Technological Structure for Technology Integration in the Classroom, Inspired by the Maker Culture

Aim/Purpose: This paper presented the framework for the integration of digital technologies in education, implemented in InTecEdu Program, developed by Remote Experimentation Laboratory (RExLab), Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Brazil. Background: The main objective of the model presented is to arouse interest in science and technology among adolescents. Therefore, it sought to develop STEM competencies (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in children and adolescents. Understanding learning in STAM areas can favor the development of professionals who can supply the demand in related sectors, especially in the scientific-technological scope. To fulfill the main objective, strategies related to students and teachers were developed. With activities aimed at students, it was hoped to promote vocations to scientific-technological careers and encourage entrepreneurship. On the other hand, the activities related to teachers aimed at training them to integrate technology into their lesson plans. Inspired by the Maker Culture, the model sought to make it possible for teachers to become the main agents in the process of integrating technology in their lesson plans, since they were in charge of building and producing their digital content and other resources to support their didactic activities. The maker movement is a technological extension of the “Do It Yourself!” culture, which encourages ordinary people to build, modify, repair, and manufacture their objects, with their own hands. The training actions were preceded by a diagnosis, inspired by the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) model, as well as the lesson plans prepared and made available by the teachers. Methodology: Methodologically, the framework’s work plan was composed of five Work Packages (WP), which include management, resource mapping, strategies related to teachers, strategies related to students, and the dissemination and exploitation of results. In the 2014-2018 period, 367 teachers participated in training activities, intending to integrate technologies into lesson plans. At the end of 2018, 27 Basic Education schools, including an indigenous and a rural school, from the public-school system, in the states of Santa Catarina, Minas Gerais, and the Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil, using the project’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). In these 70 teachers, 230 classes, and 6,766 students accessed didactic content, produced by teachers, at VLE. Also, 20 laboratories were available in 26 instances, for use in practical activities in disciplines in the STEM areas. Specifically, in the STEM areas, 3,360 students from 98 classes from 9 schools had integrated the Remote Laboratories, in lesson plans in the subjects of Physics and Biology (High School), Science (Elementary School). Contribution: The main results of the application of the framework are related to the training of human resources, knowledge production, and educational innovation. About the training of human resources, we sought to contribute to the training of teachers concerning technology in education and, with that, arouse greater interest on the part of students, as well as obtain improvements in their learning from teaching methodologies supported on the use of digital technologies. On the other hand, the production of knowledge, in the program and the socialization of research, is favored by the model based on open-source resources, both in terms of software and hardware and with open educational resources. This characteristic favor and expands the potential for reapplying research and, consequently, its contribution to educational innovation. Findings: The results, about students, indicated an increase in motivation due to the creation of new teaching and learning opportunities. The fact of extending the classroom and school, through remote laboratories, to support practical activities and the use of VLE, was also pointed out as a very positive factor. On the other hand, the realization of the workshops, inspired by practices of the Maker Culture, provided an approximation of these to the skills of the real world, which will certainly favor their employability. Regarding the teachers, it is noticed the continuity and expansion in the use of technological resources in the classroom; many sought and have participated in new training actions. Recommendations for Practitioners: Provision of a repository of practices for sharing and reuse of lesson plans developed by teachers participating in the research. Technical documents, manuals, and guides for robotics, computer programming, electronics and new technology workshops for students. Impact on Society: The main results of the framework application are related to human resources formation, knowledge production, and educational innovation. Regarding the formation of human resources, we sought to contribute to the formation of teachers concerning technology in education and, about the students the creation of teaching and learning opportunities, to extend the classroom and also the school, through the remote laboratories, to support the practical activities and the use of the VLE. Future Research: The socialization and reapplication of the framework since it is based on open-source resources, both software and hardware, and with open educational resources.

Character education is a vital instrument in determining the progress of a nation. Therefore the government needs to build educational institutions in order to produce good human resources that are ready to oversee and deliver the nation at a progressive level. It’s just that in reality, national education is not in line with the ideals of national education because the output is not in tune with moral values on the one hand and the potential for individuals to compete in world intellectual order on the other hand. Therefore, as a solution to these problems is the need for the applicationof character education from an early age.

The significant number of publications describing unsuccessful cases in the introduction of health information systems makes it advisable to analyze the factors that may be contributing to such failures. However, the very notion of success is not equally assumed in all publications. Based in a literature review, the authors argue that the introduction of systems must be based in an eclectic combination of knowledge fields, adopting methodologies that strengthen the role of organizational culture and human resources in this project, as a whole. On the other hand, the authors argue that the introduction of systems should be oriented by a previously defined matrix of factors, against which the success can be measured.

