In this paper, we describe the process of an often experienced, but rarely documented, process of shaping a new research focus. Specifically, we report our initial work in planning a collaborative research initiative between educational institutions and libraries in Canada and Ethiopia. Using multiple qualitative methods for collecting a variety of information from different sources, and employing hermeneutic perspectives to begin to understand the context and challenges of literacy education and libraries in Ethiopia, we conclude with a framework for research questions centered on expanding basic literacy to digital literacy and the role of libraries in that endeavour.

AbstractThe willingness to trade off large but ill-defined future consequences for immediate work characterizes social problems such as environmental sustainability. This commentary argues that important applications of behavioral models of self-control are being overlooked in the experimental literature. Tying the experimental literature to longterm health, environmental, and other risks makes the experimental work more germane, and raises new research questions for experimental modeling.

The job performance is vital phenomenon in the context of education sector as educational institutions might be able to obtain desired ranking only when the employees are motivated to show their best performance. There are many hindrances which are responsible to affect the employees’ performance and institutions wherein job stress is more critical. The stressed employees are not only burnout form their job but also effect their level of the performance. In this situation, “the role of emotional intelligence” is vital in determining the employees’ attitude to show their best performance. The data was collected from faculty member hailing from higher institutions and analyzed through statistical procedures to find answers of research questions. The results are significant and expected to be valuable to management of the higher institutions in revisiting their policies concerning the research issues under considerations. Some recommendations have also been extracted from the results of the study.

Abstract Digitalization and the momentous role being assumed by data are commonly viewed as pervasive phenomena whose impact is felt in all aspects of society and the economy. Design activity is by no means immune from this trend, and the relationship between digitalization and design is decades old. However, what is the current impact of this ‘data revolution’ on design? How will the design activity change? What are the resulting research questions of interest to academics? What are the main challenges for firms and for educational institutions having to cope with this change? The paper provides a comprehensive conceptual framework, based on recent literature and anecdotal evidence from the industry. It identifies three main streams: namely the consequences on designers, the consequences on design processes and the role of methods for data analytics. In turn, these three streams lead to implications at individual, organizational and managerial level, and several questions arise worthy of defining future research agendas. Moreover, the paper introduces relational diagrams depicting the interactions between the objects and the actors involved in the design process and suggests that what is occurring is by no means a simple evolution but a paradigmatic shift in the way artefacts are designed.

Mapping the Fields: Geographies of Knowledge Production, is ahumanities experiment, exploring fieldworks of the nineteenth century. By studyingfieldworks, the project investigates production and circulation of knowledge, and the role of space and place in these practices. Furthermore, and that is theconcern of this article, Mapping the Fields is one possible answer to an ongoingdiscussion about how the building of a database, data model, and digital mapsmay be fruitful for research related to Norwegian Folklore Archives. The projectengages the general idea of mapping as a process within network relations. In thisarticle, it is argued that concepts developed in relations between geography andliterature studies are fruitful within a Culture History approach to Spatial History. The article problematizes how “the digital” stabilizes “facts” and contributes toinspiration, new research questions and new knowledge.

No modern state can exist in the long term without effective taxation. Recent research emerging from close collaboration of academics with tax authorities has shed new light on how states can build such tax capacity. Using both randomized and natural experiments, these partnerships have not only opened access to new types of data but have also stimulated new perspectives and research questions. While much of research in public finance has historically assumed that a tax in the law is a tax that is collected, exciting new research takes an empirical look inside the black box of tax administration. It addresses issues ranging from the role of information and digitalization to taxpayer behavior or to the link between taxation and citizens’ relationship to the state. This article provides a brief overview of some of this research, as well as practical advice for those interested in implementing research in partnership with tax authorities or other large public entities.

Developing a public-facing website expanded the scope of my book project about pioneer monuments by opening new research questions. As public attention turned toward controversial monuments, I reimagined the role of my website. No longer just a companion to a scholarly monograph, it became a central piece of a new, multifaceted public engagement project. I now seek to inform ongoing debates about controversial statues, and to spark conversations in locations where similar monuments have thus far been less controversial.

PurposeThis paper is aimed at examining and critically analyzing systematical literature on wine and cross-modality between the five senses. In particular, the researchers want to highlight the role of multisensory analysis on wine marketing and consumer behavior studies.Design/methodology/approachThis paper is based on a systematic review of literature conducted on peer-reviewed journals.FindingsResults highlight how multisensory analysis of wine is a growing topic insomuch that research on this kind of topic is exploded in the last years. Nevertheless, wine and cross-modality is more analyzed on food science journals than in marketing ones.Originality/valueThe paper examines a field of research moderately explored in order to shed light to the current status of scientific studies and to propose new research questions to develop.

In this paper it is considered how data from different origins and of different qualities can be combined in order to arrive at a more complete picture of phenomena considered in empirical research. It is shown how qualitative and quantitative data can be compared in meaningful ways, and how they can be analyzed together in statistical analyses. In addition to respondent-based information registry data may be used. This makes it possible to add information that are unaffected from memory distortions, non-response problems and from social desirability bias, but registry information have their particular weaknesses that need to be taken into account. Finally aggregate-level data may be used. Although they are only second best if standing alone, aggregated data may act as contextual information that may be used for performing multi-level analyses. Finally a study on the role of social factors in the course of breast cancer as an example is described where data from different sources are combined in order to tackle complex health-related research questions.

The study provides an insight into administrative and legal aspects of licensing higher educational institutions, analyses changes in the licensing system of higher educational institutions and examines measures aimed at nhancing the role of this institution in addressing the problem of quality assurance of higher educational institutions. The author investigates the legal nature and administrative aspects of licensing in higher education and proves that licensing in higher education is an administrative procedure, which takes into account the specific nature and characteristics of the activities of an educational institution, that are stipulated by the corresponding regulatory documents. The paper determines licensing as a legal phenomenon, which means that licensing activity belongs to the system of state-executive relations, the core of which is the organizing the citizens and the legal entities’ activities in the spheres where steadfast adherence to definite requirements and certain legal behavior is expected. One of the key research questions of this paper was the ambiguity of the concept of licensing in scientific literature, which combines the norms of administrative and civil law. Social and legal functions of licensing higher education institutions with the aim of their effective functioning in social and legal environment are outlined. Further, the author identifies the characteristic features of licensing in education. This article also address the research questions of licensing in education and offers the conclusions regarding the features of licensing as a legal phenomenon. The role of licensing activity in the system of state-executive relations and its contents and constituents are determined.

The current study aims to explore the role of the Open Art Studio in encouraging university students to practice arts. It seeks to answer the following main research questions: What is the role of the Open Art Studio in enhancing university-students’ life in terms of educational, sociological and physiological aspects? The findings of the study show the importance of practicing art activities in the Open Art Studio in enhancing university-students’ life as well as analyzing the integrating role of the educational, physiological and sociological of practicing art in the Open Art Studio. This study ended with some important recommendations such as the importance of higher educational institutions in encouraging students’ participation in practicing all types of arts activities and supporting them and offering incentives, the necessity of art specialists participating at universities in planning policy of outside classrooms activities and supervising these activities according to their specializations, and allocating some time in the study timetable for practicing extracurricular activities in all university disciplines. Finally, it recommends the need to further study the difficulties behind the university students’ limited number of visits to Open Art Studios.
