The aim of this study is to research the mediational role of smartphone addiction on relationship between nomophobia and aggression level of university students. The data collected through the convenience samples over the Internet has reached a wider audience. The study group consisted of 307 university students. Smartphone Addiction Scale Short Form, Buss Perry Aggression Scale and Nomophobia Scale were used during the research process. In addition, Relational survey method used, and mediation model of Baron and Kenny’s was used to analyze the mediation effect of smartphone. Smartphone usage is related to nomophobia and anger. Partial mediation effect of smartphone addiction was proved among nomophobia and anger. On the relation between aggression and nomophobia, the smartphone indirect effect value is %6. The increasing use of smartphone among young people is creating negative effects and is an important public health problem in many countries. Smartphone abuse and addiction may cause physical and psychological disorders among users. However, the awarenes on this issue has been inadequate due to lacking of evidence. Objectives: To describe the current situation of smartphone using among students at highschools and universities in Hue city and to examine the relationship between smartphone using and sleep disturbances and psychological disstress among participants. Methods: A cross-sectional study with a randomly selected sample of 1,150 students at highschools and universities in Hue city. SAS-SV scale was used to evaluate phone addiction status, K10 scale was used for psychological distress assessment and PSQI scale was used to examine the sleep quality. Results: The proportion of students at highschools and universities having smartphones was 78.0%. The rate of smartphone addiction among high school students was 49.1% and that among university students was 43.7%. There was 57.3% of high school students had poor sleep quality, and that of university students was 51.6%. There was a statistically significant association between smartphone addiction and sleep disturbances and psychological disstress among participants (p <0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of smartphone addiction among students at highschools and universities is alarming and is related to sleep disturbances and psychological disstress among participants. There is a strong call to develop intervention to help students to aware and manage the use of smartphone effectively.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common recurrent functional gastrointestinal disorder that impacts on patients physically and mentally. Studies on IBS have focused on adults, yet few studies have examined IBS among female university students. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of IBS for female university students and its related factors. Using a cross-sectional study design, a total of 2520 female university students were recruited in southern Taiwan. The structured questionnaires, including the Rome III IBS diagnostic questionnaire, IBS symptom severity scale, Perceived Stress Scale, and World Health Organization Quality of Life BREF questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF) were used for data collection. A total of 1894 female students complete the questionnaires. The response rate was 75.15%. The results indicated 193 female students with IBS and the prevalence of IBS was 10.1%. IBS female students had higher levels of stress and lower QOL than non-IBS female students. The risk factors for female university students developing IBS were dysmenorrhea, food avoidance, class absenteeism, and the lower physical domain of QOL. It is advised to consider these factors when providing students with counselling and relevant services in the expectation of alleviating their IBS symptoms, reducing the incidence rate of IBS, and further improving their QOL.

Abstract Objective: There has been increased attention in recent years to mental health, quality of life, stress and academic performance among university students, and the possible influence of learning styles. Brief reliable questionnaires are useful in large-scale multivariate research designs, such as the largely survey-based research on well-being and academic performance of university students. The objective of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of a briefer version of the 39-item Adelaide Diagnostic Learning Inventory. Results: In two survey samples - medical and physiotherapy students - a 21-item version Adelaide Diagnostic Learning Inventory - Brief (ADLIB) was shown to have the same factor structure as the parent instrument, and the factor structure of the brief instrument was found to generalise across students of medicine and physiotherapy. Sub-scale reliability estimations were in the order of magnitude of the parent instrument. Sub-scale inter-correlations, inter-factor congruence coefficients, and correlations between ADLIB sub-scale scores and several external measures provide support support for the construct and criterion validity of the instrument.