According to Mead’s concept, the vision of the world based on the authority of the older generation and patterns provided by grandparents is not valid any longer. At the same time, the elements of post-figurativeness and pre-figurativeness co-occur in the cross-generation cultural transmission. By being born and educated in the environment of older family members, a child acquires knowledge and gets acquainted with the values considered as traditional in the community. On the other hand, seniors’ learning new technology from the young enables being together of grandparents and grandchildren. This enhances talk, transmission of values and experiences as well as getting both generations emotionally and mentally closer. The article deals with the study the findings of which show that the old bring religious, historical and moral values for family life. In this respect, seniority is an important human potential, indispensable in the upbringing of the younger generation. A large part of grandparents' behavior patterns is a reference to the behavior of grandchildren, determining their belonging to a particular group or community. On the other hand, the emergence of new realities of life, the development of new models of lifestyle does not clearly indicate the devaluation of the authority of grandparents.In the research group, grandchildren use the experience, skills and knowledge of the older generation. Moreover, the phenomenon of post-visualization can be found when grandchildren become parents. In turn, training older people by the younger ones mainly occurs regarding practical skills related to using computers, tablets, cameras, smartphones etc. The phenomenon possesses an indispensable educational sense. It enables grandchildren to have time with her grandparents - communicating, transferring values and experience.

Three factors determining the success of nonformal education are organization, human resources, and relevancy of programs to the needs of society. The programs has its own target, that is human resources of nonformal education personnel. Among them are supervisors, facilitator, and other personnel served by the Directorate. On the other hand, their roles balance the needs of the General Directorate and Quality Improvement Eduational Teachers as well as the society. Therefore, it’s necesary for them to improve their knowledge and skills continously. In return, the productivity ot the organization of nonformal education is to be improved simultanneosly. There should be trainings for them to improve their knowledge and skills as well as to be professional. The success of trainigs is proven through their skill knowledge improvement in the work place.

Indonesia gets demographic bonus in 2015-2035. Demographic bonus is when the number of productive population of the age of 15-64 years reaches about 70% or about 180 million people and the rest is about 30% or about 60 million people of unproductive age. The demographic bonus is like a double-edged sword. This demographic bonus becomes a profitable phenomenon on the one hand and on the other hand can be disastrous for a country. Beneficial and potential if a country is able to prepare its young generation with a quality generation and vice versa would be disastrous if the state is unable to prepare its human resources. High quality human resources both in terms of education, health, skills so as to compete in the world of work. This phenomenon is of course interesting to be studied further, especially how the opportunities and challenges for diversity in Indonesia.

With the introduction of the Web 2.0 philosophy in the learning arena, the way learning actors interact has changed substantially. From a collaborative perspective, all the actors in the learning landscape could make use of a variety of tools for collaboration, making up what it is called: “collaborative learning 2.0.” In this chapter, the discussion is focused on the open educational resources (OER), concretely open assessment resources, i.e., open resources used in the assessment process (formative and/or summative). The authors explore the way to create, share, search, manage, and access to these resources; all these actions are described from the context of collaboration inherited from the Web 2.0 paradigms: collaboration among teachers and course designers, teachers and learners, and any other factors that could arise in the assessment process. On the other hand, the approach to managing the open assessment resources is based on an outcome-based assessment process because of the great importance of the outcome-based learning.

People's understanding of fiqh of worship is only a matter for the happiness of the hereafter while understanding muamalah fiqh / Economy is for world happiness only. Understanding like this will have an impact on the radical behavior of Muslims, which is hard behavior and considers the separation absolutely necessary. Whereas in other propositions there are still many criteria for the process of worship to find happiness in the hereafter such as intention. Intention will determine whether an action is good or not good, right or wrong and there are many more propositions that make someone happy in the world and the hereafter. The muamalah fiqh in this paper is limited to economic studies, in order to focus more closely on the extent of muamalah studies. This limitation is only an example, because the essence of muamalah is not an example, but rather the construction of the proposition. Separation of world affairs and the hereafter on the other hand also has an impact on lagging in world civilization. Technology that is always changing and developing all the time cannot be balanced by some Muslims except as connoisseurs of technology. The emergence of new technology actually triggers inequality in society, and its inability to conclude that it is not important because of world affairs, unfortunately our helplessness when Muslims feel very left behind in technology actually triggers the separation of world science and the hereafter, and the choice is to build hatred that triggers the emergence of the movement radical behavior. No longer heard the movement of a creative generation of young Muslims, gradually vanished eroded by the logic of looking for happiness in the hereafter by leaving world activities. The reality that occurs is precisely concerning the younger generation of Islam, even they are sometimes willing to sacrifice themselves to find happiness in the hereafter with suicide bombings using the logic of jihad. Data from the Wahid Institute in 2016 showed that 7.7% of Indonesians claimed to be willing to participate, and 0.4% had participated in activities that could potentially cause violence in the name of religion, while 72% disagreed with radicals.

Learners in the 21st century face a new kind of challenge considering the presence of the new technology. Nowadays, they have more option to learn by using the new technology. Teachers, on the other hand, have to be aware of these instruments. Instead of looking at technology as a threat, teacher should understand their position as teacher while at the same time, coping and embracing the new technology. Character education and development of Pancasila values need to be implemented ??in schools to face globalization era that will bring many changes along with acceleration of new cultures and civilizations from various nations in the world. It means the world of education in generating quality of human resources and professionals must prepare a competitive generation of characters. A concrete steps to realize together is character education from an early age. On the other hand, the teacher as the spearhead in education world can insert character implementation in every learning process. One effective step that can be done is to implement cooperative script strategy in learning process and character implementation.
