In the solvothermal condition, a Pd(II) complex with a in situ synthesis ligand, [Pd(2,2’-bipy)2(CN)2] (1) was obtained and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV, TG, and powder X-ray analysis. The single crystal X-ray analysis showed that the title complex is different from the reported 2,2’-bipyridyldicyano-palladium(II) (2) in crystal system and structural parameters. The catalytic investigation for the reactions of the disproportionation of hydrogen peroxide and oxidation of sulfide showed that the complex 1 is an active homogeneous catalyst in the presence of imidazole and 2-sulfobenzoic acid, respectively.

We report a simple and environmentally friendly approach to the synthesis of Au-SiO2 composite nanospheres. Our method presents a route for the decoration of preformed amine functionalized SiO2 nanospheres by in situ formation of Au nanoparticles at three different concentrations of Au precursor (HAuCl4). Herein, the silane coupling agent (KH-550) is used as an intermediary to connect the Au nanoparticles to the surfaces of the SiO2 nanospheres, which helps avoid the aggregation of Au nanoparticles. The crystal structure, chemical elements, morphology and catalytic properties of the Au-SiO2 composite nanospheres were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-Ray powder diffraction (XRD), UV-vis-spectrophotometer (UV-vis) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The analytical results demonstrate that the Au nanoparticles (4–9 nm) were homogeneously distributed on the surface of the SiO2 nanospheres, which had a good FCC crystal structure. Moreover, the Au-SiO2 composite nanospheres exhibited good catalytic properties, measured by their ability to reduce organic dyes. The Au-SiO2 composite nanospheres are promising candidates for applications in catalysis and wastewater treatment.

An crystal-growth technique for single crystal x-ray structure analysis of high-pressure forms of hydrogen-bonded crystals is proposed. We used alcohol mixture (methanol: ethanol = 4:1 in volumetric ratio), which is a widely used pressure transmitting medium, inhibiting the nucleation and growth of unwanted crystals. In this paper, two kinds of single crystals which have not been obtained using a conventional experimental technique were obtained using this technique: ice VI at 1.99 GPa and MgCl2·7H2O at 2.50 GPa at room temperature. Here we first report the crystal structure of MgCl2·7H2O. This technique simultaneously meets the requirement of hydrostaticity for high-pressure experiments and has feasibility for further in-situ measurements.

In situ high pressure energy dispersive X-ray diffraction measurements on layered perovskite-like manganate Ca 3 Mn 2 O 7 under pressures up to 35 GPa have been performed by using diamond anvil cell with synchrotron radiation. The results show that the structure of layered perovskite-like manganate Ca 3 Mn 2 O 7 is unstable under pressure due to the easy compression of NaCl-type blocks. The structure of Ca 3 Mn 2 O 7 underwent two phase transitions under pressures in the range of 0~35 GPa. One was at about 1.3 GPa with the crystal structure changing from tetragonal to orthorhombic. The other was at about 9.5 GPa with the crystal structure changing from orthorhombic back to another tetragonal.

The coordination chemistry of N-(2,6-di-methylphenyl)-2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldimine (1) with Cu(II) has been investigated by X-ray crystallography, electronic and EPR spectroscopies, as well as by electro- and magnetochemistry. The title complex 2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P212121 (a = 8.1538, b = 17.7466, c =19.8507 Å). The mononuclear square-planar molecules 2 featuring trans-N2O2 coordination are connected via weak intermolecular C-H· · ·π interactions into infinite chains parallel to the a axis. Although the intermolecular Cu· · ·Cu separations within individual chains and between chains are very long (8.154 and 9.726 Å ), the exchange interaction parameter G = 2.03 < 4, estimated from solid state EPR spectra, suggests the existence of long-distance superexchange pathways between adjacent Cu(II) centers. The electronic and electrochemical features of the compound are also discussed.

The title complex is asymmetric in the crystal due to the spatial orientation of the NCS function. The space group has been determined to be P21 with a = 9.496(3), b = 8.736(3), c = 9.676(3) Å, β = 117.859(5)°, and Z = 2. The solid state 13C NMR spectrum is consistent with the lack of symmetry in the crystal and there is little evidence for large amplitude motion in the macrocycle as determined from the dipolar dephased spectrum.Key words: macrocyclic crown ether, lithium complex.

This study presented a simple and environmentally friendly method of in situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on cotton fabrics for durable ultraviolet (UV) protection and antibacterial activity using Aloe vera leaf extraction (AVE) as a reducing and stabilizing agent. Cotton fabrics were pretreated in water, and then immersed in AgNO3 and AVE, respectively. Cotton fabrics were characterized by small angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis, UV protection, antibacterial activity, and laundering durability. Comparing with the smooth surface of the control cotton fabric, SEM and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) results showed that there were a considerable number of Ag2O and AgNPs loading on the surface of the pretreated and Ag loaded cotton fabrics. The XRD pattern indicated, respectively, the existence of Ag2O and AgNPs, the structures of which were similar to JCPDS File No.65-3289 and JCPDS File No. 01-071-4613 on the pretreated and Ag loaded cotton fabrics. The pretreated and Ag loaded cotton fabrics showed excellent UV protection, antibacterial activity, and laundering durability, especially the Ag loaded cotton fabric, of which the UV protection factor value and transmission of UVA were 148 and 1.11%, respectively, after 20 washing cycles, and the clear zone width was more than 4 mm against E. coli or S. aureus. AgNPs facilitated the improvement of the thermal property of the cotton fabrics. Thus this facile in situ reduction of AgNPs with AVE may bring a promising and green strategy to produce functional textiles.
