphone usage has become more common in daily life, and in certain situations, this may lead to addictive behavior. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the relationship between smartphone addiction and musculoskeletal problems and cognitive flexibility in university students. METHODS: Smartphone addiction was evaluated with the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS), the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) was used to evaluate musculoskeletal symptoms, and pain was measured with Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Cognitive flexibility was assessed with the Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (CFI). RESULTS: A significant correlation was found between SAS total score and musculoskeletal problems in the upper back, lower back, hip and feet (p <  0.05, r = 0.11; r = 0.16; r = 0.11; r = 0.13, r = 0.14). Smartphone addiction showed a significant positive correlation with neck pain, right hand pain and right arm pain (p <  0.05, r = 0.13; r = 0.17; r = 0.14). There was a significant negative correlation between CFI total score and SAS total score (p <  0.05, r = – 0.13). CONCLUSIONS: Smartphone addiction is associated with musculoskeletal problems, pain and cognitive flexibility in university students. Encouraging an active lifestyle, physical activity, ergonomic arrangements, individual behavioral modification as well as environmental regulations and policies may eliminate the negative effects of smartphone addiction.

  El objetivo fue analizar las relaciones entre el uso del smartphone y el tiempo dedicado a la práctica de AF, así como la influencia de un estilo de vida activo y las distintas dimensiones del autoconcepto en estudiantes universitarios. La muestra estuvo compuesta por universitarios del Grado en Educación Primaria e Infantil de la Universidad de Jaén: 253 estudiantes, 58.1% mujeres (N=147) y 41.9% hombres (N=106) con edades comprendidas entre 18 y 42 años (M=21.39 ±3.27). Se trata de un estudio cuantitativo-descriptivo de corte transversal que utiliza para la recogida de datos tres cuestionarios (CERM, Autoconcepto Forma 5 “AF-5” y uno de elaboración propia). Los resultados mostraron que el 44.6% de los universitarios jienenses dedica a la práctica de AF menos de 3 horas semanales y solo un 34% más de 3. Con respecto a la relación entre AF y autoconcepto, solo se han encontrado diferencias en las dimensiones emocional y física. Abstract: The aim was to analyze the relationships between smartphone use and time spent on PA, as well as the influence of an active lifestyle and the different dimensions of self-concept in university students. The sample was composed of university students from the Primary and Infant Education Degree of the University of Jaén: 253 students, 58.1% women (N=147) and 41.9% men (N=106) between the ages of 18 and 42 (M=21.39 ±3.27). This is a cross-sectional quantitative-descriptive study that uses three questionnaires (CERM, Self-Concept Form 5 "AF-5" and one of its own making) for data collection. The results showed that 44.6% of university students in Jaén dedicated less than 3 hours per week to PA practice and only 34% more than 3. With respect to the relationship between PA and self-concept, only differences were found in the emotional and physical dimensions.

Depending on the developing technology, individuals started to pursue a less active lifestyle. The sedentary lifestyle has brought along many health problems. One of these health problems is obesity. Awareness of obesity is important for individual health. One of the applications that can be implemented to cope with obesity is exercise. This study aims to analyze the relationship between university students’ exercise addiction and obesity awareness. Therefore, 249 university students (132 males, 117 females) participated in the study. In the study, the “Exercise Addiction Scale” developed by Tekkurşun-Demir, Hazar and Cicioğlu (2018) and the “Obesity Awareness” scale developed by Allen (2011) and adapted to Turkish culture by Kafkas and Özen (2014) were used as data collection tools. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistical methods, t-test for independent groups and one-way variance (ANOVA). Correlation test was employed to determine the relationship between exercise addiction and obesity awareness. As a result of the research, it was determined that students’ awareness of exercise addiction and obesity was at a moderate level. It was determined that exercise addiction had a significant effect on average the number of steps taken per day. Besides, it was determined that there was a low level of a positive relationship between exercise addiction and obesity awareness.

Abstract. Music video (MV) content is frequently measured using researcher descriptions. This study examines subjective or viewers’ notions of sex and violence. 168 university students watched 9 mainstream MVs. Incidence counts of sex and violence involve more mediating factors than ratings. High incidents are associated with older viewers, higher scores for Expressivity, lower scores for Instrumentality, and with video orders beginning with high sex and violence. Ratings of sex and violence are associated with older viewers and lower scores for Instrumentality. For sex MVs, inexperienced viewers reported higher incidents and ratings. Because MVs tend to be sexier but less violent than TV and film, viewers may also use comparative media standards to evaluate emotional content MVs.

The current study proposes and refines the Appraisals in Personality (AIP) model in a multilevel investigation of whether appraisal dimensions of emotion predict differences in state neuroticism and extraversion. University students (N = 151) completed a five-factor measure of trait personality, and retrospectively reported seven situations from the previous week, giving state personality and appraisal ratings for each situation. Results indicated that: (a) trait neuroticism and extraversion predicted average levels of state neuroticism and extraversion respectively, and (b) five of the examined appraisal dimensions predicted one, or both of the state neuroticism and extraversion personality domains. However, trait personality did not moderate the relationship between appraisals and state personality. It is concluded that appraisal dimensions of emotion may provide a useful taxonomy for quantifying and comparing situations, and predicting state personality.

Abstract. The need for efficient personality inventories has led to the wide use of short instruments. The corresponding items often contain multiple, potentially conflicting descriptors within one item. In Study 1 ( N = 198 university students), the reliability and validity of the TIPI (Ten-Item Personality Inventory) was compared with the reliability and validity of a modified TIPI based on items that rephrased each two-descriptor item into two single-descriptor items. In Study 2 ( N = 268 university students), we administered the BFI-10 (Big Five Inventory short version) and a similarly modified version of the BFI-10 without two-descriptor items. In both studies, reliability and construct validity values occasionally improved for separated multi-descriptor items. The inventories with multi-descriptor items showed shortcomings in some factors of the TIPI and the BFI-10. However, the other scales worked comparably well in the original and modified inventories. The limitations of short personality inventories with multi-descriptor items are discussed.

Acceptance of Cosmetic Surgery Among British Female University Students

Although patients of cosmetic surgery are increasingly ethnically diverse, previous studies have not examined ethnic differences in attitudinal dispositions toward cosmetic surgery. In the present study, 751 British female university students from three ethnic groups (Caucasians, South Asians, and African Caribbeans) completed measures of acceptance of cosmetic surgery, body appreciation, self-esteem, and demographic variables. Initial between-group analyses showed that Caucasians had lower body appreciation and self-esteem than Asian and African Caribbean participants. Importantly, Caucasians had higher acceptance of cosmetic surgery than their ethnic minority counterparts, even after controlling for body appreciation, self-esteem, age, and body mass index. Further analyses showed that ethnicity accounted for a small proportion of the variance in acceptance of cosmetic surgery, with body appreciation and self-esteem emerging as stronger predictors. Possible reasons for ethnic differences in acceptance of cosmetic surgery are discussed in Conclusion.
