Aim/Purpose: The purpose of this study is to shed light on how students learn within an environment tailored to knowledge creation. Background: We build on Nonaka, Toyama, and Konno’s three key elements: SECI model, Ba, Leadership as well as current knowledge management researchers critiques and improvements. Methodology: Based on an introductory marketing course, we used an in-house web based learning tool (peer-to peer) to capture score performances and perception surveys. The analysis was conducted through an exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Contribution: This study shed light on current knowledge management critiques by providing measures at the micro-level and community level. Findings: Perceptions of adaptability and usefulness change positively over time, while students’ repeated practice prepares them for different styles of questions as their performances increases over time. Recommendations for Practitioners: Organizations can understand how employees create knowledge through exchange of ideas, feedback, and common goals. Supervisor can understand their employees better and employees can gain a sense of control on their work. Recommendation for Researchers: The ability to capture information over time on the human and community level within a system allows further research to shed light on different variables of knowledge creation in the field. Impact on Society : An appreciation of the mechanism of knowledge creation can encourage organization to become more innovative and focus on people rather than material. Future Research: Measures such as the engagement level, the personality level, and compatibility level within a community to create knowledge are to be explored.

Abstract Experimental streams are bounded and partly enclosed lotic units that facilitate the simulation of certain aspects of natural stream ecosystems under controlled conditions. We summarized the current knowledge regarding experimental streams in order to support researchers in designing and undertaking future studies using experimental streams. We observed an increase in the number of such studies since 1975. The geographically uneven distribution of studies suggests that the generalization of findings to global scale may not be straightforward. Our results indicate that macroinvertebrates, fish, and algae are the most frequently studied organisms and that the size of the experimental streams was related to the focal organism group(s) studied. The size of the units decreased over time, while the number of treatments, interpreted as the combination of the levels of factors, increased. These results suggest that biologically complex studies have gradually been replaced by biologically less complex ones. In contrast, the experimental complexity (the number of treatments) and the statistical power (number of replication) increased. Finally, we identified a number of important, but poorly documented pieces of information regarding experimental stream systems and experimental protocols and made recommendations for future research.

Polysaccharides are major components of macroalgal and phytoplankton biomass and constitute a large fraction of the organic matter produced and degraded in the ocean. Until recently, however, our knowledge of marine polysaccharides was limited due to their great structural complexity, the correspondingly complicated enzymatic machinery used by microbial communities to degrade them, and a lack of readily applied means to isolate andcharacterize polysaccharides in detail. Advances in carbohydrate chemistry, bioinformatics, molecular ecology, and microbiology have led to new insights into the structures of polysaccharides, the means by which they are degraded by bacteria, and the ecology of polysaccharide production and decomposition. Here, we survey current knowledge, discuss recent advances, and present a new conceptual model linking polysaccharide structural complexity and abundance to microbially driven mechanisms of polysaccharide processing. We conclude by highlighting specific future research foci that will shed light on this central but poorly characterized component of the marine carbon cycle.

The chapter aims to provide an overview of the role of social media for knowledge management in tourism industry. Respect than traditional tools, the social media penetration within such industry is growing thanks to opportunity for travelers and travel professionals to access critical tourism knowledge everywhere and every time. Prior research has mainly focused on how social media are changing the tourism industry, while it is lacking enough the contribution of these technologies to managing touristic knowledge. This chapter seeks to shed light on how social media support knowledge management, with particular attention to knowledge creation, sharing, and preservation processes, in tourism industry. In particular, while knowledge creation and sharing process have attracted the attention of scholars, knowledge preservation via social media seems be still in its infancy stage.

The reliance on the knowledge garnered from past experience can be crucial for solving problems that occur in any development (Pólya, 1945). A pattern (Buschmann, Henney, & Schmidt, 2007) is a type of conceptually reusable knowledge that has been found useful in various domains of interest (Rising, 2000). For novices, patterns have served as means of guidance; for experts, they have served as means of reference. There are a number of viewpoints of a pattern, and views emanating from these viewpoints (Kamthan, 2010). The interest in this article is to formulate an understanding of a pattern from the perspective of knowledge management. This understanding can, in turn, be useful for communicating a pattern to both humans and machines in a number of ways including publishing a pattern, disseminating a pattern, and using a pattern. The rest of the article is organized as follows. First, the background and related work necessary for subsequent discussion is outlined. Then, relevant stakeholders of a pattern are identified and, based on a process for knowledge creation and transfer that originated in industrial engineering, a knowledge management model for a pattern is proposed. Next, challenges and directions for future research are outlined. Finally, concluding remarks are given.

