Aedes aegypti, dengue fever mosquito, is primarily associated with the transmission of dengue in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The present investigations was carried out to assess the larvicidal efficacy of aqueous and ethanol leaf extract of Brassica oleracea var. botrytis L against 4th instar larvae of  Ae.aegypti. The concentration of extracts prepared from the leaf of plant Brassica oleracea var.botrytis L. were screened for their larvicidal activity against early fourth instars of dengue vector. The mortality rate of Ae.aegypti against aqueous and ethanol extracts of B.oleracea as follows 72% and 96%. Ethanol extract exposed to IVth larvae of Ae.aegypti is more efficiency than the aqueous extract. The present investigation suggest the possible use B. oleracea L. as an agent for the control of dengue vector, A. aegypti.

The control of Aedes aegypti has been considered one of the most important public health challenges worldwide. Chemical compounds have long been used for this purpose, but resistance to these molecules has also increased. Therefore, over the last few years several studies have focused on the development of alternative tools, particularly those based on plant metabolites. The purpose of this study was to assess the larvicidal activity of Caesalpinia ferrea and Lippia origanoides against Ae. aegypti. Larvae (L3) of Ae. aegypti Liverpool and Rockefeller strains, as well as of the Recife population were exposed to different concentrations  of C. ferrea (ranging from 13.1 to 105 mg/mL) and L. origanoides (ranging from 16.3 to 130 mg/mL), and the mortality rate was evaluated up to 48 hours after the beginning of the experiment. All tested groups and  ontrol group were quadruplicated. For C. ferrea, mortality ranged from 42.5% to 100% for Ae. aegypti Liverpool strain,from 67% to 100% for Ae. aegypti Rockfeller strain, and 57% to 100% for Ae. aegypti Recife population after 48 hours of larval exposure. For L. origanoides, the larvicidal activity ranged from 75% to 100% for Ae. aegypti Liverpool strain, from 61.5% to 100% for Ae. aegypti Rockfeller strain, and from 60.5% to 100% for Ae.aegypti Recife population. The hydro ethanol extract of C. ferrea and L. origanoides presented larvicidal activity against Ae. aegypti.KEY WORDS: Aedes aegypti; hydro ethanol extracts; Caesalpinia ferrea; Lippia sidoides; botanical insecticide; mosquitoes.

Aedes aegypti is the main vector of dengue fever that most commonly occurred in Indonesia. The application of botanical insecticides is being developed as an alternative vector control. Botanical components have been reported as the potential alternative to inhibit the process of oviposition and fecundity suppression. This study aims to determine the oviposition deterrent activity and ovicidal effects of ethanol extract of Pometia pinnata leaves against Aedes aegypti. Oviposition deterrent assay was conducted on twenty bloodfed females in a cage (40 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm). One treated oviposition trap and one control oviposition trap were placed in the opposite corner of the cage. Four replicates were performed for each concentration. The eggs were counted and analyzed after 72 hours of trial. Ethanol extract of Pometia pinnata leaves have antioviposition effect on female mosquitoes Aedes aegypti at 400 ppm (effective repellency / ER = 56.38%; oviposition active index/OAI = -0.39) and 500 ppm (ER = 66.4%; OAI = -0.49). In the ovicidal assay, twentyfive eggs are used for determination ovicidal effect and five replicates were performed for each concentration. The hatched larvae were collected and counted daily. The ethanolic extract of Pometia pinnata leaves at 0.05%, 0,1%, 0.15%, 0.2%, and 0.25% concentration have ovicidal activity of 11%, 28%, 87%, 94%, and 98% against Aedes aegypti eggs, respectively. This study revealed that the ethanol extract of Pometia pinnata leaves could be a potential alternative in controlling the dengue vector.

