<p>The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act implemented value-based purchasing to raise the bar on quality care and patient satisfaction in healthcare facilities. The time has come to educate graduate nursing students on the reality of quality indicators and the impact that advanced practice nurses will have on these initiatives. This educational brief describes implementation of an educational session developed for graduate nursing students on VBP and the APN role. The content for the education was derived from an extensive literature review, <em>The Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing</em>, and the clinical experience of the author. The education was presented to 12 Master’s in nursing students utilizing a presentation with a pre-/post-test, followed by a question and answer session. Pre/post test scores showed an average increase in mean score of 17 points. Students’ enthusiasm indicated that the content would be of benefit to them as they transitioned to the APN role. Consistent with <em>The Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing</em>, specific to Essential III (Quality Improvement and Safety), it is recommended that current quality initiatives specific in the APN role be integrated into the curriculum.</p>

Social media are one of the most valuable management tools used by sport managers in the fulfilment of their daily tasks. However, the studies that share and analyse the impact of educational experiences that incorporate social media into sport management education for professional purposes are scarce to date. Thus, this study presents an educational innovation piloted in a sport management course where LinkedIn—the social media most associated with the professional sphere—is introduced through an experiential learning methodology, as a driver of students’ career development and as a tool to keep up to date and interact with the sport industry. To assess the learning outcomes, a new scale was developed and tested. A total of 90 Spanish undergraduate sport management students (M = 22.71; SD = 3.84) participated in the study, partaking in a pre-test and a post-test. Regarding the results linked to the testing of the scale, the statistical analysis reflects the scale’s two-dimensional nature, explaining 68.78% of the variance, presenting good psychometric properties (α = 0.95). On the other hand, significant increases in all the scale items between the two measures were obtained, with large effects size in the two dimensions (Cohen’s d ≥ 0.80). Therefore, it is concluded that LinkedIn can help to develop the professional profile of sport management students, Linked(In)g what is taught in the classroom with what the sport industry demands.

Background: Clinical judgment skills development of nursing professional is essential and vital during clinical education. This quasi experimental study hasevaluated the impact of standardizedIn-patient’s exposure on clinical judgment among under graduate nursing students using observational measures. Method: A single group of undergraduate students was recruited with purposive sampling at College of Nursing, Shalamar Hospital Lahore, Pakistan and Tanner’s clinical rubric model was used. A total 78 under graduate nursing students accomplished in five In-patients exposure within 45 clinical hours. Two Clinical Nursing Instructors were hired to evaluate the outcome of nursing students; clinical judgment at the end of each standardized in-patient exposure session. The inter-rater reliability ranged 0.830 to 0.90 for the session. Results: Clinical judgment outcome were improved from first in-patient exposure to last patient exposure compared with pre and post data of clinical judgement of patient second, third, fourth and fifth. The debriefing method was helpful for the undergraduate nursing students to improve their critical thinking. The undergraduate nursing students confessed that in-patient exposure has not only uplifted their clinical experience but also strengthened the critical thinking in emergency situation and improve the ability to notice, interpret, and respond suitably. The clinical nursing faculty also highlighted and valued the newly learned knowledge and commented that exposure of In-patients to under graduate nursing students is essential for clinical skills preparation. Conclusion: Standardized In-patient exposure has potential to support the undergraduate nursing student for the development of clinical judgement. No doubt, the clinical instructor has enhanced nursing professional’s intrinsic motivation but standardized in-patient presented a true picture, while learning to complete assessment skills.A difference may exist between high fidelity simulator and standardized in-patient exposure among undergraduate nursing students, so further research can explore this phenomenology. Background: Nurses are expected to play an important role in smoking reduction education. Although the smoking ban was enacted in Taiwan in 1997, which included the introduction of smoking-free areas around the entrances of hospitals, many smokers are still found near hospitals. Few smoking reduction programs have been initiated around hospital entrances. The aim of this study was to examine the impacts of an innovative smoking reduction education program, which was conducted by nursing students around the entrances of a teaching hospital. Methods: A prospective pre- and post-test study design was used. The smoking reduction education program consisted of posters, audio broadcasts, and dramatic performances that provided information and resources related to smoking reduction. Outcome variables included the number of smokers, number of cigarette butts on the ground, and the experiences from nursing students after conducting the program. Results: After adjusting for weather and temperature, the number of smokers decreased significantly in the afternoon and during the whole day after the implementation of the program. The number of cigarette butts significantly decreased during the implementation of the program. Conclusion: The findings reveal that alternative smoking reduction programs initiated around hospital entrances significantly reduced both the number of smokers and cigarette butts on the ground. Nursing students shared their positive experiences in conducting this study.

