This study is aimed at determining the impact that web-based middleware systems can imprint in enhancing learning and assessment. Representative samples of students attending introductory computer classes at the Technikon, were assessed to determine the level of their knowledge and use of the Internet. Very few of them demonstrate high Internet knowledge and awareness. Over 80% indicate willingness to surf the web more, if there is a compelling situation that forces or encourages them. One group of students, were given assignments and tests throughout the semester via the on-line system developed, and were subsequently reassessed at the end of the semester. The result showed dramatic improvement in the level of their knowledge and use of the Internet as well as increased speed of carrying out assigned tasks on the Internet. The study concludes there is a huge impact that web-based middleware can imprint in enhancing learning even in contact institutions.

Businesses and governments continue to expand the use of the internet to access and provide a wide range services to consumers. This change in service delivery presents a potential access barrier for people who do not have access to the internet available in their homes. Publicly available computers attempt to bridge this gap; however, it is not clear if people are willing to use computers in these environments to engage in the full range of web-based activities, particularly online transactions. We expand Triandis’ modified TRA model to consider user characteristics and the impact of the physical and virtual environment on public transactional use of websites. Results indicate that people are sensitive to the physical environment surrounding the computer and that Internet self-efficacy supports public transactional use while individual need for privacy deters transactional use in a public environment. In addition, people without personal internet access do complete transactions at other non-public locations and that completing transactions from non-public locations is a strong determinant of public transactional use.

BACKGROUND Research on the use of the Internet in the medical field is experiencing many advances, including mobile applications, social networks, telemedicine. Its implementation in medical care and comprehensive patient management is a much discussed topic at present. OBJECTIVE This narrative review aims to understand the impact of the internet and social networks on the management of diabetes, both for patients and medical staff. METHODS The bibliographic search was carried out in the databases Pubmed, Virtual Health Library (VHL) and Lilacs between 2018 to 2020. RESULTS Multiple mobile applications have been created for the help and control of diabetic patients, as well as the implementation of online courses, improving the knowledge of health personnel applying them in the field of telemedicine. CONCLUSIONS The use of the Internet and social networks brings many benefits for both the diabetic patient and the health personnel, offering advantages for both.

The authors examine the impact of the remote delivery of financial services on the branch network of British building societies. The current phase of branch-network rationalisation in the financial sector in Europe and North America is argued in the academic literature to be the inevitable consequence of the growth of electronic and telemediated forms of delivery of financial services. In the British building society sector, despite some evidence of branch closure as the use of the Internet and telephone call centres in the delivery of financial services has grown, the picture that emerges is of a dynamic branch network that is responding to changing customer demands and new technological possibilities. Face-to-face advice and discussions between customers and trained ‘experts’ remain an important part of the mortgage transaction. In the savings market, where products have become more commodified, telephone call centres and, more recently, the Internet have become more prominent, but institutions still rely heavily on the branch network to deliver services. The authors suggest that, although there have been changes in the relative importance of different distribution channels as sources of business in the financial sector, it is wrong to view these changes in terms of a simple branch-versus-direct dichotomy. A more complex picture is presented, with most institutions adopting a multichannel approach to the delivery of financial services, and electronic forms of delivery of financial services being developed as an additional delivery channel alongside the branch.

Introduction: Pregnancy is a period of doubts and anxiety for most pregnant women. Objective: To evaluate the use of the Internet as a support tool to clarify doubts raised by women during pregnancy. Methods: An exploratory and descriptive study. Sample based on accidentalness, for 241 users who responded to the on-line form, built with Google Docs and made available in  one Blog. Results: 98% of pregnant women were between 19 and 39 years, 97% with schooling above 9 years, 99% had follow up with healthcare providers. Regarding the use of the Internet, 99% said they usually search for the pregnancy questions. The doubts consisted mostly in the search for information about the development of the baby, then how to deal with the discomforts of pregnancy, the changes in the woman’s body and feeding care. The choice of the sites, according to the interviewees, occurred mainly through the indication of social networks, friends and acquaintances. Regarding to the resolution of doubts, 97% reported that after the Internet search doubts were resolved. Conclusion: The Internet has been a tool of support for pregnant women who seek effective support on the World Wide Web to clarify their doubts. The significant standard for clarification and education reflected a customer that will search and possibly question the procedures and practices that are performed during prenatal care. However, the search for sites has been based on independent research guidance by health professionals, something which does not ensure the credibility of the sites surveyed by users.

The emergence and spread of Internet communication has led to changes in social relationships, abuse of the Internet and maladaptive behavior. Among the authors who have studied the impact of these changes there is no consensus, and the results of their research are often contradictory. Some authors conclude that Internet communication strengthens networks of its users, while others believe that such communication leads to reduced participation in real social life. In a number of people, excessive use of the Internet adversely affects the mental health and social life and can lead to obsession at the expense of other aspects of life and creating addiction. The greatest risk of negative impacts of online communication is among children and young people. The study aims to explore the current reality of internet service in school libraries affiliated with the education of Karak by identifying the advantages and disadvantages of the service and identifying the most important problems facing the use of the Internet in school libraries. The study also aimed to knew the views and perspectives of each of the managers, secretaries and employees of school libraries on the impact of the Internet service in their libraries. The study gains its importance by addressing the issue of the Internet and its basic services in school libraries and its importance and benefits in the scientific research process. The study population consists of students of the education schools in Karak Governorate from the preparatory and secondary school levels. The study sample is represented in the Kasbah of Karak schools for males and females for the preparatory and secondary stages. The researcher used the descriptive, analytical approach and the case study approach. The researcher collected data through books and periodicals that dealt with the Internet topic and the interview with the librarian and the questionnaire. The study came out with a set of findings and recommendations for students and librarians, which will help develop the use of the Internet in school libraries.

The Impact

The study of networks has been propelled by improvements in computing power, enabling our ability to mine and store large amounts of network data. Moreover, the ubiquity of the internet has afforded us access to records of interactions that have previously been invisible. We are now able to study complex networks with anywhere from hundreds to billions of nodes; however, it is difficult to visualize large networks in a meaningful way. We explore the process of visualizing real-world networks. We first discuss the properties of complex networks and the mechanisms used in the network visualizing software Gephi. Then we provide examples of voting, trade, and linguistic networks using data extracted from on-line sources. We investigate the impact of hidden community structures on the analysis of these real-world networks.

The Internet is a tool that enables knowledge and information to spread rapidly, which has a huge impact on the development of person and society. It has a particularly significant impact on the young generation that eagerly use its benefits for the entertainment, communication and information purposes. A mobile phone plays an increasing role here, as it enables continuous, mobile access to the network. However, the effects of using the Internet in everyday life can be positive (e.g. learning) but also negative (e.g. addictions). Research shows that the time spent by young people online is constantly increasing. This causes concern among parents and carers. The use of the Internet by children and adolescents is a current and important topic, that requires constant attention and continuation of research, as well as education of users, parents and teachers on the proper use of the Internet.