This article explores and shows how a Project Manager interacts with the project team to facilitate the creation and sharing of new knowledge within project environment. Three types of data were collected from one pharmaceutical company. This article contributes to the current Knowledge Management literature by proposing a new structure for the knowledge creation process, an infinite loop enabling multiple paths rather than a single linear path process. The authors discuss practical implications as well as avenues for the future research.

Throughout this book a number of practical implications and recommendations for event organisers have been mentioned and outlined. This chapter aims to bring them all together in relation to some of the challenges faced by event organisations specifically, as covered in Chapter 2. It is worth remembering though, that any knowledge management initiative in any kind of organisation is not just down to top management and their aims and objectives. Debowski (2006: 337) nicely summarised the four key knowledge management principles as follows: - Knowledge management is everyone’s business; - Knowledge practices are legitimate core business; - Communication is essential; and - High performance should be encouraged. While the recommendations presented throughout this chapter are largely aimed at event managers, they need to be incorporated with all employees in mind; permanent and seasonal staff members, volunteers, as well as contractors, suppliers, local businesses and other stakeholders. An event organisation can only learn as a whole over time by effectively bringing together knowledge and expertise from as many different sources as possible. Furthermore, effective knowledge management, and a more explicit understanding of it, will enhance professionalisation across the events industry and will make event professionals more employable in the future (Stadler et al., 2014). The book has also highlighted that there is still a need for further research into knowledge management in event organisations. In the final section of this chapter, suggestions for future research will hence be presented. This could be in the form of student research projects, dissertations (undergraduate or postgraduate), as well as consultancy work or other types of applied research.

Discovering the ways through which firms develop and maintain competitive advantage is a central research stream in management theory. The objective of this paper is to present a contribution to the discussion of the knowledge of the firm as a source of competitive advantage. The paper states that a firm's success is a consequence of its ability in the continuous development of core competencies that will sustain its competitiveness over time. Core competencies are understood as the sets of knowledge that differentiate a company strategically. The firm must discover, develop, share and update the knowledge that sustains the present and future core competencies. Knowledge management, through processes of knowledge creation and integration, is one way of doing this.

Purpose Based on the growing interest devoted to knowledge management (KM) in inter-organizational contexts, the purpose of this paper is to systematize existing literature and understand how it developed over time, thus tracing its roots and evolution to unveil gaps and suggest new promising areas for future research. Design/methodology/approach This study used bibliographic techniques to analyze a sample of 85 studies along three main periods (1998-2010, 2011-2014 and 2015-2019). In particular, this study focused on co-occurrences of keywords to identify the most dominant themes, as well as connections among these themes. Findings Overall, the review shows the main outlets that have published papers on the topic of KM in inter-organizational contexts, as well as the theoretical background this research builds on. The temporal analysis exhibits the core topics that have persisted and grown consistently over time as the links between KM, innovation and networks. In addition, the review highlights new emerging themes, such as the human and social side of KM, and new interesting contexts of study (e.g. coopetition and open/user innovation), which opens exciting avenues for new research opportunities. Originality/value This study illustrates the conceptual structure of the field in three distinct periods and contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the key topics and their interrelatedness within the area of KM in inter-organizational contexts. Both researchers and practitioners can profit from the study because it reveals consolidated topics while identifying areas that still need to be investigated to foster KM in inter-organizational settings.

Knowledge and the capability to create and utilize knowledge today are consid- ered to be the most important sources of a firm’s sustainable competitive advantage. This paper aims to advance understanding of the knowledge creation of firm in Vietnam by studying Alphanam Company. The case illustrates how knowledge- based management pursues a vision for the future based on ideals that consider the relationships of people in society. The finding shows that the case succeeded because of their flexibility and mobility to keep meeting to the changing needs of the customers or stakeholders. The paper also provided some suggestions for future research to examine knowledge-based management of the companies in a different industry segments and companies originating in other countries
