A species of Xyloryctid moth bred from larvae feeding on the leaves of tea (Camellia sinensis) in Hong Kong is described as new and is named Neospastis sinensis sp.n. The species is differentiated from the three other known representatives of the genus, and also from Synchalara rhombota (Meyr.), which is a pest of tea in India, and S. rhizograpta Meyr., which was originally described from China. Illustrations of both sexes of the adult and genitalia and of N. sinensis are given.

The aphid genus Aulacophoroides Eastop and Hille Ris Lambers is reviewed. Aulacophoroides millettiae sp. nov. is described from Millettia sp. in Hong Kong, China. A key to the described species of Aulacophoroides is provided. The type specimens studied are deposited in the Zoological Museum, Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China and the Natural History Museum, London, U.K.

Many new species of Typhlodromus were described in recent years and these can readily be assigned to the species groups established by Chant (in press). Recently I received some slides of mites collected by Dr. Stanley Flanders, Citrus Experiment Station, Riverside, California, in Hong Kong in 1953. These mites are of the subgenus Typhlodromus as defined by Chant (1957), of a hitherto undescribed species that does not fall into any of the groups listed and that is of particular importance to those interested in the systematics of the Phytoseiidae.

Sand bubbler crabs of the genus Scopimera are common on sandy shores in East Asia yet the taxonomy of the species remains unclear. Scopimera globosa De Haan, 1835, the type species, was described from Japanese specimens and also occurs in Korea and China. Scopimera tuberculata Stimpson, 1858, described from Japan, has been regarded a junior synonym of S. globosa, but the types had long been lost. Some workers have considered the two taxa distinct and S. tuberculata has been recorded from South China. In the present study, we confirm using male gonopod morphology and molecular analysis, that the early records of S. tuberculata from Hong Kong and S. globosa from Taiwan are in fact S. intermedia Balss, 1934. The present study regards S. tuberculata as a subjective junior synonym to S. globosa. A new species, Scopimera ryukyuensis sp. nov. from the Ryukyus, is identified and described herein. The new species is close to S. globosa but can be separated by carapace characters. The mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene revealed basepair (bp) difference between the new species and other Scopimera spp. to be at the interspecific level, at least 28 bp (4.3%).

Abstract The current understanding of the hexapodid crab fauna from Hong Kong is limited. Trawl surveys of the subtidal macrobenthos since 2012 obtained four species of Hexapodidae: Hexalaughlia orientalis (Rathbun, 1909), Hexapinus simplex Rahayu & Ng, 2014, Mariaplax chenae Rahayu & Ng, 2014 and M. exigua sp. nov. These species are illustrated, and the new species is described and compared with congeners in East Asia.

The adult male, female, immature stages, and egg of a new species of whitefly, Lipaleyrodes emiliae, are described from Taiwan and Hong Kong. The species has been found commonly on Emilia sonchifolia (Asteraceae). Scanning electron micrographs, photographs and drawings are included with descriptions of immature stages and adults. The immatures and adults of L. emiliae are compared with those of Bemisia tabaci.

The anthocorid Montandoniola moraguesi (Puton), an oligophagous predator of thrips, is widely used as a biological agent. It was introduced in 1964 from the Philippine Islands to control the Cuban laurel thrips (Gynaikothrips ficorum) in Bermuda, and then in Hawaii and other localities. Examination of specimens from various parts of the world, and a study of type specimens, indicate that several species have been confused since the 1960’s under the name Montandoniola moraguesi (Puton, 1896). The present paper brings: (1) a redefinition of M. moraguesi; (2) the restoration and redefinition of two species erroneously synonymized with M. moraguesi: M. thripodes Bergroth, 1916 and M. pictipennis (Esaki, 1931); (3) and the description of a new species, M. confusa sp. nov., from Guadeloupe. Dorsal habitus views and illustrations of the metathoracic scent gland area and male and female genitalia are provided for each species. M. moraguesi seems to be restricted to the Mediterranean region and Africa. M. thripodes and M. pictipennis are known only by their type material described from Hong-Kong and Japan, respectively. M. confusa sp. nov. appears to be a widely distributed species: discovered in Guadeloupe, its presence is confirmed in Hawaii, USA, Bermuda, and Australia. Literature record indicates, apparently, that the species has often been confused with M. moraguesi and it is likely that the species was used – under this name – for biological control in several parts of the world.

AbstractThe aphid genus Tinocallis Matsumura is revised on a worldwide basis. Notes on its taxonomic position and evolutionary history and a key for the 21 species are presented. Tinocallis ussuriensis Pashtshenko and T. nevskyi lianchengensis Zhang and Qiao are proposed as synonyms of T. takachihoensis, and T. sapporoensis Higuchi is proposed as a synonym of T. nikkoensis Higuchi, T. allozelkowae Zhang and Zhong as a synonym of T. viridis (Takahashi), and T. magnoliae AK Ghosh and Raychaudhuri as a synonym of T. insularis (Takahashi). Tinocallis distinctus MR Ghosh, AK Ghosh and Raychaudhuri is returned to the subgenus Tinocallis s.s. from the subgenus Quednaucallis Chakrabarti. A lectotype designation was made for T. viridis (Takahashi). Tinocallis dalbergicolasp.nov. from Dalbergia hancei Benth. (Fabaceae) in Hong Kong is described and illustrated. It is closely related to T. caryaefoliae (Davis) and T. himalayensis AK Ghosh, MR Ghosh and Raychaudhuri, but has much longer antennae and longer spinal body processes. It also differs from the former species by the smooth mesonotum and from the latter species in having the forewing hyaline and with a complete radial sector.