Background and objective: Lead poisoning is a major public health crisis in Michigan. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of an education intervention on knowledge and confidence levels among nursing students enrolled in the pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN2BSN) program.Methods: The study used a quantitative pre- and post-test design to assess the impact of lead health learning activities on knowledge and confidence among undergraduate nursing students in the Midwestern United States. The final study sample included 115 nursing students from two student cohorts. The study instrument used 26-item Nursing Students Lead Knowledge and Confidence Scale; independent sample t-tests, paired sample t-test and Cohen’s d for the effect size were used in data analyses.Results: The education improved total knowledge and confidence on both groups whereas RN2BSN students had larger effect sizes on the differences of pre- to post-test scores than pre-licensure students in general lead knowledge, lead exposure knowledge, total lead knowledge, and confidence.Conclusions: The results contribute to limited literature examining a critical public health concern regarding lead health exposure and prevention education of nursing students. Incorporating such content area into nursing curriculums is essential in ensuring that such public health disparities are mitigated.

Nurse educators perform a critical role and function impacting thousands of nursing students each year in the delivery of safe, evidence-based, high quality care of patients. When evaluating the impact of the educational activities, it is also critical that nurse educators have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to identify and measure the outcomes of the instruction delivered. Nurse educators must also have in-depth knowledge of teaching and learning styles, technology such as simulation, and the diversity that is present in the nursing school classroom. All of these factors impact curriculum development and delivery. Obtaining certification as a nurse educator indicates that a standard of excellence as a nurse educator has been achieved that sends a positive message to the public about the quality of instruction nursing students receive in nursing education programs.

Abstract Objectives Examine the impact of TeamSTEPPS® training and simulation experiences on student knowledge and teamwork attitudes in a baccalaureate-nursing program. Methods This study used a quasi-experimental, pre-test, post-test design. The intervention included a workshop followed by 2 days of simulation experiences. Participants included a total of 46 nursing students. Instruments included the TeamSTEPPS learning benchmark and the Teamwork Attitudes Questionnaire (T-TAQ). Results Scores on the learning benchmark increased following the intervention. In addition, changes in subscores of teamwork strategies, leadership, situation monitoring, and mutual support on the T-TAQ indicate an improvement in student attitudes toward teamwork. Conclusions Incorporating TeamSTEPPS® strategies into undergraduate education can be effective in increasing student knowledge and improving attitudes toward interdisciplinary teamwork.

This article used a within-subjects pre- and post-test comparison design to verify the impact of metacognition on clinical judgment and clinical competence in simulations using blended learning for nursing students. The study participants were 56 nursing students in their 4th year of college. The metacognition score of the participants for this study was not statistically significant. The differences in clinical judgment score and clinical competence scores reached statistical significance (t=-13.76, p=&lt;0.001; t==-9.06, p=&lt;0.001). Post-learning, the difference in clinical judgment score among 3 metacognition groups was statistically significant (F=3.76, p=0.029). The differences in clinical competence score among 3 metacognition groups pre- and post-test were statistically significant (F=3.87, p=0.027; F=6.09, p=0.004).

