Summary A new species of free-living marine nematode, Diplolaimella ariakensis n. sp., is described from a muddy tidal flat of the Ariake Sea, southern Japan. Diplolaimella ariakensis n. sp. differs from its congeners by the following: presence of ocelli, absence of denticles in the buccal cavity, a long tail (11-14 cloacal body diam., c = 3.2-4.0 in male, 17-21 anal body diam., c = 2.9-3.4 in female), spicules as long as 1.4-1.8 cloacal body diam., gubernaculum 0.4-0.5 cloacal body diam. long with a dorsocaudal apophysis 0.5-0.7 cloacal body diam. long, presence of a precloacal supplement, absence of postcloacal papillae, presence of seven pairs of body pores in male, and the anterior position of the vulva (V = 43-46). A dichotomous key to Diplolaimella species is provided. Almost full-length 18S rRNA and partial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene sequences were determined for D. ariakensis n. sp. A maximum likelihood tree of 18S sequences supported a close relationship between D. ariakensis n. sp. and D. dievengatensis.

Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) incidences in Indonesian waters were increasingly occurred from time to time. Extensive and continous studies in this field are needed to be done in more areas in the country. This objective of this present survey were to determine the occurrence of potential toxic and harmful marine microalgae in Lombok, to reveal the diversity of marine microalgae found in the area, and to give some information on the occurrence of HAB phytoplankton in Lombok island. Plankton samples were taken from six stations in Lembar bay, Lombok on February, 2007. This survey found 23 marine microalgae species and two of those were potentially harmful and toxic, namely Dinophysis caudata and Gymnodinium catenatum. Four species, such as Ceratium spp, Dinophysis miles, Prorocentrum gracile, and P micans, were noted to be harmful though so far no report on adverse effect caused by these microalgae in the area. Diatom Chaetoceros spp were the most abundant phytoplankton in almost all of the sampling areas and followed by Ceratium furca and Protoperidinium sp.

This study focuses on the synchronous blooms of the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi and three dinoflagellates Prorocentrum micans, Ceratium furca var. furca and Ceratium fusus var. seta observed between 7 June and 11 July 2003 in the Dardanelles. An analysis of the vertical distribution of the E. huxleyi population size with respect to various environmental parameters was discussed. Additionally, inorganic nutrients and phytoplankton interactions were investigated in relation to the bloom conditions and hydrography of the Dardanelles. The algal bloom started in nearby Izmit Bay (eastern end of the Sea of Marmara) in early June, then quickly spread through the Sea of Marmara and continued until mid-July. Thermal stratification was observed between different water masses at the time of sampling. During the bloom period, cell density of E. huxleyi ranged from 3.58 × 107 to 2.55 × 108 cells l−1 in the superficial layer. Prorocentrum micans was the second most-abundant species and the cell numbers ranged from 1.0 × 106 cells l−1 to 3.3 × 106 cells l−1. Other abundant species in this area included C. furca var. furca and C. fusus var. seta.
