The present article focuses on teacher competencies as a major factor that impacts student learning. Ultimately, all attempts to improve education converge in the teacher and the quality of his/her work with students. With their teaching methods, their communication and their classroom management, teachers can structure the kind of learning environment that will either promote or hinder learning. The purpose of the article is to analyse research on educational productivity in order to select the most important teacher competencies that are related to student achievement. A model of teacher competencies is developed that serves as a framework for understanding the synergetic effects of teacher competencies on achievement thorough promoting students’ cognitive, affective and social processes. The teacher competencies that impact each of the processes are described and their impact on student achievement is explained.

Studies on teacher preparation for managing bias has established and created a domain within the global educational research enterprise. What is implicit is how researches on managing bias may be used to improve teacher development. Research on managing bias in teacher preparation has recognized a place for itself within the international educational research initiative. What is not so clear is how studies of teacher thinking may be used in improving the quality of teacher development programmes. ‘The notion of managing bias implies employing strategies that foster inclusivity and multicultural education. This chapter focuses on five areas of the importance on managing bias in teacher preparation. I endeavour to explore the following: the concept bias, bias in teacher preparation, creating an anti-bias learning environment, preparing teachers for multicultural classes, and citizenship education and anti-bias in teacher preparation.

Objectives: Radiology education in the undergraduate level imparts in medical students the basic knowledge to interpret common pathological conditions, know the right imaging requests to make and the right order in which they should be made when they become physicians and the degree of this knowledge is influenced by several factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of radiology in exiting medical students and to identify the challenges of undergraduate radiology education. Material and Methods: This was a prospective cross-sectional observational study that was conducted in a 2-month period in the Radiology Department of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. The year 6 medical students of the University of Calabar, who were 79 in number, participated in the study. Relevant questions covering the major areas of radiology were presented to each participant by the use of a pre-test questionnaire. SPSS version 23.0., Pearson’s Chi-square test, and t-tests were used to analyze the data. Results: The medical students had a mean score of 66.5% in radiology knowledge. A significant relationship was observed between diagnostic radiology knowledge and the duration of radiology posting (P = 0.029), radiology teaching methods (P = 0.001), and the quality of learning environment (P = 0.002), respectively. Conclusion: The final year medical students in University of Calabar have an appreciable knowledge of radiology. This can be improved if the duration of radiology education increases by early introduction into the pre-clinical class or other clinical courses, if the radiology teaching methods are updated, and if the quality of the learning environment is improved.

The paper analyzes pedagogical implications of a psychometric and authentic approach in assessing the quality of student knowledge. Starting with the taxonomy of knowledge developed by Anderson and Krathwohl, epistemological assumptions and foundations of the theory of learning, the paper presents and analyzes the basic characteristics of both approaches, as well as their possibilities in assessing the quality of student knowledge. Given the fact that each approach in the assessment of student achievement is based on different epistemological assumptions, and is basically built on opposing theoretical foundations, it is clear that each of them provides a different picture of the quality of student knowledge, and helps improve the assessment of student achievement in its own, unique way. Based on the findings obtained using the two approaches to the assessment of student achievement, the following pedagogical implications have been derived: a) designing the theory and practice of teacher professional development in a way that supports new (and authentic) approaches in the assessment of student achievement; b) implementation of teaching methods should integrate the principles and characteristics of the authentic approach in the assessment of educational achievement; c) designing tests and authentic tasks is an integral part of the teaching process; d) principle of approximation is a feature of both theory and practice of educational assessment; and e) approaches considered here have different possibilities in assessing the quality of student knowledge. In addition to the previously mentioned, the paper also points out a number of important issues for further theoretical discussion, research and the application of different approaches in assessing the quality of student knowledge.