Abstract Background Delirium is a common disorder affecting several people in primary, secondary, and tertiary settings. The condition is frequently under-diagnosed leading to long-lasting physical and cognitive impairment or premature death. Despite this, there has been limited research on the impact of innovative approaches to delirium education amongst undergraduate nursing students. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a delirium awareness podcast on undergraduate nursing student knowledge and confidence related to the condition in Northern Ireland. Methods The intervention was a 60-min delirium awareness podcast, available throughout May 2020, to a convenience sample of year one undergraduate nursing students (n = 320) completing a BSc Honours Nursing degree programme in a Northern Ireland University. The podcast focused on how nursing students could effectively recognise, manage, and prevent delirium. Participants had a period of 4 weeks to listen to the podcast and complete the pre and post questionnaires. The questionnaires were comprised of a 35-item true-false Delirium Knowledge Questionnaire (DKQ), a 3-item questionnaire about professional confidence and a 7-item questionnaire evaluating the use of podcasting as an approach to promote knowledge and confidence about delirium. Data were analysed using paired t-tests and descriptive statistics. Results Students improved across all three core areas in the post-test questionnaire, demonstrating improvements in knowledge about symptoms of delirium (7.78% increase), causes and risk factors of delirium (13.34% increase) and management of delirium (12.81% increase). In relation to perceived confidence, students reported a 46.50% increase in confidence related to recognition of delirium, a 48.32% increase in relation to delirium management and a 50.71% increase their ability to communicate about delirium. Both questionnaires were statistically significant (P < 0.001). The final questionnaire illustrated that nursing students positively evaluated the use of podcast for promoting their knowledge and confidence about delirium and 96.32% of nursing students believed that the podcast met their learning needs about delirium. Conclusions A 60-min podcast on delirium improved first year student nurse knowledge about delirium. Nursing students also expressed that this approach to delirium education was effective in their learning about the condition.

Objective: to evaluate the impact of the “Strengthening Self-Esteem” intervention proposed by the Nursing Interventions Classification, conducted through the use of Facebook, on the self-esteem and self-efficacy levels of nursing undergraduates. Method: quasi-experimental study carried out in two Higher Education Institutions. The sample consisted of 74 students. Two data collection tools were applied before and after the intervention: Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and General and Perceived Self-Efficacy Scale. The students were submitted to the intervention for ten sessions. Posts were made in private profile created on Facebook and consisted of positive messages, reflective texts and pictures, all supported by the persuasive resources of Bandura’s theoretical framework. Results: of the 264 students who answered the pretest, 74 (28.03%) participated in the interventions and the post-test. Rosenberg self-esteem (p=0.026) and self-efficacy (p=0.001) scores after the intervention were significantly higher than those obtained before, confirming the effectiveness of the intervention. Conclusion: the “Strengthening Self-Esteem” intervention was effective for improving students’ self-esteem and self-efficacy levels. Such interventions help spread knowledge and build mentally healthier individuals.

AbstractObjectivesThis study examines the impact of accreditation on the quality of public healthcare delivery in primary and secondary healthcare facilities in Kerala, India.Study DesignA cross-sectional study.SettingKerala State, IndiaParticipantsParticipants are the in-patients (621) who are admitted in medical wards at accredited (312) and non-accredited (309) public healthcare facilities.Main Outcome MeasuresTen constructs used in the study, overarching the quality healthcare delivery, adapting previous studies, SERVQUAL, and Donabedian’s SPO models, are Physical Facility, Admission Services, Patient centeredness, Accessibility of Medical Care, Financial Factors, Professionalism, Staff Services, Medical Quality, Diagnostic Services, and Patient Satisfaction.MethodsThe study employed a positivist approach using a survey questionnaire. The study was conducted from July 2017 to July 2018, using stratified random sampling consists of the four strata; GHs, W&C hospitals, THQHs/THs and CHCs.ResultsAccreditation has a positive impact on patient satisfaction and other quality dimensions, overarching structural and procedural quality in primary healthcare facilities under the public sector in Kerala. Conversely, accreditation has not improved the quality dimensions in secondary healthcare facilities and thereby, the satisfaction of patients.ConclusionsIt cannot be assumed that accreditation is always associated with quality care in primary healthcare facilities. The implementation process must be systematic and must be regularly monitored to make it useful. Mere structural transformation through accreditation alone cannot guarantee patient satisfaction. Secondary healthcare facilities must be transformed into quality care centres through rhetoric action of the authorities concerned through organized efforts.