This work aimed to identify the bioactive compounds present in adult maqui (Aristotelia chilensis) leaves from different stages of development and seasons of the year and compare them with leaves obtained from maqui plants grown in vitro. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of maqui leaf extracts by HPLC-DAD-ESI-MSn showed the presence of different polyphenolic compounds classified into galloyl and caffeoyl quinic acids, ellagitannins and ellagic acid- and flavonoid-derivatives. In general, the total phenolic content of the in vitro samples was higher than that of ex vitro samples, whereas the total flavonoid content was higher in winter basal leaves. Additionally, the analysis by HPLC-MS showed that the extract from spring basal leaves was enriched in quercetin, catechin, kaempferol and 3-caffeoyl quinic acids, while in the in vitro leaves extract, quercetin was not present. As regards lipophilic compounds identified by GC/MS, the samples of in vitro leaves showed a high presence of α-tocopherol and β-sitosterol. In contrast, the samples of adult leaves presented a hight level of linolenic and linoleic acids. These results suggest that maqui leaves could be an excellent source of antioxidants and lipophilic compounds for many industries, such as the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract POTENSIAL DEVELOPMENT OF EXTRACT BELUNTAS (Plucea indica Less.) as BIOLARVACIDE TO MOSQUITO Aedes aegypti LARVAE. The eradication of Aedes aegyptY mosquito is difficult because they have the ability to adapt the environment which makes it very tough. Although, there are not disturbances due to natural phenomena or human intervention. Termination of the mosquito life cycle is an alternative to reduce the mosquito population. The antimicrobial of beluntas extract is expected to have the ability biolarvacide on mosquito larvae. The biolarvasicide of beluntas leaf extracts was determined LC50 values and strengthened by identification of the active compound. The biolarvacide tested was conducted on the larvae of Aedes aegypti with variations extract concentrations of 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1000 ppm for 24 hours observation. The experimental results found that yield of ethanol extract, extract n-hexane and ethyl acetate extract: 3.8742%, 1.2054% and 1.8627%. While the value of LC50 to extract n-hexane and ethyl acetate respectively amount to 46.09 ppm and 108.79 ppm. LC50 value obtained belong biolarvacide active and positive control using abate value LC100 Abate at a concentration of 100 ppm. The ability biolarvacide ethyl acetate fraction only make the mosquito larvae die, anwhile the fraction of n-hexane can degrade the cells larvae destroyed. The ability biolarvacide beluntas extract was corroborated by the results of GC-MS analysis which showed contains active compounds beluntas such as quinic acid, hydrazinecarboxamide, benzene acetic acid, and 1,2-benzendicarboxylic acid which is a compound of larvicides. Keywords: biolarvacide; beluntas; LC50, GC-MS  Abstrak Pemberantasan nyamuk Aedes aegypti sulit dilakukan karena mereka memiliki kemampuan adaptasi lingkungan yang membuat sangat tangguh, meski ada gangguan  akibat  fenomena  alam ataupun  intervensi manusia. Pemutusan siklus hidup nyamuk merupakan alternative dalam mengurangi populasi nyamuk. Sifat antimikroba ekstrak nyamuk diharapkan dapat memiliki kemampuan biolarvasida pada jentik nyamuk. Kemampuan biolarvasida ekstrak daun beluntas ditentukan melalui nilai LC50 dan diperkuat dengan identifikasi kandungan senyawa aktif. Uji biolarvasida ini dilakukan terhadap larva nyamuk Aedes aegypti dengan variasi konsentrasi ekstrak 50, 100, 250, 500 dan 1000 ppm selama 24 jam pengamatan. Hasil percobaan diketahui bahwa: rendemen untuk ekstrak etanol, ekstrak n-heksana dan ekstrak etil asetat masing-masing sebesar 3,8742 %, 1,2054 % dan 1,8627 % sementara nilai LC50 untuk ekstrak n-heksan dan etil asetat masing-masing sebesar 46,09 ppm dan 108,79 ppm. Nilai LC50 yang diperoleh termasuk golongan biolarvasida aktif dan kontrol positif menggunakan abate memiliki nilai LC100 Abate pada konsentrasi 100 ppm. Kemampuan biolarvasida fraksi etil asetat hanya membuat larva nyamuk mati sementara fraksi n-heksana dapat mendegradasi sel larva hingga hancur. Kemampuan biolarvasida aktif ekstrak beluntas ini dikuatkan dengan hasil analisa GC-MS yang menunjukkan bahwa kandungan senyawa aktif ekstrak daun beluntas seperti quinic acid, hydrazinecarboxamide, benzene acetic acid, dan 1,2-benzendicarboxylic acid yang merupakan senyawa larvasida.

The objective of this study was to compare the larvicidal effect of hydroethanolic extracts of fresh and dry leaves of Melia azedarach Linnaeus (Sapindales: Meliaceae) on Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762) (Diptera: Culicidae). All the extracts evaluated induced mortality among the third and fourth instar larvae of Aedes aegypti after 24 and 48 hours of exposure to the products. Although previous studies had demonstrated the action of seeds and fruits of Melia azedarach against the larvae of different Aedes aegypti populations, the present report is the first to show the larvicidal effect of the fresh and dry leaves of this plant.

Crude acetone and ethanol extracts of the aerial parts of 21 Cephalaria species collected from Turkey were investigated for larvicidal and adult topical activity against Aedes aegypti. The ethanol extracts from C. elazigensis var. purpurea, C. anatolica, and C. elmaliensis possessed the highest mortality against first instar Ae. aegypti larvae. Luteolin-7 -O-β-D-glycoside (1), isolated from C. elmaliensis ethanol extract, demonstrated 33% and 53% mortality at 0.1 μg/mL concentration against first instar ORL (susceptible) and PR (pyrethroid resistant) strains, respectively. C. scoparia acetone extract showed 100% mortality against adult Ae. aegypti. From this extract compounds 2-8 were isolated. Compound 2 (isoorientin) possessed the highest toxicity with 31.7% and 65% mortality at a 10 μg/mL concentration against adult ORL and PR strains, respectively. This is the first screening report of potential insecticides from Cephalaria species against the yellow fever mosquito, Ae. aegypti, and the active compounds (1 and 2) could lead to the development of a new class of insecticide.
