Multi-scale evaluation of the rheological and mechanical properties of asphalt binder has substantial importance in understanding the binder’s micro- and macro-scale properties. This study compares the macro- and micro-scale mechanistic properties of asphalt binders. Test samples used in this study include performance grade binders (PG 64-22) from two different sources along with their modified counterparts. The modifiers include polyphosphoric acid (PPA), styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), a combination of SBS and PPA, and reclaimed asphalt pavement. To achieve the goal of this study, atomic force microscope technology was utilized to estimate the asphalt binder’s micro-mechanical properties (e.g., Derjaguin, Muller, Toropov modulus and deformation). On the other hand, data on the macro-scale properties—such as rutting factor (G*/sinδ), consistency and penetration—of the selected binders were analyzed and compared with the aforementioned micro-level properties. The comparative analyses indicated that the micro-mechanical properties of asphalt binders followed a linear trend with the macro-scale properties. The findings of this study are expected to help researchers and pavement professionals in modeling asphalt materials when multi-scale effects are deemed to be necessary.

Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is preheated to 120 °C or lower in hot central plant recycling due to specification and equipment limitations. However, the insufficient activation of reclaimed asphalt (RA) caused by low preheating temperature may affect the final properties of reclaimed asphalt mixtures (RAM) and lead to insufficient utilization of RA binder. This study evaluated the influence of preheating temperature and aging of RA binder on binder activation by producing specimens with 100% RAP. The volumetric and mechanical properties of specimens were analyzed to reflect the effect of activation. The results indicate that preheating temperature has a significant impact on the activation of RA binder. Regardless of the source of RAP, RA binder can be highly activated at 180 °C, while the degree of activation decreases significantly at 120 °C. By using an artificial RAP with different degrees of aging, the aging of RA binder is found to be harmful to activation only when the preheating temperature is low (such as 120 °C). Hence, if the equipment is capable of doing so, it is better to raise the preheating temperature of RAP to improve the activation of RA binder, especially for binder with a higher degree of aging.

Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) is a dredging pavement material using Cold Milling Machine. The application of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement is increased year by year. Due to the increasing application of RAP year by year which implicates environment condition, especially in damaging natural resources, the research on material used in RAP needs to be conducted, so RAP can be optimally utilized. To achieve optimal performance, data of RAP characteristics reviewed from microstructural analysis is necessary. The objective of this research is to obtain the characteristics of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement. The method used was literary study based on previous research. Material tests used were XRF, SEM and FTIR. The object of study was RAP material taken from national road Waru Sidoarjo. The major compositions of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement obtained were Kaolin, Lithium, Tetraborate, Dextrin. SEM graphics showed the morphological and surface texture of RAP. FTIR graphic presented the functional group of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement showing O-H C-O acid in the peak of graphic. From XRD result, the major compounds of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement obtained were Calcium, Sodium, Aluminum, Silicate.
