In this article, the analysis of the acoustic path during the ultrasonic pulse echo testing of the rail head in production is carried out. The influence of the parameters of the applied piezoelectric transducers on the distribution of sensitivity for the sounding scheme used in the existing installations is estimated and the real sensitivity of detecting defects of the «non-metallic inclusion» type is estimated.

Abstract The needle probe test, as a thermal conductivity measurement method, has become very popular in recent years. In the present study, the efficiency of this methodology, for the case of composite materials, is investigated based on the numerical simulations. The material under study is a two-phase composite with periodic microstructure of “matrix-inclusion” type. Two-scale analysis, incorporating micromechanics approach, is performed. First, the effective thermal conductivity of the composite considered is found by the solution of the appropriate boundary value problem stated for the single unit cell. Next, numerical simulations of the needle probe test are carried out. In this case, two different locations of the measuring sensor are considered. It is shown that the “equivalent” conductivity, derived from the probe test, is strongly affected by the location of the sensor. Moreover, comparing the results obtained for different scales, one can notice that the “equivalent” conductivity cannot be interpreted as the effective one for the composites considered. Hence, a crude approximation of the effective property is proposed based on the volume fractions of constituents and the equivalent conductivities derived from different sensor locations.

Erythrocytes of PEN-positive Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus harengus) were examined to determine their ultrastructure. Cytoplasmic inclusions were of two types when observed under the electron microscope. The first type (type I) appeared coarsely granular, electron dense, round, and up to 1.5 μm in diameter. Virions were closely associated with this type of inclusion. The second type of inclusion (type II) had approximately the same appearance as the surrounding cytoplasm, from which it was separated by a discrete membrane, and was variable in size. Virions were not intimately associated with type II inclusions. Virions occurred singly or in clusters within the cytoplasm or in association with type I inclusions and were hexagonal and 145 nm in diameter. Virions were composed of a rigid hexagonal capsid 8 nm wide, a lighter 16-nm region, and a core 100 nm in diameter. The virus of PEN is presumptively classified as an Iridovirus. ABSTRACT Cells of the entomopathogenic bacterium Photorhabdus luminescens contain two types of morphologically distinct crystalline inclusion proteins. The larger rectangular inclusion (type 1) and a smaller bipyramid-shaped inclusion (type 2) were purified from cell lysates by differential centrifugation and isopycnic density gradient centrifugation. Both structures are composed of protein and are readily soluble at pH 11 and 4 in 1% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and in 8 M urea. Electrophoretic analysis reveals that each inclusion is composed of a single protein subunit with a molecular mass of 11,000 Da. The proteins differ in amino acid composition, protease digestion pattern, and immunological cross-reactivity. The protein inclusions are first visible in the cells at the time of late exponential growth. Western blot analyses showed that the proteins appeared in cells during mid- to late exponential growth. When at maximum size in stationary-phase cells, the proteins constitute 40% of the total cellular protein. The protein inclusions are not used during long-term starvation of the cells and were not toxic when injected into or fed toGalleria mellonella larvae.


This chapter focuses on creating a vision statement that supports a service delivery model within the field of special education. The chapter discusses the importance of shaping the vision and the impact it may have on the student, school, families, and society as a whole. Components as well as examples of currently used vision statements are included in this chapter, along with a discussion about incorporating a school's vision statement into its professional development program. The chapter concludes with a reflection on ensuring that the needs of students are met while at the same time being cognizant of the fact that standards-based instruction dominates the Individualized Education Plan and service delivery models help shape the vision for all students as more and more students with special needs are being placed into a full-inclusion type of educational environment.

Using rare earth metals as deoxidizers is an efficient way of getting highly deoxidized copper melt required for certain bronzes production. Thermodynamic modeling of phase equilibria in the Cu–La–O system in the temperature range of 1100–1300 °С was performed to assess a possible depth of copper melt deoxidation with lanthanum, and also to determine the resulting oxide phases. During the experimental part of the work, Cu–La–O system metal samples were melted and then studied with the JEOL JSM 6460-LV scanning electron microscope equipped with the energy-dispersive spectrometer providing electron microprobe analysis to specify formed nonmetallic inclusion type.

This work is concerned with a versatile and efficient model for estimating the effective moduli of isotropic composites consisting of isotropic phases whose microstructure may be of matrix-inclusion type, disordered or intermediate. This extended version of generalized self-consistent model (GSCM) is built by inserting a composite sphere embedded in an infinite unknown effective medium has the core made of the unknown effective medium and coated by the constituent phases. The volume fraction of the constituent phases in this composite sphere is the characteristic parameter of the relevant microstructure. By imposing the an energy equivalency condition, the equations thus obtained to estimate the effective bulk and shear moduli involve the microstructural parameter which turns out to be capable of describing in some sense how far a microstructure is from the host matrix/inclusion morphology

✓ Specimens of human choroid plexus, obtained during craniotomy, were examined by light and electron microscopy. Inclusions were observed within the cytoplasm of the choroidal epithelial cells, and could be classified into three types on the basis of morphological characteristics. Each inclusion type predominated in a particular age group. In choroid plexuses of older humans, filaments from 60 to 150 Å in diameter, with no apparent periodicity, were noted circumjacent to the intracytoplasmic inclusions.
