Dockrillia striolata (Rchb.f.) Rauschert, known as the yellow rock-orchid, occurs in New South Wales, Victoria and along the east coast of Tasmania. Within Tasmania, populations occur on the islands of the Furneaux Group and on mainland Tasmania (Kelvedon Hills south of Swansea through to wukalina/Mount William in the northeast). The taxonomy of the species is revised, with subsp. chrysantha no longer recognised as distinct based on a morphological examination of flower size and other characters. The species is restricted to Devonian granite-type rocks and Jurassic dolerite, usually in near-coastal areas and in various vegetation types. A review of the conservation status indicates that the species does not qualify as threatened under the Tasmanian Threatened Species Protection Act 1995, with it being well reserved throughout its range, an extent of occurrence of ca. 7500 km2, represented by at least 30 well-defined subpopulations, no apparent historical or contemporary declines in any population parameters, nor any identifiable risks.

The aims of this study were to identify common ecological patterns among threatened fauna in New South Wales, and to identify priority areas for research and management by determining which regions and habitats contain high numbers of threatened fauna. Threatened and non-threatened fauna were taken from the listings of Lunney et al. (1996, 1997). Species were categorized into weight classes, diet groups, habitats and regions and by level of knowledge available about them. All regions and habitats of the State contain threatened species. The northeastern region of New South Wales contains the greatest number of threatened species but the western region has suffered the most extinctions, especially of mammals. Species that historically inhabited a greater number of regions are less likely to be currently threatened or to be extinct than those with restricted distributions, and large species are more likely to be threatened than smaller species. The best predictors of a threatened mammals species were seeds and vegetation in the diet, heavier body weight, and ground-dwelling, burrowing, and rock pile/cave-dwelling habits. The Critical Weight Range (35?5 500g), although strongly associated with extinction of non-volant mammals, was not the most important predictor. Lord Howe Island held the highest proportion of threatened and extinct birds. Factors showing the strongest associations for threatened birds were carnivory, large size, and distribution in the southeastern region. The most poorly-known region for birds was the north-east, and the least known habitat was shrubland (including mallee, heath and chenopod shrubland). The status of reptiles was poorly known in all regions, especially the western region. Frogs were also poorly known in all regions. Frogs were most at risk if they were large, inhabited closed forest or occurred in the central or northeastern region. The study further revealed little association between particular ecological attributes and conservation status. This indicates that there are complex and pervasive threats affecting the status of New South Wales fauna. Research and management priority status could be argued for all regions and most habitats in the State, but the western or northeastern regions may face the most problems depending on the criteria used (e.g., past extinctions, number vs proportion of threatened species). Further, the conservation status of birds, reptiles and frogs is in particular need of attention from researchers.

In the State of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, the prosecution in criminal proceedings is seeking deterrence punishment for offenders manufacturing 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) from the precursor helional via the ‘Two Dogs’ method (TDM). The reason given by the prosecution is a presumption that the TDM does not use any unrestricted chemicals in the synthesis of MDA. A comprehensive literature search was conducted. The relevant law was searched to fact-check the assertion of the prosecution. It was found that the prosecution was incorrect. Intermediate precursors of the TDM are restricted in NSW. However, the starting precursor helional remains unscheduled in NSW, yet helional is scheduled in some other Australian States. The prosecution’s position may play a significant factor in the sentencing proceedings of offenders. Therefore, as a matter of urgency, the prosecution must review and update its position and its submissions, keeping with the factual position in relation to the legal provisions of precursors used in the TDM.

The Rhytidoponera impressa group is revised on the basis of worker ant morphology, supplemented by information from ecological and genetic studies. Five species are recognized, all of which occur in mesic habitats along the east coast of Australia: chalybaea Emery (New South Wales, southern Queensland), confusa, sp. nov. (Victoria, New South Wales, southern Queensland) enigmatica sp. nov. (Sydney region, N.S.W.),impressa Mayr (Queensland) and purpurea Emery (north Queensland, New Guinea). R. purpurea is the most distinct morphologically. Of the remaining species, chalybaea and confusa are exceedingly similar and in some localities can be unequivocably distinguished only on the basis of electrophoretic (allozyme) differences. Biogeographical relationships of the impressa group are discussed in relation to past climatic and vegetational changes.

The criminal mobility of outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG) members presents a significant challenge to Australian governments and police. Examining patterns of mobility can help to better understand the opportunity structures that underpin offending by OMCGs and to drive national collaborative responses to these gangs. This study examines the prevalence and patterns of criminal mobility in a sample of almost 4,000 OMCG members in more than 400 chapters. Around one in 10 members showed evidence of criminal mobility over the long term, while more than one-third of chapters comprised criminally mobile members. Criminally mobile gang members were heavily concentrated in a small number of chapters. Patterns of criminal mobility primarily involve movements into east coast jurisdictions. New South Wales and Queensland emerged as the most common destinations for criminally mobile OMCG members.
