Aim:The objective of this paper is to make comparative analysis on operational efficiency between Chinese and Indian commercial banks (CBs). Design / Research methods: Following the previous scholars’ study, two models with different sets of input and output variables have been used to show how efficiency scores vary with change in inputs and outputs. The efficiency scores are measured by using data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach. Conclusions / findings: The mean technical efficiency score of Chinese CBs is always relatively higher than the corresponding score of Indian CBs in 2012-2013, respectively. In terms of technical efficiency and pure technical efficiency, the performance of foreign banks in China is always relatively lower than that of foreign banks in India. Originality / value of the article: While many similar studies have evaluated the performance of banking industries in different countries, very few studies have evaluated the performance of banking sectors between Chinese and Indian economies. The paper would be of interest for OR scholars and practitioners in financial industry. Implications of the research (if applicable): The next step of this study could collect more samples and use Malmquist index method to conduct further study on efficiency, efficiency changing and productivity, in order to conduct further competitive power analysis on both of banking industries of China and India.

The COVID-19 epidemic has accelerated the digital economy’s pervasiveness throughout the Chinese economy, leading to a sharp rise in demand for “contactless” services in the financial industry. We examine the digital transformation of the Chinese banking industry using the DEA–Malmquist index method, supplemented by a distance function and time to compare the dynamic changes of productivity. Our paper then conducts an empirical study on the digital transformation of Chinese commercial banks based on their improvements in efficiency. We analyze banks with superior efficiency in science and technology investment and evaluate their digital maturity and digital transformation experience. Results show that digitalization investment has contributed to substantial production efficiency improvement for commercial banks; however, heterogeneity exists across banks. We further advocate a path for banks’ digital transformation based on theoretical research and empirical digital transformation experience in this area.

Purpose The issue of mounting non-performing assets (NPAs) in Indian banking industry is serious and attracting attention of academia and policy planners. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to test the hypothesis whether NPAs in Indian commercial banking have reached at alarming state where they start affecting the technical efficiency levels adversely or not. Design/methodology/approach The efficiency score have been computed using case model (model with NPAs as bad/undesirable output) vs control model (model without NPAs as bad/undesirable output) methodology under meta-frontier data envelopment analysis framework. Findings It has been noticed that the effect of NPAs on overall technical efficiency and its various components is insignificant. The comparison of the case models (i.e. model with NPAs as bad output) with the control models (i.e. model without NPAs) reveals insignificant difference in average efficiency scores and rank distribution of commercial banks. The major source of inefficiency is technology gap (i.e. structure, setup and objectives of banking) among public, domestic private and foreign private categories of banks. Practical implications Though NPAs are increasing in Indian banking industry and specifically in Indian public sector banks because of their compulsory lending to priority sector yet the banks have huge scope to extend credit to priority sector as the NPAs have not reached at alarming stage where they start affecting adversely the efficiency performance. Originality/value Given the fact that the banking penetrations, structure and objectives differ significantly across ownership, separate frontiers for each ownership (public, private and foreign banks) category has been used to evaluate the technical efficiency levels of 81 commercial banks operating in India over the period 2005 to 2013.

The study investigated the technical efficiency of the commercial banks in Zimbabwe during the period 2009–2015. The study entailed the decomposition of the technical efficiency into pure technical and scale efficiency to understand the sources of the technical inefficiency in the commercial banks in Zimbabwe. To accomplish the task, the study sampled 11 commercial banks of which 6 are domestic and the other 5 are foreign banks. The study used the data envelopment analysis method. The results of the study revealed that commercial banks in Zimbabwe are technically inefficient with an efficiency score of 82.9%. The average pure technical and scale efficiency scores were 96.6% and 85.6%, respectively. The results imply that technical inefficiency of the Zimbabwean commercial banks is mainly a result of scale inefficiency emanating from decreasing returns to scale. The deduction is that commercial banks in Zimbabwe are operating at below their optimum capacity and hence have scope to increase their operations in order to improve on technical efficiency.

This paper investigates the profit efficiency of commercial banks where the banking sector has completed more than two decade of changeover from nationalization policy to privatization and restructuring policy by employing stochastic frontier true effect and true random effect models. Intermediation approach has been used to choose input and output variables of banks. A balanced panel data of 22 commercial banks of Pakistan over the period 1995-2014 have been used for the empirical analysis. The paper found that commercial banks are on average 73% profit efficient. However foreign banks report high profit efficiency score followed private domestic banks and then state owned banks. We also compared the cost and profit efficiency of commercial banks and found that commercial banks are more cost efficient than profit efficient.

In this study the authors use a three-stage sequential technique to develop a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model for examining a bank's technical efficiency index. Internal risk and environmental risk are incorporated into this model to accommodate the well-known BASEL III Accord (required capital adequacy ratio in the financial industry) and to ensure the amount of derivatives turnover ratio is at the level defined by industry best-practices. Information is obtained from 34 Taiwanese commercial banks for the period from 2008 to 2011 following the global financial crisis. The Malmquist total factor productivity index (TFP) is also employed to measure the impact of changes in productivity on the panel data. Empirical results derived from the DEA approach show a gain in technical efficiency and scale efficiency in the industry after adjusting the slack variables when using the corrected ordinary least squares (COLS) regression model. The results indicate that commercial banks need to diversify to increase their market share when dealing with derivatives which are associated with higher risk. The Balk's Malmquisit TFP index shows a decrease in bank productivity and improvement in pure technical efficiency. In this study the authors found that after risk-adjustment there was a distinct inefficient unit decrease and but a marginal unit increase in efficiency.

This paper investigates the technical efficiency and productivity of Kazakh commercial banks over the period 2000–2013. Non-parametric approaches, namely the Data Envelopment Analysis and the Malmquist index are employed to calculate technical efficiency and productivity. In addition, a second-stage regression is also estimated to identify the determinants of efficiency. The results indicate that banks in Kazakhstan operate below their optimum levels, with larger banks being more efficient than smaller ones. The results also indicate the presence of economies of scale for banks of all sizes. The efficiency of banks is found to be significantly and positively related to profitability, capitalisation, bank size, and liquidity. The results further indicate that Kazakh banks seem to have experienced a significant productivity growth over the sample period.

The study aims to measure the technical and intertemporal efficiency and find the primary source of productivity change on top three telecommunication firms in each country of ASEAN-5 (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and Singapore) from 2010 to 2016. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) bootstrapping with 2000 iterations, DEA window, and Malmquist index are applied to calculate technical efficiency, intertemporal efficiency, and productivity change. The estimation results elucidate that, on average, the technical efficiency of firms is relatively low. On the opposite, the intertemporal efficiency results indicate that the mean efficiency score of each window is high. However, the LDW and LDP tend to be high, showing that the efficiency scores fluctuate. Taiwan has actively promoted the strategy of energy efficiency for all companies and organizations. The government has set a target of energy efficiency of 33% by 2025. This research applied DEA malmquist index to assess technical efficiency, and to reveal trends of productivity change in Taiwan energy companies. The DEA malmquist index is a distinguished research method using to measures productivity change over time period. The proposed method can be decomposed into two components, technical change and technological change. A panel data was collected from Taiwan Stock Exchange Market recorded 2008-2011. The research was illustrated with financial data of selected companies, and their productivity was carefully analyzed. The empirical results showed that the technical efficiency of five energy companies performed efficiently with the highest score of 1.000. An average technical efficiency score was pretty high with 0.938. Moreover, trend in productivity change regressed due lack of technological improvement.
