(NEt4)[MesCr(CO)2N3] (1) (Mes = mesitylene), (NEt4)[TDMCr(CO)2N3] (2) (TDM = terephthalic acid dimethyl ester) and (NEt4)[CpRe(CO)2N3] (3) (Cp = η5-cyclopentadienyl) were obtained from the corresponding [AreneCr(CO)2THF] complexes and [CpRe(CO)2THF], respectively, and NEt4N3. 1 and 2 decompose above —10 °C and 3 is light sensitive. Attempts to obtain new nitrogen ligands which are unstable in free state by reacting the azido complexes with H+, Me+ and NO+, respectively, led preferably to the N2 complexes [AreneCr(CO)2N2] and [CpRe(CO)2N2], respectively, and decomposition products.
